7-month-old girl shot and killed in Brooklyn
A 7-month-old girl in a stroller was shot and killed after a man on a moped fired multiple times toward a group of people on a Brooklyn sidewalk in broad daylight, according to police. Shots were fired after 1 p.m. Wednesday near the corner of Moore Street and Humboldt Street in Williamsburg, NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch said at an evening…

A 7-month-old girl in a stroller was shot and killed after gunfire rang out on a Brooklyn street, according to police sources The child's mother and father ran into a nearby bodega for cover. When they looked down into the stroller, they saw their infant daughter covered in blood. Law enforcement sources said the baby had been shot in the head.

The homicide rate of NYC today and the entire country is absolutely minuscule compared to years ago. This is pure fear mongering based on whatever Fox News is selling you.

WildBerryPopTart04 Apr 1, 2026 +136
Yeah, if you dig into this a bit NYC has seen a dramatic reduction in murders in the past 30+ years. The city averaged 6+ murders *per day* in 1990 (2,200 total)…it’s less than 1 now (303 in 2025).

Kxts Apr 2, 2026 +1
They don’t care about statistics. That would require critical thinking. Born and raised in NYC and it seems so many have forgotten what it was like in the 70s/80s. A case of Fox News Brain will do that to you.

zakabog Apr 1, 2026 +123
> You wouldn’t believe how often this shit happens in the NYC. You wouldn't believe how many people live in NYC and have never been anywhere near a gunshot.

BottAndPaid Apr 1, 2026 +36
Same thing living in LA they act like we're dealing with homeless encampments everywhere but in reality it's just trying to find street parking some days. Is homelessness and violence a problem sure. Is the violent crime any where near it once was. Absolute not. And when you look at the issue of homelessness most of it could have been solved with more clear defined and funded social safety nets not bailing out the banks that collapsed large chunks of our society.
36
Derka_Derper Apr 2, 2026 +8
Considering the LA area has a population larger than most states... absolutely none of the issues they have are surprising or out of line, and often handled better than elsewhere.
8
Traditional_Bug_2046 Apr 1, 2026 +8
Also the fires. The amount of people who thought the entire city/county of Los Angeles was burning down was crazy. It's a huge area with a huge population.
8
cjsv7657 Apr 1, 2026 +4
Because people conflate "LA metro area", "greater LA area", and "LA county". The greater LA area is larger than like 10 states. LA county is nearly 10x smaller, with LA being nearly 10x smaller than that.
4
BottAndPaid Apr 1, 2026 +3
Ye my wife's family is from a middle state and after 14 years they finally understand that we live 35 miles of concrete and buildings away from the normal fire spots. They're definitely an issue and a tragic thing we need even better systems in place to deal with but they generally only hit certain areas.

Some of us have multiple kids so we can’t go. Drugs and alcohol are super appealing. And I won’t lie it’s tempting to just spend the rest of my time blurry. But again 3 other children. So I do therapy and meditation. And fight every day to not give up. It’s a literal living nightmare. And the worst part is even with all of the trying your babies still have the trauma of losing their first friend.
68
gingerflakes Apr 2, 2026 +20
I’m so so sorry for your loss. You’re right, I have one child. I cannot imagine being strong enough to carry on. Sending you and your family love.

My husband and I said the same thing the night it happened before we told our children. We knew (there’s clips on YouTube, you can hear it in my voice) but had to wait hours for the confirmation. I don’t think either of us has been as certain of a decision as in that moment.

My second daughter died shortly after birth. When my older daughter was murdered 13 years ago, I wondered what I had to live for. My husband, my friends, my grief support group kept me going. Just barely. Thirteen years later, it still hurts so much. It's so f****** hard. I will survive, though.

rokerroker45 Apr 2, 2026 +16
In new york this would be eligible for first degree murder. Some jurisdictions charge you with actual murder if you accidentally kill a bystander while trying to kill the intended target and NY is one such jurisdiction
16
winterish01 Apr 2, 2026 +3
It will likely fall under felony murder 1st degree. Especially given the location and tactics of shooting, I highly doubt the gun was legal.

Expecting my first baby right now and this sounds like the worst nightmare. Can't imagine how the parents are feeling.
326
MommyLovesPot8toes Apr 1, 2026 +232
Don't. Don't try to imagine. However hard and painful it is to imagine *now*, it will be infinitely more painful once your baby is here. People say that parenting opens up new levels in your heart. It's like going from a black and white TV to 4K. The highs are higher and the lows are lower and there are colors you never knew existed. But also empathy is deeper and more cutting, and harder to ignore. Thinking of the horrible things that have happened to other children can become truly paralyzing in those first few months or years.

I have a 9 week old, my first and only baby after 10+ years of infertility. This is so true. I can’t even read the article and I can’t read any more comments either. Those poor parents. I couldn’t go on

1
fat4fat Apr 2, 2026 +40
Surely it should be hard to ignore? Ignoring gun violence is how America has gotten to this point in the first place. How many kids just this week have died due to gun violence in the US? The answer is between 48-49 kids per week, averaging 7 per day. Ignoring it won’t make it go away because one day it could be your child and then you can’t ignore it.
40
MommyLovesPot8toes Apr 2, 2026 +1
I'm not saying these problems should be ignored. I'm saying there are people who should be focusing on it and people who should not. New parents who aren't in a position to do anything about violence and gun culture can take a step back for those first few years. Let those who are feeling more stable - less hormonal, less sleep deprived, less overwhelmed by newly-developed protective drives - take on the burden for a bit.
1
fat4fat Apr 2, 2026
Letting others take on the burden didn’t stop it happening to this mother who only had her baby 7 months ago. Americans need to step up, think of the impact people like Mothers Against Drunk Driving had. You can’t always take a step back and expect others to care.

They won't. New York got rid of Capital Punishment. Like other states, the suffering of the poor criminals is allowed to outweigh the suffering of their victims.
-35
KingMario05 Apr 2, 2026 +24
Where did I say I wanted capital punishment? Doesn't that make the criminals a martyr? Lock them up, life imprisonment, no parole and sent to the belly of Rikers. If God wants them dead, natural inmate selection will do it.
24
Baby-Zayy Apr 2, 2026 +2
Do you know what martyrdom is? Do you think dudes fellow banger friends would see him get the death sentence for killing a toddler and try to emanate that? They do this shit because they think they’re cool and they think they’ll make easy money. Yes, in a sense they do martyr each other for certain things. This wouldn’t be one of those

6
CuckBuster33 Apr 2, 2026 +14

14
JimHeckdiver Apr 2, 2026 +7
So what exactly do you think it SHOULD be about for someone like this? Reform so they can rejoin society and feel sorry about what they did? Really? They didn't commit burglary or some non violent crime. They killed someone. That person is dead forever. Why does their killer deserve a chance?
7
Baby-Zayy Apr 2, 2026 +1
You’re arguing for reform for an individual that was willing to fire a gun blindly into a crowd that included women and children. That person should get the death penalty. Reform is for those who are capable of it and deserve it.
1
PiBoy314 Apr 2, 2026 +2
There is no standard of evidence you can have to justify killing someone found guilty of a crime. One innocent execution for every million guilty executed would be too many, and we all know the rate is higher than that.
2
Formal-Stage940 Apr 2, 2026 +1
>That person should get the death penalty. Reform is for those who are capable of it and deserve it. How do you know that the person is incapable of reform. Ive always heard this argument and noone explains why. Theres literally no psychological reason why murderers cant be reformed. >deserve it. Reform isnt a luxury. The concept of "deserve" makes no sense here. If we can turn bad people into good people, them whats the point in killing them. Just because youre mad? If you stop thinking with purely emotions youd realize that the death penalty has no actual benefit
1
Baby-Zayy Apr 2, 2026
Yep, you’d rather walk the streets with people who kill children rather than wash your hands of them.  A perfect encapsulation of why human beings are fucked up today
0
Formal-Stage940 Apr 2, 2026 +3
>Yep, you’d rather walk the streets with people who kill children rather than wash your hands of them.  Holy strawman wtf? "I think reform is better than death penalty" "sO wE sHoULd lEt ChILd kILlErs rUN frEe?"
3
Baby-Zayy Apr 2, 2026 +3
Again, cause your reading comprehension seems to be on its last leg.  No one here said reform doesn’t work or shouldn’t be used. We’re discussing a person who was willing to kill not only a child, but any number of innocent bystanders.  And you can’t help but cry “oh but what about reform?” You clearly argued in your own words for reforming child killers, weirdo
3
SnepButts Apr 2, 2026 +4
Killing more people is revenge, not justice. Besides, if you think just dying and being done with it is worse than life in a small cell, you've gotta be smoking something. That being said, these parents would walk free if I were on the jury for them getting revenge.

Absolutely gut-wrenching. A baby in a stroller shouldn’t be anywhere near a bullet, ever. At minimum, call your local reps and ask what they’re actually doing about gun violence.
10
zakabog Apr 1, 2026 +119
> At minimum, call your local reps and ask what they’re actually doing about gun violence. In NYC? Short of border checks across our highway system there are no local laws in NYC that could have prevented this from happening. A criminal with a firearm purchased from outside of our state, like almost all firearms used in gang violence within our state, pulled a gun in the street and missed their intended target.
119
DefinitelyNotAliens Apr 1, 2026 +26
Gun restrictions aren't the only way to change gun violence. We have school programs, youth diversion programs, drug and mental health diversion programs, community enforcement, pre-K expansion, school programs. You can affect change before guns ever enter into the question.
26
zakabog Apr 2, 2026 +4
> have school programs, youth diversion programs, drug and mental health diversion programs, community enforcement, pre-K expansion, school programs. NYC has all of this, but we're fucked because you still have some guy in Georgia purchasing 10 of the same weapon in one go with no questions asked, then the guns are mysteriously stolen and end up being recovered at the scene of a crime in NYC or some other major city with tighter restrictions.

These solutions are great for people in 20-30 years, but would have done nothing for this dead child today.
-7
Traditional_Bug_2046 Apr 2, 2026 +30
This person is suggesting a middle ground between don't do anything and fight a losing battle. There will be kids 20-30 years from now that could be helped by taking action now.
30
PossibleChapter919 Apr 1, 2026 +20
This is the way i see it. Every time there is gun violence, just ask, What could have prevented this? Most (all) of the time its criminals breaking the law. Rules do not apply to them.
20
Chadham_Forsythe Apr 2, 2026 +11
There’s a few factors to this equation. First you have to consider gang politics. It’s different in NY and Chicago than the gangs in LA that are more organized. NY gangs are mostly small sets of teenagers from the same area who rob and kill other teenagers from other areas. Already, the fact that most of these idiots doing the shooting are under 21 years old, means that none of them could legally purchase a handgun even if they didn’t have a felony already. (which many of them probably do) The point being: how the hell is the government supposed to deal with teenagers getting access to guns? There’s clearly adults in the lives of these teens that are either purchasing guns for them or selling guns to them. What new laws could be put into place to prevent this? It’s already illegal. Getting a handgun is already difficult in New York City, but you can easily just drive to a different state, buy one, and bring it back. It’s a shit show. I don’t see a way out of it, to be real.
11
Grvin Apr 2, 2026 +11
Honestly great comment, however one slight inaccuracy. You can't just go to another state and buy a handgun, as Federal law prohibits the purchase of a handgun outside one's state of residence. This is both from an FFL (dealer) or privately. Any dealer interested in keeping their license would never sell or transfer a firearm to somebody that doesn't have ID that's matches the state they are both in. Not saying the importation of handguns doesn't happen, but it's likely not done by residents of New York
11
zakabog Apr 2, 2026 +2
> Not saying the importation of handguns doesn't happen, but it's likely not done by residents of New York People regularly live in NY and have a primary residence out of state, or move here from another state and still have family and friends back home. They get the promise of a quick buck for making a bunch of straw purchases, you get a bunch of handguns. They don't have to tell anyone what happened to the guns, when ATF traces them back, the straw purchaser can just say "I gifted that weapon to my cousin/it was stolen" and there's no consequences unless there's solid evidence tying them to the person who ended up using the weapon.
2
Comfortable_Seat1444 Apr 2, 2026 +1
I don't know how feasible this could be but I think you should have a yearly inspection for your gun, like how you have to get a car inspection done, and if you don't show up with your gun at the time of inspection bc you pawned it off to someone else without paper work or anything then you get fined monthly until you have the gun back in your possession. Bc all the people I knew in college and highschool who had guns had bought them illegally from people who did buy them legally. So if you can regulate that illegal transfer, it stops the idiots most likely to use it for dumb reasons (18-21 year olds).  I guess some people can 3d print guns, but as of now the type of people doing that aren't the same people shooting other young adults in broad daylight.
1
Unlucky_Welcome9193 Apr 2, 2026 +5
Hard disagree, there are many times that gun laws make it far to easy for people to obtain guns. NYC has very strict gun laws, therefore most criminal gun owners in NYC purchase guns out of state. If ALL states had strict gun laws, it would be much harder for everyone to get guns. An example of bad gun laws enabling crime is violent domestic abusers who aren't banned from owning guns shooting their partner. Another example is children shooting people with their parents guns.
5
PossibleChapter919 Apr 2, 2026 +2
Ok. What law would have prevented this particular crime from happening? Assume he hasn't been arrested for domestic abuse and didn't steal the gun from his parents.
2
bennetto4 Apr 2, 2026 +1
\> NYC has very strict gun laws, therefore most criminal gun owners in NYC purchase guns out of state. This is absolutely false. You cannot drive to another state, purchase a firearm and just take it home. If you purchase out of state, the firearm has to be transferred to an FFL in the state which you reside in where you'll then fill out a form and need to pass a background check before you can actually take the firearm home.
1
zakabog Apr 2, 2026 +6
The thing is, if the rest of the country had better laws, criminals wouldn't be able to so easily obtain firearms.
6
zzyul Apr 2, 2026 +31
Or if we actually punished the people we find with stolen guns. But that would be mean since so many of them are under 18. Where you see compassion they see weakness.
31
BostonShaun Apr 2, 2026 +12
This times 10000000x and yet enough people won’t see it. The amount of times I’ve seen “mandatory” become “suggestion” regarding firearm laws/sentences in MA is bad.
12
zakabog Apr 2, 2026 -5
Ah yes ["stolen" weapons.](https://ny1.com/nyc/all-boroughs/news/2015/05/5/officer-s-death-highlights-problem-of-illegal-guns-ending-up-on-nyc-streets)
-5
zzyul Apr 2, 2026 +7
Here’s a simple solution that can drastically cut gun violence. Anyone found in possession of a stolen firearm receives a mandatory minimum sentence of 10 years with no opportunity for parole and no plea bargains. You want guns off the street? Then get rid of the people who are bringing them onto the street.
7
SilverAgedSentiel Apr 2, 2026 +7
Criminal Possession of a Stolen Firearm (NY Penal Law § 165.52) This is a Class D felony, carrying up to 7 years in prison. So like 3 more years is gonna make the difference here?
7
WhollyHolyHoley Apr 2, 2026 +3
‘Up to’
3
OnettNess Apr 2, 2026 +3
This also requires actually enforcing the laws on the books as written, which I think we as a country have an enormous problem with right now.
3
zakabog Apr 2, 2026 +2
The people bringing them to the street are the [original purchasers](https://apnews.com/article/guns-straw-purchases-trafficking-faf5df830c0a948b9f6a34767678f88f) that then sell them on the black market and report them stolen.
2
itslikewoow Apr 1, 2026 +18
Gun violence can’t really be addressed at the local level though. The second amendment hampers any potential change at more local levels.
18
DefinitelyNotAliens Apr 1, 2026 +14
Gun violence can be helped by youth diversion programs that change the systematic forces that end up with high numbers of youth involved in crime and gangs. They can't restrict gun access at the city level but they can change how the school to prison pipeline works, local diversion programs, policing practices, school programs, youth programs for low income youth so they aren't running loose over breaks, etc. Changing how you react to systematic forces at the periphery vs just focusing on purchase of guns.
14
Traditional_Bug_2046 Apr 1, 2026 +5
People really struggle with finding a middle ground between giving up and fighting a losing battle on principle.
