Much of Morocco is made up of a vast mountain range, the Atlas. There are peaks over 4,100 metres high, covered in snow all year round.
To the south lies an arid, rocky region known as the Anti-Atlas.
The Sahara is only slightly more inhospitable and deadly than these regions.
According to the article, they got lost near Tan-Tan, which is located on the coast. It’s arid, but it’s clearly not that bad and not the desert.
I'd say there's a fifty-fifty chance they're drunk in a brothel.

Yeah, Cap Draa is big, flat, and right next to the ocean. The only rises in the land I recall are the one giant plateau the royal family would chill up on to watch exercises (that never happened, but that's another story). West of Cap Draa is the ocean, though, and there's a sandy hill down to it. Recon guys got everyone in trouble when we were there by f****** around, and I'm sure it's the same story here, people sneaking off to go for a swim and they disappear in the ocean.

If it’s to be believed, the take-home is that a couple of US soldiers decided to go on a spontaneous, unauthorized hike in the Moroccan dunes at 9pm Saturday night promptly upon the conclusion of their scheduled training.
The contradictory media reporting, based on both official AFRICOM communique and on an “anonymous” unauthorized report, is premature, sloppy, and reflects the ongoing derogation of cohesive military discipline, coordination, and control at the top. The ~~buck~~ fuckup stops there.

No, this has happened before. At NTC, about 2 decades ago, a company commander sent a team of 2 out with not enough info about how to get back to the unit and forgot about them. They died of dehydration before they were found. Can't actually find info on that one I heard about, so maybe it was a rumor.
A Marine died exactly that way there in 1988. Took out for a detail, left by himself instead of in a pair, forgotten about by the detail commander and was dead before anyone knew he was missing. They found his bones months later, only 2 miles from the main camp, 17 miles from where they left him.

Not Moroccans. The Moroccan navy was crippled in the early 1770s by the Dutch and afterwards they pivoted their economy towards trade hence the friendship treaty they sent to the US and literally any country they could contact with boats (funnily enough that pivot towards trade helped them survive to be one of the last African nations to be colonized). The Algerians, Tunisians and Libyans were the shits extorting money every year.

To be fair, the CSAR operation for the downed pilot in Iran was a tactical clinic. Thankfully, there are actually highly competent people at the operational levels of the US military.
Time and time again we’ve seen operational excellence on the tactical level in spite of abysmal strategic planning under this administration, and that’s thanks to 20 years of GWOT operational experience which has created a seasoned NCO core with well developed SOPs and TTPs.

Before anyone freaks out, this is more likely to be a couple of guys in a HMMWV got lost or had a car accident than anything untoward.
47
Cobra102003May 3, 2026
+73
They went missing near a cliff, they likely rolled over and are now dead. Humvees are known to easily do this and it was one of the leading causes of US deaths in Afghanistan. People don’t seem to realize that more troops die or get hurt in exercises than in combat. During some points during the GWOT, it was literally safer to be deployed to Iraq or Afghanistan than to be in garrison in the US because of how common training deaths are.
73
_Damien_XMay 3, 2026

I volunteered to be the gunner in a 7 ton truck during on a convoy training exercise. The driver was trying to keep up and maintain spacing with the other vehicles and we rolled over. I was ejected injured my back which I still deal with today. 0/10 wouldn’t recommend.
49
Cobra102003May 3, 2026
+19
Yep, it became such a big issue that they started putting rollover cages on turrets and harnesses on gunners in humvees and other Vic’s in Afghanistan to prevent their neck from being snapped or them being ejected. That just started a whole new issue though of guys being drowned when you rolled over into a stream or something similar cause they couldn’t get out of the harness.

A guy I grew up going to the local park program in the summer with went to West Point out of high school. In 2016 he passed away when a LMTV flipped during a training exercise and he passed away with 8 others. It was so insanely shocking and destroyed the town because he was one of the nicest person possible and very well known. There were floods so the river they were crossing was too strong and they just got swept away apparently.
6
bboycireMay 3, 2026
+4
How? I mean I obviously don't know anything about these kind of things, but isn't a humvee like 2 lanes wide? How does it just roll over?
4
Cobra102003May 3, 2026
+9
Humvees are about 1 1/4 lanes wide on a narrow road. Most of the rollover issues originate from the up armoring of Humvees and the arming of humvees. Originally, they had a very low center of gravity and great handling for a vehicle of their size. As time went on, the army forgot that they procured the humvee as a back line, quick, utility vehicle. When the GWOT started the humvee was pushed into a combat roll and the US military proceeded to start sticking tons of armor on it and adding things like gun cages on the top to protect gunners. Each iteration moved the center of gravity higher and higher which has made modern humvees super prone to rolling over. The Brit’s did the same thing with the Land Rover and had similar issues. They’re still nowhere near as bad though as like an MRAP or LMTV when it comes to rollovers.
