*”As we are in the midst of voting season, we want to remind our community to always prioritize safety while out on the water,” Benitez said. “Make sure you do a safety check and ensure that your boat is in good working condition.”* Surely “boating season” was said and not “voting season”?

I checked the article and it says “voting” so either that’s the accurate quote or no one proof-read the article before publication :/

The publishing process has been in decline for a long time. From 2008, "Death of the Copy Editor": https://www.nationalreview.com/media-blog/death-copy-editor-kevin-d-williamson/

There is no punishment for typos. Online journalism is a competition for attention, and editing & proofreading wastes time.
17
roscannon May 10, 2026 +8
Yup! If spell check is good then publish.
8
SkunkMonkey May 10, 2026 +6
Proofreading is a dead profession. If it passes a spell and grammar check in Word, it's good enough to publish.
6
CptMurphy May 10, 2026 +5
AI gets audio transcription wrong a lot. Because you know, it would take too much human manpower and time to listen and write it down. It's like, a whole sentence.
5
Three_Twenty-Three May 10, 2026 +11
My local news channels gave it up years ago. The number of times they've written that a vehicle's "breaks" failed is frightening. And then to make their coverage worse, they do no follow-up of any kind. If a detail didn't make it into the first report, it doesn't exist.

Voice recognition is simply terrible. For instance my phone understands 'Call Juan'. However if I use Juan in a sentence, it always understands it as 'one'. And don't get me even started on possessives.

Yep or filled the rod holders with gas, RUN YOUR BLOWERS PEOPLE, and take a damn boater safety course. The amount of people that think they can just jump on a boat without any knowledge is astounding.
250
TsarOfReddit May 10, 2026 +67
What is a blower?
67
jalapenochips May 10, 2026 +119
Since boats have to be sealed up from water, there is a fan in the engine bay that blows out gas fumes, usually I run it when starting up then probably about 10 minutes into my boat run. If the fumes collect, it can cause an explosion.
119
OldeArrogantBastard May 10, 2026 +51
To note, this is mainly an issue with boats with inboard motors.
51
littlerelaxation May 11, 2026 +2
and I/O?
2
TsarOfReddit May 10, 2026 +31
Thanks for the info. Never considered the sealing aspect of a boat to cause an issue like that. Also I’m shocked you didn’t make use of that perfect set up
31
jalapenochips May 10, 2026 +8
Yeah no problem!
8
jonnyrottwn May 10, 2026 +3
Insinuating a perfect crime? Thats pretty cold man
3
manchegoo May 11, 2026 +2
It's not the sealing. The engine compartment is not air tight, and is sealed with just a normal trap door usually on top. It's just a confined space is all. The engine is inside the hull on an inboard.
2
gospdrcr000 May 10, 2026 +6
Im assuming this is an inboard only problem?
6
Interesting-Ice7313 May 10, 2026 +12
Correct, I’ve seen videos of jetskis exploding too. Which of course is also an inboard.
12
fluffyendermen May 10, 2026 +6
why not just run it the whole time?
6
Benmarch15 May 10, 2026 +7
Relatively loud and unpleasant on some boats
7
airfryerfuntime May 11, 2026 +3
You *can*, they're just kind of annoying and it wears them out faster. I run the blower for a couple minutes before starting the engine, and if I'm trolling.
3
SethAndBeans May 10, 2026 +15
*Sigh...* Your mom's a blower. ^^someone ^^had ^^to
15
vahntitrio May 10, 2026 +6
Inboard motors are in a compartment inside a boat, along with fuel and fuel lines. The blower blows fresh air into the compartment. If you don't, the fumes may get concentrated enough to ignite the whole mixture when you go to start the engine. Boats with outboard motors don't require these since the engine is alrwady in open air.

Good to know. My experience on waterways is with kayaks and John boats - so it’s about as rudimentary as you can get, I guess. I wonder if planes deal with something similar

I was imagining two cops, one kind of crazy and young and the other old and ready to retire, finding out that there's a katana wielding coke dealer on a boat and the only way to stop him was to douse the cocaine with gasoline and then light it while jumping off the boat in slow motion but I don't know how boats work

FYI this happened yesterday but I hadn’t seen it reported and thought it was notable so I posted it. This article has updates from today. Article text: > A total of 11 people were hospitalized Saturday following a possible boat explosion near North Miami Beach. > Miami-Dade Fire Rescue spokesperson Erika Benitez said crews responded just after 12:30 p.m. to reports of a possible vessel explosion near the popular boating area near the Haulover Beach marina. > More than 25 units responded, including boat fire crews, ocean rescue teams and partner agencies such as the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission and the U.S. Coast Guard, Benitez said. > “Upon arrival, our crews encountered multiple patients with various degrees of injury, including burns requiring medical attention,” Benitez said. > Officials upgraded the response to a Level 2 mass casualty incident due to the number of patients and the need for additional resources, she said. > The Haulover Sandbar, near Haulover Beach marina, is a shallow boating area known for lively parties in North Miami Beach. > Officials said the cause of the apparent explosion remains under investigation. > “As we are in the midst of voting season, we want to remind our community to always prioritize safety while out on the water,” Benitez said. “Make sure you do a safety check and ensure that your boat is in good working condition.”

Big_Knife_SK May 10, 2026 +22
The phrase "possible boat explosion" seems overly cautious.
22
Lirael_Gold May 10, 2026 +10
It's party season, a *small* explosion on a packed boat could injure a bunch of people Doesn't mean the boat itself has detonated, but we won't know until the investigation is complete, so the language used is cautiious. There's a lot of shit on a boat that could "explode" and people could have brought other things aboard (gas fired BBQs etc)
10
Ginger_Anarchy May 10, 2026 +2
Especially during a holiday weekend. A lot of boats congregate together at sandbars or mooring spots and an explosion on one can still injure people on others.
2
Terrik1337 May 10, 2026 +23
Why are we hospitalizing people over a possible boat explosion? Shouldn't we wait till it explodes first?

Possible boat explosion? What does that mean. A boat either exploded or it didn’t. And clearly people got hurt so something happened.

da_chicken May 10, 2026 +43
No, you've got it wrong. It's a Possible Boat. Maybe it was a boat. Maybe it was a boat. Maybe a ship. Or a schooner. It's like the opposite of the Heart of Gold from Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy.

Rosencrantz: We might as well be dead. Do you think death could possibly be a boat? Guildenstern: No, no, no... Death is...not. Death isn't. You take my meaning. Death is the ultimate negative. Not-being. You can't not-be on a boat. Rosencrantz: I've frequently not been on boats. Guildenstern: No, no, no--what you've been is not on boats.

Drone314 May 10, 2026 +43
Happens all the time, you're supposed to vent the engine compartment on power boats to ensure no combustible fumes are present before starting the engine. Hard to say if this were the case but gasoline vapors in confined spaces generally are what does boom on a pleasure boat.

it would be better to use something like "apparent boat explosion" because with this fucked up world, it could be a drone for all we know

That's what I was wondering. Did the f****** boat explode? Was the boat still there in one piece? It was around noon when it happened, reportedly.
3
FnordRanger_5 May 10, 2026 +2
Right? There no middle ground here where ‘normal boat condition’ overlaps with ‘exploded boat condition.’ Like… “the boat may have exploded or maybe it’s just a real messy boat we’re waiting to hear back from our man on the ground”

"possible boat explosion..."? know much of life is down to a POV/context, but would seem if there, regardless of "pov" you'd know with the simplest rudimentary inductive/deductive reasoning, not necessarily the reason for exploding.. but that an "explosion" did happen within the sphere of a boat: yes sir, that-there boat, done just exploded ¯\\\_(ツ)\_/¯
