I think for some people, a big, shared crisis gives them a sense of purpose. It did for me in the pandemic. I was informed as early as December 2019, and I had gloves and masks available well before the panic and was able to share with friends and neighbors. I got really close to the people in my building, and even got active in a local mutual aid org, which ended up helping a lot of folks during the George Floyd protests. I’ve had an anxiety disorder for most of my life, but in a REAL crisis, that anxiety melts away because there are actionable steps I can take and things I can do that make a difference in the lives around me. I’m not going to say I miss the pandemic, but I do miss the sense of purpose it gave me sometimes.
