I guess it depends what they do with it. The first movie's success was also due, in part, cause of its guerilla marketing.

At the time, that marketing was so effective because it led people to believe that BW might be an actual found footage film. Obviously, it won’t be the same sell this time around. Found footage style horror is a bit more worn at this point.

I remember the website with the missing person photos and clues. I honestly didn't know if these filmmakers were killed or not. I also recall seeing this movie in the theaters and it generally creeped me out!

Were there big found footage films beforehand or was this the first of its kind? I was fourteen when it came out and from the buzz I remember not knowing if it was in fact real or not

I guess cannibal holocaust is the oldest one I can think of.

The first modern found footage film, it seems. Here's a good article, if you're interested: https://screenrant.com/what-was-first-found-footage-movie/

IIRC, the director was put on trial, as people thought it was a snuff film. He had to have the actors testify that they were in fact, not killed.

This movie was about timing, marketing and also kinda making the found footage genre a mainstream thing.
It’s now been done to death and in this age there is no way to market this like it’s anything other than an IP cash grab

Wait, wasn't there already a Blair Witch remake?

Kind of, in 2016, but it was also a sequel of sorts, I think.

I can't see this project working out. The found footage genre has been played out to death, and if they try to make the new one authentic to 2020s culture and tropes it would have to be done entirely in vertical video with every other line of dialogue being "BRO WHAT WAS THAT BRO, CHAT DID YOU SEE THAT BRO?"

I am surprised regarding some of the names behind this project, namely Jason Blum. It's a risky gamble to take on this project and finance it.

The BWP was successful because it's found-footage approach with a generally unknown cast was a novelty to the movie-going public at the turn of the 21st century.
I really don't think you can remake that, and get an imagination piqued audience like the original received. Audiences are a bit more jaded these days. IMO.
