10 years ago today, Trump promised to eliminate the national debt. Instead, it has doubled.
In 2016, Donald Trump said he could eliminate the national debt in eight years. It has since surged from $19 trillion to over $39 trillion.

But so has his net worth. And his children's and friends'.

Broken-Digital-Clock Mar 31, 2026 +208
Way more than doubled. He likely went from mountains of debt to actually being a billionaire by stealing as much as he could.
208
A_Refill_of_Mr_Pibb Apr 1, 2026 +47
It's tripled just since he was elected again ($2.3B to $6.5B)
47
ekidd07 Apr 1, 2026 +31
And according to Epstein’s financial analysis of him prior to the first election, he was worth less than $250M.
31
keepthepace Apr 1, 2026 +7
Just the crypto scheme, which has been a visible scam, earned him more than a billion. From this point I think he went out of debts.
7
worstpartyever Apr 1, 2026 +6
He’s a bottomless pit of greed. He could be the world’s richest man and still be pissed off. There’s no amount of money, real estate, attention, or power that will make him ‘happy.’ There’s only another acquisition.
6
gorginhanson Mar 31, 2026 +47
Eventually he will wipe out the national debt due to dollars becoming worthless
47
Capt_morgan72 Mar 31, 2026 +24
That’s the plan I think. Make USD worthless. Switch to crypto. If all his debt is in USD and USD is worth $0.00 his debt is $0
24
Moist-Schedule Apr 1, 2026 +9
how the f*** can he still be in debt with all the cons he's pulled in broad daylight the last 10 years as president? and that's just the shit we're aware of.
9
PossiblyATurd Apr 1, 2026 +7
Gotta pay the debt to make it go away. Paying for things isn't what Trump does. He takes "if it's a hole, it's a goal" very, very seriously.
7
Best_Economy485 Apr 1, 2026 +2
Remember Trump said he’s the king of debt.
2
Chemical-Fault-7331 Mar 31, 2026
But, so is everyone else’s debt.
0
Capt_morgan72 Mar 31, 2026 +5
Yep, and you will notice. Lots of ppl with lots of debt are very happy about what he’s doing and how he’s doing it.
5
DarkerSavant Apr 1, 2026 +2
If you consider inflation the debt gets smaller right? /s
2
Lovely-Honey_64 Apr 1, 2026 +2
Making billionaires richer and the nation poorer, Trump is really the worst thing to have happened to America
2
Vast-Butte-Futures Mar 31, 2026 +103
And note how much of that increase is due to his policies. Typical Republican economic management.
103
pogishushu Mar 31, 2026 +15
Typical repugnant economic mismanagement.
15
1cl3nstd4yt Mar 31, 2026 -46
Maybe this will teach the DNC a lesson for failing to excite us with appropriate levels of boldness.
-46
ShamelessLeft Mar 31, 2026 +28
Shame you all needed to get 'excited' before you would vote to keep Nazis and Confederates out of the WH, to keep them from kicking over 20 million people off of their Healthcare to pay for another tax cut for the rich and to make a billionaire pedophile felon be held accountable for his crimes. Anyone that didn't vote because they couldn't get 'excited' are just as complicit in the shit we are dealing with now as Maga is as far as I'm concerned.
28
1cl3nstd4yt Apr 1, 2026 +1
Why shouldn't we expect boldness and verve?
1
IrritableGourmet Apr 1, 2026 +3
Victim blaming is a bad look any day of the week, but illogical victim blaming is worse.
3
1cl3nstd4yt Apr 1, 2026 +1
What's the point of voting if they can't be bold and zesty?
1
john_jigsaw Mar 31, 2026 +11
The next time your family get raped we'll blame you for failing to protect them with an appropriate level of security.
11
1cl3nstd4yt Apr 1, 2026 +1
Why should I vote for lack of boldness?
1
john_jigsaw Apr 1, 2026 +1
Why should I sympathize with your lack of security?
1
1cl3nstd4yt Apr 1, 2026 +1
Bold is what people want. We must demand a lack of milquetoast.
1
john_jigsaw Apr 1, 2026 +1
I don't know why you're telling me all this. We are in complete agreement. Bold is what people want yeah. Security is also what people want. When the Republicans doubled national debt, that's the Democrat's fault for not being bold enough. It's not the Republican's fault, how could it be? They are precious little snowflakes who can't be held responsible for anything much less doubling the national debt. When your family get raped, that's your fault for not protecting them enough. It's not the rapists' fault, how could it be? They are previous little snowflakes who can't be held responsible for anything much less raping your family. See? We are in full agreement.

returnofthecursed Mar 31, 2026 +75
Republican policies are disastrous for the health of our overall economy and for regular people. The myth of Republican "fiscal conservatism" is a joke, they spend and spend and spend, as long as they're spending on things that actively harm regular people in the US. For instance, just this month they started spending a billion dollars a day to bomb children and civilian infrastructure in Iran.
75
jrob321 Mar 31, 2026 +29
The Republican party has been telling the American public they have a better plan to put into place as an alternative to Obamacare for... Wait for it... 18 f****** years now. 18 years. And Trump ran on the promise before he was elected to his first term 10 years ago, and anytime you ask for the details from the Republicans; a bill, a policy, even just an idea, you get... NOTHING. But half the country keeps supporting them because they're convinced Democrats sole purpose is to advance dirty socialism. Republicans look you straight in the eye and tell you it's raining while they piss down your back...
29
VanceKelley Mar 31, 2026 +17
A third of Americans support White Fascism because they are racist.
17
HumanWithComputer Mar 31, 2026 +4
>Republicans look you straight in the eye and tell you it's raining while they piss down your back... OK. Now I'm trying to imagine what position you have to be in relative to each other to do both these things simultaneously. Kind of: How many contortionists does it take to..."

3
Ancient_Popcorn Mar 31, 2026 +31
As with everything else Republicans say, the opposite holds true. Republicans constantly explode the deficit and debt. Trump just took that practice to the next level by diverting the funds to himself.
31
PopPalsUnited Mar 31, 2026 +26
Trump lied!?!?!? Who could have seen this coming?
26
BlotchComics Mar 31, 2026 +23
lol... the comments section of every reason.com article is always a dumpster fire. Just MAGAts blaming Biden and "illegals".
23
SoTiredYouDig Mar 31, 2026 +6
Holy c***. You weren’t kidding. Ooof.
6
DrowningKrown Apr 1, 2026 +3
Visit any mainstream news tik tok profile (CBS/NBC/CNN) and look at their comment section. It's just a bunch of bots blaming Biden or Obama and praising trump on EVERY SINGLE video. I'm not convinced these are not bots. They never reply. They have no real profile pic. Private profile. They're flooding comment sections of all news outlets with this shit. It's almost always the same types of comments too. 1 sentence, short, some variation of "we love you trump!" Or blaming Biden or Obama.
3
alabasterskim Mar 31, 2026 +20
And a potent reminder: Trump has been president for 6 of these last 10 years and Republicans have controlled at least one chamber of Congress for 8 of the last 10 years. That 2 year Dem trifecta didn't do this. **Trump did**, as every Republican always does. Yes, it increased under Biden (and before him, Obama), but the deficit had decreased and the bleeding was slowing. Trump was handed a gem of an economy (twice) and if he had done *nothing* he'd be seen as an excellent president. But he can't help it; he has to put his hands on things. And when he does, every time, what he touches turns to shit.
20
travio Mar 31, 2026 +11
For republicans, deficits only matter when dems are in charge. That goes beyond deficits, even. Hell, the rule of law only applies to dems for republicans.

Have to say it’s been fun watching Reason’s epic crashout of late. Y’all voted for this shit. Reap what you sow…

Well yeah, he lies about everything. Dude is incompetent. Before he started enriching himself illegally through the Oval Office, his finances were a disaster.
10
WritesAndPrivileges Mar 31, 2026 +4
Trump literally just said whatever he knew people thought they wanted to hear. And they elected him twice because he makes it okay to be racist.
4
VeryRareHuman Mar 31, 2026 +6
Maga gloats over this fact. They def showed the libs.
6
Frustratedtx Mar 31, 2026 +3
The only way Trump has ever eliminated debts is by bankrupting a company and sending it into chapter 11. He's treating the US like one of his Casinos.
3
Be-skeptical Mar 31, 2026 +4
These headlines are written like it’s a surprise that he lies.

BornInATrailer Mar 31, 2026 +1
Unfortunately, assuming the count is in dollars, we're already well, well past 4 bytes... and the next stop is 8. We don't really have to worry about rolling over an 8 byte value. (EDIT: The country will be long, long gone before then would be my point. I don't think this pace isn't sustainable for the next *dozens* of years.)
1

And people seriously thought a narcissistic man-child who is totally inept would follow through and make this happen?

3
Menanders-Bust Mar 31, 2026 +3
You can find clips of him promising a new health care plan to replace the ACA ever since 2016, multiple times per year. Most promise a bill being signed in the next 2-4 weeks. He’s full of shit. He just says whatever comes to mind without any real knowledge or intention of following through. That’s one reason I don’t even watch his speeches. It’s pointless talk. You could literally have a chatbot tell you predictions at random and those would be more likely to occur than anything Trump says.
3
Darth-mickyluv Apr 1, 2026 +3
It's almost as if he's an incompetent liar.

“Trump promise” is a contradiction in terms—like a pyromaniac pledging to fight forest fires, or a Republican feigning concern for protecting women’s health.
2
Remarkable_Screen_88 Mar 31, 2026 +2
"it has doubled" alone? on its own? it's no one's fault, right? certainly not that guy that promised to lower it
2
trisul-108 Mar 31, 2026 +2
If you believed him then, you will continue to believe him now. If 50,000 proven lies meant nothing to you and you still voted for him, why should anything change. Why are we even discussing "Trump lied". Of course he did. The news would be find a single sentence uttered by Trump that does **not** contain a lie, half-truth or manipulation. A single sentence. Does it even exist?

So Americans hired a six time bankruptcy guy, who managed to bankrupt a typically higher profit margin business, like casinos, because they thought he would help the economy? And Americans thought the guy who didn't pay his own bills was going to care about the national debt? This country has some serious mental issues.
2

Man with six bankruptcies makes promises about responsible debt management. Instead of laughing him out of the room, Americans voted for him. He then took a strong economy and turned it into a recession. Then they voted for him again. And again.

Republicans always say they will reduce/eliminate the national debt, blame it on the Dems and then balloon it. Somehow the Dems can never counter the narrative. As far as I can tell, a Republican president has NEVER reduced the national debt. https://www.us-debt-clock.com/presidents Edit: The above chart shows reductions in the deficit not debt. Republicans have never even lowered the deficit. No modern president has reduced the debt, apparently.

This is the moment first time ever in my life I have accepted that humanity is meant to be doomed. Also first time ever I am considering not bringing a kid to this world. I couldn’t bear him/her to die in poverty and hunger despite their best efforts just because system was stacked against them. It is clear that enough fools can ensure their own demise along with those of others.

1
Due-Dot6450 Apr 1, 2026 +1
All his "promises" were just words to get elected. And he needed to be elected to avoid prison. Nothing more.
1
WontArnett Apr 1, 2026 +1
You could write this with how many promises he’s made in the last ten years?
1
JLord Apr 1, 2026 +1
If you believed him when he said this, then you were a gullible simpleton. If you believed he even honestly intended to try to accomplish this goal, then you were a gullible simpleton. If you thought it was fine for a presidential candidate to spout such nonsensical bullshit, then you were a stupid idiot. If you still voted for him anyways, then you were a stupid idiot. If you doubled down on Trump loyalty because everyone around you called you a gullible simpleton and this hurt your feelings, then you were a stupid idiot. I'm sorry to say it in such harsh terms, but I guess hindsight is 20/20.

Well guess what? They were real bucko xD

NiceGalsFinishFirst Mar 31, 2026 -8
He was going to use tariffs, and DOGE all US spending but judges all over the place caved to partisan political pressure to put an end to that plan and four of the last ten years he wasn’t President. We also endured a once in a century pandemic that required massive spending to keep people alive, fed, and housed.
-8
jmikehub Apr 1, 2026 +1
You mean the same DOGE that didn’t stop any wasteful spending and was just a scheme by Musk to get data? And “endured” a pandemic is wild because I thought you guys said the pandemic was fake and nobody died from it? Covid was just a cold remember? He’s also president right now and spending $1B a day on a war nobody wanted or needed. Clearly he’s so good with money, He has all branches of government and COULD do actual meaningful things to reduce the deficit but he won't because he doesn’t care.
