This is what some called sweating sickness in the 1500s...

GrandmaPoses May 8, 2026 +271
It causes heavy perspiration and body odor or, as it’s known in the medical field, “being from New Jersey.”

The most up to date prescription from the CDC is to workout shirtless, shoeless and in your blue jeans.

Hantavirus….whatever happened there

A guy and a girl were on a hot & heavy date in Philadelphia. The girl asked him if he would “kiss her where it smells.” So he took her to New Jersey.

Hantavirus pulmonary syndrome was not in England in the 1500s
18
bdfmradio May 9, 2026 -4
Wait, why not? It seems like this is an OK theory. There surely were rats in England in the 1500s. [edit: it’s also posited it was from ticks, or some other kind of flu]
-4
madmax766 May 9, 2026 +14
It’s a disease of the new world, old world hantaviruses cause hantavirus hemorrhagic fever and renal syndrome, which is quite different and less deadly, symptoms are quite different as well! HPS probably wouldn’t have been named sweating sickness, fever/sweating isn’t the most notable symptom people exhibit
14
bdfmradio May 11, 2026 +1
I see! Thank you for the info!

imgonnajumpofabridge May 10, 2026 +3
Rats carry lots of different diseases. Most likely two entirely different ones

Even though I think this outbreak isn't being taken seriously enough, this is fear mongering. It's not news unless they test positive.
689
TuckerCarlsonsOhface May 8, 2026 +223
Yeah, I think I saw at least a dozen articles about that KLM stewardess being hospitalized for it over the last few days, and this morning she tested negative. “News” media needs to be put in their place.
223
Automatic-Corner-157 May 10, 2026 +8
We don’t have news anymore. It’s all click bait $$$ making.
8
Chirotera May 8, 2026 +78
The article I saw of that said that she was showing symptoms and was thus being isolated out of an abundance of caution. It was the comments on the article that were freaking out. I think the media has been fine, mostly. It's people not thinking and freaking the f*** out that haven't.
78
DisillusionedPatriot May 9, 2026 +7
Billionaires paid for news media to be exactly where it is.
7
E1M1_DOOM May 10, 2026 +2
Yeah, I'm actually okay with them creating concern for a possible outbreak of f****** hantavirus. Much better than the alternative.
2
TuckerCarlsonsOhface May 10, 2026 +3
Of reporting it without making it seem like the next Pandemic? Yeah, I’m not with you on that.
3
E1M1_DOOM May 10, 2026 +3
It very well could be. We have idiots in charge.
3
TuckerCarlsonsOhface May 10, 2026 +2
I see their fear mongering was effective
2
Curious-Path4549 May 11, 2026 +1
i think the biggest worry is the idiots running things part
1
wewereromans May 8, 2026 +46
It's a net positive if it get's people exposed to take quarantine seriously, even if only through shame or fear. Whether their potential is really to kill a billion, or just a dozen of their friends and loved ones, life is saved by common sense quarantine. Unfortunately people are fresh out of common sense these days, so yeah, shame and fear, whatever works.
46
k_realtor May 9, 2026 +8
[Hanta virus and symptoms ](https://www.cdc.gov/hantavirus/about/andesvirus.html)appear **4 to 42 days after exposure** vs the typical 5 days that Covid so at least we know after 42 days means We're all good and nothing to worry about. I'm glad it's not 28 day later.
8
HakaishinChampa May 8, 2026 +22
People won't treat it seriously, we already saw how people treated covid.
22
Slypenslyde May 8, 2026 +6
The only people we shame during a pandemic are the people who stay home or wear masks.
6
Secret_Cow_5053 May 8, 2026 +73
Not really. Exposure is exposure, and the incubation period can last up to 8 weeks. Not a good idea to let probable exposures walk around unmonitored while carrying a version of this thing that can be spread human to human.
73
Alternative_Fly6185 May 8, 2026 -36
Yes the cdc is taking care of it, we don't need an entire article on the fact fact that two happen to be from New Jersey.
-36
Skid-Vicious May 9, 2026 +18
So I guess we just rub beef tallow on our chest and a few shots of methylene blue
18
LowerRhubarb May 8, 2026 +73
You mean the CDC led by a roadkill munching moron with a brain worm? That's been gutted of anyone who ever said anything bad about Trump's COVID response?
73
Secret_Cow_5053 May 8, 2026 +45
I’m not sure how I feel about the current cdc 😒
45
bbusiello May 9, 2026 +6
This is not going to be like covid. That said, I do feel bad for anyone with close or direct contact with the ship/planes in this incident.
6
Glewit1 May 8, 2026 +7
Yeah! Let’s shut our ears off to this because no one’s positive. YEAH! Let’s just wait and resume activities as normal around people potentially exposed to the virus, and then right after let’s go about our business with other people too. You know why, because they didn’t test positive. So yeah, until I’m testing positive after I’m exposed, I’m just gonna kiss everyone I see. How dumb can one be? Waiting to take preventative measures until after people have interacted with someone exposed to the virus is how you spread the virus. So, 10 people test positive for the virus on a cruise. 390 have not been tested. You think it’s okay for them to go on interacting with others even though they have been potentially exposed? Yikes. Hope you’re a bot honestly.
7
imgonnajumpofabridge May 10, 2026 +5
They said it's not news lol. Nothing was said about quarantine procedures.
5
qtx May 9, 2026 +2
> Even though I think this outbreak isn't being taken seriously enough It's taken way too serious. In Europe alone there were 1885 cases in 2023. https://www.who.int/emergencies/disease-outbreak-news/item/2026-DON600
2
madmax766 May 9, 2026 +12
That’s cases of Hantavirus Hemorrhagic Fever with Renal Syndrome, a completely different and much less severe disease than Hantavirus Pulmonary Syndrome. HPS is a new world disease.
12
TheGeneGeena May 10, 2026 +2
Yeah, but between 1993 and 2023 there were 859 confirmed cases of HPS in the US. It's been around with folks catching it. The only thing particularly interesting is that Andes has some person to person. https://www.cdc.gov/hantavirus/data-research/cases/index.html
2
liv_laugh_lawyered May 9, 2026 +1
My thing is were they even tested? Monitoring isn’t testing them for an actual answer
1
ntsp00 May 10, 2026 +2
Well considering you have to be showing symptoms for the test to be accurate and these people aren't showing any symptoms, no.
2
liv_laugh_lawyered May 10, 2026
I now realize this lol sorry, drunk comment on my part

OttersWithPens May 10, 2026 +1
Not to mention it’s not a novel illness in the states. They are now looking for it to fear monger
1
nocoolN4M3sleft May 10, 2026 +1
I think the bigger issue is that the incubation period has a wide range. The article states that it lasts between 4 and 42(!!) days
1
TheLastBaboon May 10, 2026
Tbh I think it’s being taken too seriously. This isn’t Covid-19. From what we know from viruses similar to what we’ve known of since the 90’s, Hantavirus rarely transfers between humans unless there is contact that is direct or prolonged. A virus spreading on a cruise is nothing new. Just went from a couple weeks of huge global news, to some weeks things slowed down but the stories are tired
0
houseofechoes May 10, 2026
Even if they test negative now, they could potentially infect others, because of the long incubation time. Some people like the Dutch stewardess are going to test negative, but they could be positive in the next days/weeks. I'm not trying to fear-monger, just sharing my worries :)
0
ntsp00 May 10, 2026 +1
Wrong. If they're showing symptoms, they're no longer in the incubation phase and the test is reliable. That's the entire reason no one being monitored is tested unless they're actually showing symptoms. And it's not contagious if you're asymptomatic.
1
houseofechoes May 11, 2026 +2
**American who tested positive will be transported to biocontainment unit** The individual does not have any symptoms and was separated from other passengers during the flight through biocontainment measures. They will be receiving a follow-up test, Nebraska Medicine said.
2
trollsong May 9, 2026 -6
Media has to over emphasize now so when the outbreak actually hits people can point to earlier exaggerations as proof its still being exaggerated.
-6
_goblinette_ May 9, 2026 +13
The absolute most important thing to for stopping a viral outbreak is to identify and isolate the infected people as early as possible. This is much easier when the news is being spread far and wide so that those people say “hey I think I may have been exposed to a virus. I should really get checked out” The consequences of over reporting are that you were annoyed for 30 seconds because you heard a news story that doesn’t apply to you. The consequences of under reporting are a larger outbreak. Maybe even a pandemic.

Don’t worry, I’m sure RFK Jr has a plan, something in depth and sensible. Like cutting the p**** off a raccoon, drying it and turning it into powder to sniff.

How many raccoon dicks do we need to hawk down to stay safe?

Hantavirus is the same disease that killed actor Gene Hackman's wife. She was sick for days not knowing what was wrong with her. It's very rare, and many have never heard of it.

Despite knowing full well the potential dangers of Hantavirus, this story gives me strong "Not this shit again!' vibes. 2 weeks to flatten the curve turning to nearly 2 years of lockdowns made me lose my house and business and everything I worked like a mule for 4 decades to build up. Now, however irrational it might sound, my attitude is that I'd sooner clean the mouse droppings out of a stored pot with my tongue, than obey one single order, directive, or restriction imposed in the name of "stopping the spread."

That Hanta was Hebrew slang for bogus or fake.
