90 Years of Film Compilation at the 2018 Oscars.

Posted by Donatello45

The 2018 Oscars celebrated 90 years of film magic with a stunning compilation honoring cinema’s greatest moments. From classic black-and-white masterpieces to modern blockbusters, the montage captured the art, emotion, and history of Hollywood in just minutes, a heartfelt tribute to storytelling. I wonder what the 100 year one will be like.

I was afraid Jurassic Park wasn’t gonna make into the montage for a bit there, that shot with the T-Rex is one of, if not my earliest memory of being at the movies!

It's an Oscar w*****.  I'm also glad they added non-Oscar movies.

Some doofus on Listnook was proclaiming that Spielberg is not a great director yesterday. That shot alone is better than 98% of other directors' entire filmography. Pure f****** cinema.

I will fight fairly indignantly that the T-Rex escape scene in Jurassic Park is PEAK cinema. There’s just nothing else like it.

For me it was the whales swimming at the very start of Little Mermaid. First movie I saw in the cinemas. Came in slightly late and that was the first image I saw on a screen that big. Burnt into my brain and was transfixed.

This was incredible. My tears started running down when Roger Ebert popped up.🥹

Loved Ebert's writing and analysis. Even when I disagreed with his thoughts, I took something new away from his thinking on the film. The greatest film critic, in my opinion.

Did not expect a Texas Chainsaw Massacre appearance.

This reminded me to the closing montage from babylon. Both are great tho

When I watched the montage from Babylon I got the sense they couldn't afford shots that featured very popular actors. There's very few in it. Really drags it down.

I read it as more about the endless forward march of technology and the countless artists wiped away in the name of progress

This was a decent montage and I liked how it actually stitched scenes together in ways the editors were clearly having fun with (like how we see the Enterprise hit warp speed which then cuts to Doc from BttF looking amazed as his body lights up from the strick of lightning, stuff like that was clever). The closing montage at the end of Babylon was a flat clip show set to nifty music that only had the most surface level visual/thematic cohesion. I thought it was kind of embarrassing.

Crazy how hard you missed the point. The Babylon ending montage is to meant to be an exploration of different epochs in film in relation to the technology available, which is why it goes from silent, to talkies, to color, to the rise of effects driven movies, to CGI and then to mocap / full CGI worlds with Avatar. It intentionally highlights the movies that are most responsible for these transitions and that spearheaded the use of said techologies in film writ large. All you did with your comment is betray your own lack of knowledge in regards to film history and insteaded opted to praise a montage which is inherently more surface level since it is just stitching together similar beats without any care for the historical context. Don't get me wrong, I really like the Oscar montage too, but your comment is kind of embarassing.

I don’t understand why the Oscar’s get so much hate. Sure some years are better than others but you get some genuinely great stuff and the in memoriam is always a tear jerker. Thanks op i forgot about this moment. Beautiful

It frustrates me that some of the most powerful performances shown in this montage didn't get Oscars or even nominations and neither did the film. Yet there are Oscar films and actors that did get awards, that aren't in the montage. For example Shakespeare in love - clean sweep at the Oscars in almost every category. Not included for a second. The same year, 1999 - The green mile famously didn't win any Oscars, despite earth shatteringly powerful performances, and an excellent movie. Michael Clarke Duncan role was literally playing out his injustice in real life. Makes his performance even more powerful and stunning.

Watching something like this is makes me feel honored to have worked in film albeit a short time, but it was the best time of my life.

Does anyone know where that ending score is from or what it's called? I recognise it but not sure where from.

I remember this montage so clearly because I RAN to Listnook to ask about the shot at 0:20. I watched the film (Sunrise) straight away and loved it! And yes, it's a stunning compilation, I sensed immediately it was something special.

What's the music at 2:20-2:52? I guess obvious but rest is Interstellar - Forrest Gump - Lawrence of Arabia - ?? - Love Actually

It’s from the Mad Max: Fury Road soundtrack, titled ‘Let Them Up’ - the bits used starts at around 35 seconds in

Very similar in purpose to the ending film montage of The Great Movie Ride that was at Walt Disney World. Just a huge celebration of movies and what they are.

It'll be this exact one, but with 30 extra seconds with films from the last 10 years 😂
