The child was assaulted by an older child, around 12 years old. It happened in the foster home. The 3 year old child, according to her father, now has nightmares and mood swings.

ShiraCheshire 4 days ago +334
The 12 year old was probably abused too. Kids that young almost never do that kind of thing, unless they themselves were assaulted at which point it becomes very common. So stories like this have many victims.

gogurt2020 4 days ago +91
Exactly, it’s an awful situation that exposes all of the ways the adults failed to protect the children.

kaisadilla_ 4 days ago +38
tbh it doesn't matter if the 12 yo was abused or not. What matters is that these abuses shouldn't happen at all and we are failing hard if we can't provide children in foster homes with a decent level of safety.
38
Fun_Background_8113 3 days ago +22
It matters because we can use that information to prevent further abuse
22
ShiraCheshire 3 days ago +50
No, it matters a lot. It matters a lot that this is a systemic issue that shuffles around kids from abuser to abuser and doesn't give proper support to children who have been raped. It matters that more precautions aren't taken, when child molestation is *known* to lead to young children abusing each other later on. And yes it does matter that these abuses should never happen and that we are failing, but the 12 year old likely having also been abused is *part* of that. It's a sign of just how severe the problem is.

It actually makes me hesitant to ever pursue fostering/adoption. I think it’s something I’d love to do but I’d be so worried about an abused child then abusing my daughter and I just would be scared to risk it
5
look_at_tht_horse 3 days ago +4
My cousin is a foster parent and had to stop taking in teenagers because of the issues. Though young kids aren't perfect either. One of their adopted daughters ~10 years old became out of control (valid given her circumstances before foster care), even choking and trying to kill their younger biological son on multiple occasions. It has ruined their lives. It's not for the faint of heart, that's for sure.

As someone who has worked in an RTC…it’s a shitshow of hand-me-down trauma from top to bottom. No matter how bright-eyed you go in, you learn there are very few you have power to help.

This is NOT true and it is the excuse everybody makes for my abuser. He has never been abused. I was 4, he was about to be 14. He was forgiven, I was forced to forgive him. He's living his best with the support of my whole family, I'm alone. https://web.archive.org/web/20230201101347/https://www.ncsby.org/content/what-causes-sexual-behavior-problem

ShiraCheshire 3 days ago +5
This is a bit of a messy issue and you really need therapy about this if you haven't gotten it. I am so sorry to hear you went through something so awful. It is of course possible for a child that hasn't been abused to abuse others, especially as they get older. You should never be expected to forgive someone who hurt you in such a way, and it was wrong for anyone to ask this of you. Regardless of if your abuser had a reason or past trauma or not, it's still entirely wrong of people to expect you to forgive him. That being said, it is much more common for children who sexually abuse others to be doing it because they were abused themselves. This does not mean that all abused children become abusers, and does not necessarily mean that all abusers were abused- just that it's far more likely there is a cycle of abuse happening, the younger the child who abuses is. This is a known problem in foster homes. The link you're posting here is not only one the website itself chose to remove, and it's not backed up by cited sources. Even your link lists having been abused as something that can cause abusive behavior, among its listed reasons. Scientific research also shows a link between children being abused (with physical violence, sexual assault, or other forms of abuse) being more likely to engage in abuse themselves. I know you've been through something horrific, and that can make topics like this difficult to handle. You should keep in mind though that your particular situation, awful and wrong as it was, does not necessarily apply to every situation in which a child has been abused- or even most of them.
5
One-Fix-5055 3 days ago +2
I feel your comment is very patronizing and don't really appreciate that tone, like you think my previous trauma is not letting me see things clearly. My therapist was very proud of me and discharged me a long time ago. This is something I've talked about countless times with other victims and also in therapy. I don't have my links at hand anymore so yeah, sorry for posting one that was removed, and I can't be arsed to look for them cause I'm not in the mood to relive this, but if you check again the research, your statement is still wrong. You said "kids that young almost do that kind of thing unless they themselves were assaulted". And that's simply not true, the cycle of abuse is more complex. Most children that offend were NOT previously abused, but when you compare non-offenders against offenders, there's a higher percentage of previously abused children on the second group. So while it is a risk factor, it is not the only one and does not mean causation. On top of being wrong, people should also be aware of how damaging this belief is. It puts a target on survivors, making them scared of sharing their experience, fearing being considered a potential offender, and being hypervigilant of their thoughts, fearing they are tainted or cursed, like vampires.

> "She was so long in there," said her father, who is a legal permanent resident in the United States. "I just think that if they would have moved faster, nothing like that would have happened." The father is a legal resident and they still sent her to a foster home where she was sexually abused. I've never hated my own country as much as I do now. Btw, these are the kinds of news stories from PBS that Republicans want to defund? I wonder what their motivations are for that.

Or ordered his secret police to kidnap and murder citizens in broad daylight on the basis of only their skin color. Or tried to overthrow the government and overturn the elections to remain in power forever. Like, fome on. It's just a little post-birth abortion.

I know you know the answer to your question... >I wonder what their motivations are for that. But like it makes me wonder. How many pedophiles do we really have in the US. It should literally be a study. The land of the pedophiles and child molesters and what causes the rich and famous to hunt for children compared to other nations. Is it easier access to kids? Is it related to culture? This pedo thing has been a problem for ages where back in the 80s you had female highschoolers dating men on the mid to upper 20s and sometimes even 30s. How has this not been the forefront reason we have inmates? Replace all the drug addicts with pedos.

Separating families is not normal. It’s risky for the child BECAUSE it makes them vulnerable to predators and abuse. It is not advised by professionals, by statistics, or by our government pre-Donald trump. This is the very real harm that this cruel and reckless policy creates.  This child’s harm is a direct result of the federal governments sadistic obsession with immigrant families.

Capitalism and mythos of the hyper individual have so deeply rotted our social fabric that many either don't feel obligation or don't possess the language to accept the social responsibility necessary to begin to plan to overthrow the current system. Imo the only path to class consciousness and true solidarity in this country will be long-term material suffering like mass unemployment and starvation. And we're still far from that happening; folks are still too deeply entrenched in their comfy little treat bubbles to step outside and acknowledge the carnage, let alone lend a hand.
