An 85 year old widow of a US military veteran being locked in immigration detention for over two weeks is the kind of story that makes America look genuinely cruel to the rest of the world.
You can support border security and still recognise theres something deeply wrong with treating elderly people like dangerous criminals over paperwork issues. The image of children crying in detention while an 85 year old woman sleeps in a crowded dorm is not exactly screaming freedom and dignity.

I just recently read about a woman who was in jail in alabama for abusing drugs while pregnant- endangering the baby. , being told off for wetting herself when her water broke and left to give birth on the floor. Other inmates got the baby to start breathing. Guards punished them for helping and told them they should have shoved the baby back in.
Keep in mind that she was in jail because she was endangering her baby, and this was how they treated her while pregnant. She still has nightmares that they both died.
This is not just immigration, it is a system wide issue that dehumanises any kind of prisoner.

I was an EMT in a town that had a county lockup, and treated a woman who was miscarrying in the holding cell. The guard told us she "wouldn't stop having her period all over us even though we told her to hold it." She had nothing except for toilet paper available to her for hygiene. I made her a makeshift pad out of gauze for the ride, and the guard almost didn't let her use it until I screamed at him (for which I almost got fired). A decade later it still makes me furious.

Reminder Obama admin deported more people than Trump has in both terms, and it didn't require sending goon squads into cities to ask for people's papers and, dragging people into camps without due process, and denying prisoners water, and medication, while beating up and shooting civilians protesting.
It was literally done mostly through the courts and issuing warrants for arrest and deportations and targeted mostly violent criminals and immigration fraud.

He "contacted a colleague to request that his stepmom be detained, Calhoun County Probate Judge Shirley Millwood wrote in a court order.
The request came after Bill's death when Tony and his brother Gary Ross were trying to take control of their late father's estate, the filing said.
The estate consisted of Bill's modest $172,000 home, roughly $1,500 in cash and about $10,000 in personal property, including his Mercedes-Benz C300 and a truck.
Marie-Therese told Tony and Gary, a US Coast Guard veteran, that she did not want her late husband's assets, and only wanted enough money to return to her France to be with her children, the judge wrote.
But a dispute quickly arose, with Tony and Gary having taken both of Bill's vehicles from the property the day after his death, according to the documents.
Roughly a week later after the brothers tried to force their stepmother to turn Bill's phone over to them, Millwood wrote.
Tony and Gary then had the water, electricity and internet at the home turned off.
They also had all of the mail rerouted from the residence, which included notices from immigration services that were sent to Marie-Therese, the judge said."\*
He did this to an 86 year old widow, and she can only speak of the babies inside the Louisiana immigrant detention centers. the difference in their priorities is astounding.

To be fair it sounds like the husband was MAGA and "groomed" his bride.
>Her experience changed the way she sees the United States and its immigration policies, Ross said. Her husband was a Trump supporter and they used to watch Fox News together. But she was shocked to learn firsthand how immigrants are treated inside immigration facilities.
She used to view the U.S. as a “country of freedom, where people are not arrested based on how they look, and where those who are detained are treated fairly and with respect.” But the women she met did not deserve to be detained, she said. “Their only fault was to be South American.”
As she recovers in France, Ross still thinks about them: “When I left this jail in Louisiana, I told them that if I ever had the chance to speak about them, I would do it, to help them.”

I’m not sure groomed is the right word here: they were both adults when they married, and it doesn’t sound like she was particularly sheltered.
If she’s really gone from believing that France should have similar policies to understanding how dehumanizing and wrong they are, fantastic.
But decent people are able to grasp that concept without having to experience it themselves
She absolutely got screwed over by her stepsons and in an ideal world they’d be charged with something,
26

None of that screams grooming. That just sounds like the very common conservative ‘if it doesn’t affect me, it doesn’t concern me’.
If she had been paying attention to what people have been saying for the last few decades, none of what she ‘discovered’ in detention would’ve come as a surprise. People have been talking about this for ages. It shouldn’t be a shock to anyone.
11
BlackStarBluesMay 14, 2026

That's why i used quotation marks in my comment to indicate grooming adjacent. She ought to have known better growing up in post Vichy France. Instead she went along with the prevailing narrative of her surroundings in Alabama. If the husband had been an ardent defender of Civil Rights for minorities, she likely would have been fine with that too.
-4
palcatrazMay 14, 2026
+5
But it isn't even grooming adjacent.
First of all, you cannot just assume she knew better. France still had a lot of racist folks post Vichy too.
Secondly, grooming (or even something adjacent) implies concentrated effort on the husband's part to change her views. Which wouldn't be true if either she already shared his views before the marriage, or if she changed her views on her own accord.
Calling this grooming, without any indication that there was pressure from another person, just gets to close to absolving this person from her pretty rancid views.

Details I am going to include from the early news stories. The widow stated to some reporter that she wanted nothing from the estate and all she wanted was to return to France. Meanwhile, the step children had offered her some amount of money (I think it was $10,000), which she rejected. This money would have be sufficient to "return" to France if she were sincere in this statement, so clearly she had some additional financial expectations that she did not share with that reporter. Meanwhile, she overstayed her Visa, missed her hearing, and "somehow" ICE learned of her and we know the rest.
As for being a veteran's widow, yes she was, but she was only a wife of a veteran for 10 months when she was already 84 after moving here from France (wedding April 2025 - death Jan 2026). I think AP News is milking the term in this case.
Not taking sides here, and the step kids sound like shits. But I get annoyed news articles pick and choose the details they publicize.

**Citizenship and Status Timeline**
• **Citizenship:** She is a **French citizen**. She has never been a U.S. citizen.
• **Arrival in U.S.:** She moved to the United States in **1982** with her husband.
• **Legal Status History:** \* She initially entered the U.S. on a **B-2 (Tourist) Visa**.
• She lived in the U.S. for approximately **42 years** (from 1982 until her detention in early 2024).
• During much of this time, she lived as an "undocumented" immigrant after her original visa terms expired.
**Visa Overstay and Legal Issues**
• **Period of Overstay:** While the exact date her original B-2 visa expired is not specified in public reports, she was effectively in overstay status for several decades.
• **Previous Legal Action:** In **1997**, a federal immigration judge ordered her to be deported. However, that order was not executed at the time, and she remained in the country.
• **Reporting Requirements:** Prior to her 2024 detention, she had been under "orders of supervision." This meant ICE was aware of her presence but allowed her to remain in the community provided she checked in regularly with immigration officials.
**Date of Detention:** She was taken into custody on **January 23, 2024**, during a routine check-in with ICE in New Orleans.
1997 - Bill Clinton
2024 - Joe Biden
