A shooting erupted during a large fight in a nightlife district near the University of Iowa campus, leaving three students wounded early Sunday, police and university officials said. No arrests had been made as of Sunday morning, according to a campus alert.

Calling the IC PedMall downtown the "nightlife district" is doing some heavy lifting.

If this were most countries, this would have been a big fistfight, at worst a stabbing of one or two people. Guns make every conflict so much more dangerous, for those involved and for bystanders too.

If the yanks wanted change they would have got it. Greatest democracy etc. Tbh I don’t even know why these make the Us news, so normal.

Americans are hustlers. If we made every gun in the United States illegal tomorrow, a multibillion dollar black market industry would spring up essentially overnight. There are a ton of retired machinists whose social security checks just aren't meeting their living expenses who would absolutely manufacture untraceable non-serialized firearms, no questions asked, for cash under the table.

I live in Florida now but am from the Iowa City area. You never think that this is going to happen where you live, I grew up thinking Iowa City was a pretty boring place compared to most cities. I hope that all of the victims involved will be okay. These people are my age and should have their whole lives ahead of them.

Genuinely curious, what gun control would fix issues like this? In Czechia the gun laws are LOOSER then the US but you don't see nearly as much gun violence. NYC for example has the strictest gun laws in the US by a huge margin, but the handgun crime rates there are still sky high? Why is that the case when it is already a felony to simply touch a handgun in ny without a pistol permit which takes well over 2 years to obtain? What laws would fix the gun crimes in nyc if the strictest laws in the country aren't already doing that
-3
DeadGuyInRoom4 2 days ago +19
The gun crimes rates in NYC are not, in fact, sky high, as compared to other U.S. cities.
19
tehfireisonfire 2 days ago
Ok cool, it still has some of the highest gun murders per capita of all the large cities in the western hemisphere. But it also has by far the strict gun laws in the US. So again why are it's gun crime rates still that high? Surely all the gun control should have stopped it right?

Yet campus. It actually doesn't matter, there's shootings daily in the USA.

This was a shooting in the downtown district where bars are located. I understand your criticism of US gun culture, but criticize us for the right reasons instead of conjecture.

This was off campus at night. The headline just mentions the nearby campus to make it more interesting. A shooting in a college town isn't necessarily a school shooting. This just seems like an after barclose shooting which happens more often in bigger cities
38
GlenBaileyWalker 3 days ago -13
By nearby campus, they mean across the street from the campus. They specifically mention the ped mall which is roughly 500 feet from the campus.
-13
perenniallandscapist 3 days ago -24
They might as well have said that a shooting doesn't count as a school shooting if its only in the parking lot. Close enough for me. Still sad that we just dismiss shootings quite generally.
-24
posthuman04 2 days ago +1
Well except it almost certainly wasn’t about academics or targeting the school. Like previous incidents in downtown Iowa City it’s likely people from out of town doing their business in popular off campus bars.

Sort of depends on what type of college student you are.

Nobody goes to those bars for school related reasons. Even if it were midday, midweek it still wouldn’t be a campus or school related shooting

Strict gun laws aren’t nearly as effective when you can simply drive to a place with looser regulations to get them. An illustrative example of this is Mexico. Mexican citizens have a constitutional right to own guns, and they have tight gun regulations, and only 2 gun stores. Cities closest to US ports of entry have the highest gun crime rates in Mexico, because the vast majority of guns used in crimes there come from the U.S. That said, NYC crime rates are continuously declined since their peak in the 90s, and are lower than many other major cities. New York State had the 3rd lowest gun death rate in the country in 2023, and the city is at this point ranked in the top 15% safest in the U.S. for gun violence.
3
tehfireisonfire 2 days ago -4
I'm using handguns as the example here because there are already federal laws that *should* prevent people from nyc from getting handguns. It is a felony to buy a handgun outside your state of residence, so what more gun laws would prevent the nyc gun violence?
-4
TwoPoundzaSausage 2 days ago -1
> Strict gun laws aren’t nearly as effective when you can simply drive to a place with looser regulations to get them. This statement belies the fact that you have never purchased a gun before, or you don't know the laws. If you purchase a gun in another state, you have to show ID. When you show ID, the firearms dealer runs your info through a background check, which takes into account your state of residence. If you attempt to purchase something that is illegal to possess in your state, the sale is flagged. All gun sales in the US must follow the applicable laws of the home state of the purchaser. An illustrative example of this is Mexico. Non-citizens are outright forbidden from purchasing guns unless they have at least a green card and an active hunting license, and even then they are severely limited in the number of guns they can buy. You can all but guarantee that no Mexican citizen is coming up to the US to buy a bunch of guns to take back to Mexico. >Cities closest to US ports of entry have the highest gun crime rates in Mexico, because ~~the vast majority of guns used in crimes there come from the U.S.~~ of the Drug trade and fighting over control of smuggling routes.
-1
DeadGuyInRoom4 1 day ago +1
Straw purchasers buy them in the U.S. and smuggle them to Mexico. At least [70%](https://www.usatoday.com/story/news/nation/2021/08/25/american-guns-help-arm-mexican-drug-cartels-including-cjng/5586129001/) (and some estimates put the number closer to 90%) of illegal guns seized at crime scenes in Mexico originated in American gun shops. That is fact.

The government already “infringes” on the right to bear arms, for example automatic machine guns, the question is where is the line, and that is a left vs right issue

Having the "ability" to fight against a corrupt government is such a worthless counterpoint in the modern era. You think a bunch of hillbillies with their glocks and hunting rifles would be able mount a rebellion against the government? Maybe in 1800s, when it happened last time. There's literally 0 chance that you owning a gun would make a difference in this scenario.
4
No-Meringue-7317 2 days ago +1
Damn you’re right - whatever you say really has no impact on anything. We should repeal the 1st amendment
1
ToxicJolt124 2 days ago
“A well regulated militia, being necessary to the security of a free state, the right of the people to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed” The actual amendment makes a lot of sense. People just act like the first part doesn’t exist because of D.C. v. Heller
