It's a lot more, it's part of his strategy and he was very open about it. Make enough controversy that the media against him can't focus on a single thing. It's been over a year, month after month after month, it's always something new, no one has talked about tariffs, how it's making things expensive, essentially a tax for the poor, the H1B visa, the DOGE, how it's supposed to reduce cost, but now he's funding a war, how the tariff has made it expensive for manufacturers to manufacture materials in the US, the WHO withdrawal and many more. our last lesson saw nearly the highest turnout of any election before after the 2020 elections where we increased our voter turnout near the 50% in my county where I was an election official.  We were at 72% eligavle voter turnout, the last election was hardly less, and it seems obvious that anyone who didn't vote in this past election who did vote in 2020 I was going with a whole lot of disinformation campaigns that we're designed to target specific voting box in order to defect the outcome of the election. Then the US tourism industry wonders why us Canadians refuse to go down there for almost any leisure/vacation means and are suffering from it, we were by far the largest volume of foreign tourism for decades and now there's articles and mayors of attraction cities from California to Nevada, Washington, Vermont, Florida etc pleading for us to come back. Damage is done, even I used to get sent for work and would visit the US often personally for vacation, at least once a year even during the orange psychopath's first term but absolutely not now, when a mother and a 7 year old child (besides many more already randomly detained before this) get locked up under this administration for absolutely no reason other than quotas. Can't wait to see how this goes down for foreign visitors for the US World Cup venues at this rate.

In 2015 a rightwing president was elected making meritocracy the justification for the “change”. Chevrolet made commercials about their cars being expensive saying they were “exclusive” and were only for those who merit them… sales plunged as that was very unpopular and the commercials stopped overnight. Yup. They are highly motivated to lock people up. If there's some paperwork or processing issue, there's zero reason to have these people in detention while you sort it out. And if being a stepfather rather than a bio father is the problem, it seems like the Canadian consulate could help facilitate getting the child to her grandmother in Canada. I'm not agreeing with the situation but just explaining it - the child is a Canadian citizen and her visa is likely also being shown as "having an issue", like her mother's. The claim is that the child does not have the legal right to be in the US. Again, I disagree with jailing children - in this case, the State is saying they can't release the child to stepfather (citizen) as the child does not have appropriate status. All that to say, this is a fucked up situation

I fully agree. It's monstrous keeping the child incarcerated if there is a way. That said, given these immigration issues, would the child be able to return to the US after, if she is separated from her mom now? She's been living with her stepdad since age 2, so only likely really knows her stepfather as dad. If she goes back to Canada, and can't get a new visa back to the US, that can also be very difficult for the child too. It's a complicated and fucked up situation that is occurring because of shitty (and evil) politics.

Immigration agents are stopping people with irregular visas that want to leave the US and putting them in cages. For example, a French guy learned by his employer that his work visa didn't get renewed and he was now an illegal. He drove to the Canadian border to leave the US, explained the situation to border agents and got sent to ICE detention for weeks.

Not only that, the step father might not be a legal guardian for the child. For example at the airport, they would not let the child travel with the step father without permission from probably both legal guardians. If you are a mother, you still need a note from the father. A lot of step parents do not legally adopt the step children.

We were completing a large new bridge project linking Canada & the US (Gordie Howe Bridge). It was supposed to open later this year, but the US admin is now threatening to block it indefinitely. Hear a lot of American rhetoric about how "we don't need them, they need us", and even jokes about tearing the bridge down just to spite Canadians. Incredibly saddening

If someone has a fixed address, a job, a US spouse, and a visa, even if it has issues, you give them an appearance date to straighten out their paper work. You certainly don’t take a 7 year old into custody. What a shit hole country the US has become.
