>evidence of an explosive device was found in the vehicle, police said
So it probably wasn't an accident then and someone did this with malice

Given that he rather gently drove through the front glass door, turned right, went down the hallway, and got into the area of the restaurant before blowing up, yeah, I'd say this was done on purpose.

So a possible failed car bombing? That doesn’t make sense why anyone would do so to that location, let alone when it’s closed when no one’s there.

At least that guy that burnt down the toilet paper factory had the decency to do it at night so casualties would be minimal (not that it was okay).

In my defence I also wrote this comment at 3am so I didn’t consider that. I didn’t read the article either.

Is it not ok to burn down a warehouse in protest of the life-grinding, soul-killing machinery of capitalism?

attacking a rich people country club sounds like it would of warranted the death penalty either way.
Thank you! It's a long article but there's a paywall, so here are the most relevant bits:
> The ground floor of the building was “completely destroyed” and suffered “millions of dollars in damages,” said one of the law enforcement sources, who requested anonymity because the investigation is still ongoing.
>[...]
>The club’s first floor was home to a casual restaurant, formal event spaces, a members’ lounge overlooking Providence Park, a retail store and the front desk. The damage was to the building’s first floor; the building has multiple stories, with workout facilities, a rock-climbing wall, pools, locker rooms, an indoor track, racquet sport courts and other amenities throughout.
>[...]
>Police said the driver entered the building’s lobby, turned right, and drove through a set of turnstiles, past a wall display with trophies and other memorabilia, and towards 26 Founders, a table service restaurant at the private club, before setting off the explosives.
> [...]
> At a press conference Saturday afternoon, Police Chief Bob Day said medical examiners were unable to identify the driver as crews continued working to diffuse the explosives.
>
> Day said police are confident that the incident was confined to the MAC, and that there are no other threats to the community.
>
> Along with the Federal Bureau of Investigations and the Bureau of Alcohol, Firearms and Tobacco, a team of experts trained to dispose of explosives was still working within the building as of Saturday afternoon, law enforcement officials said. The car involved in the incident remained inside the building.
>
> DeFrain, from the Metro Explosive Disposal Unit, which includes bomb technicians from multiple police agencies, said officers found a number of incendiary devices and improvised explosive devices, including some that had already been detonated and some that had started to do so and then fizzled out.
>
> “This is a dirty, dangerous, complex job,” DeFrain said. “I’ve been a bomb technician here in this city for over 13 years. This is by far the most complex scene I have ever done.”
Also, apparently:
> Family dues are $422.34 per month, and $280.11 for an individual.
So it's a pretty elite kind of club. And:
>The club had been tightening its security in recent years, at great expense, after a former employee was arrested for verbally confronting members at their homes and in public, according to messages sent to club members that were shared with The Oregonian/OregonLive.
No idea whether or not it's the same former employee.

A former employee went to members' houses to confront them? That's totally messed up.

I mean...I care that it probably had some neat artwork in there that's destroyed now, and if anybody but the attacker had been hurt, I'd care about that. But I don't care about them having to shell out for repairs, no.

The MAC is more like a country club than a gym. You have to pay a steep initiation fee and be recommended by a member to join. It used to exclude Jews and minorities so now they have an affirmative action plan. I know because someone tried to recruit me when I lived there but it was just to make it look less white. No way I was going to waste any money on joining that place. There is a huge waiting list to join, go figure.

Terrible title. Mentally ill man with TBI from self inflicted gunshot and a history of paranoia related to the Multnomah Athletic Club crashed a car filled with homemade explosives into the building causing significant damage. The driver was the only person who suffered physical harm. The suspected man also had a history of releasing pink chickens in public places.

Interesting - I saw a photo of the pink chicken in another article but didn’t know about the other stuff. Pretty sad given it sounds like his brain was broken….

So health clubs are just country clubs that do meal prep. Is this an accurate assumption?
