Honestly feels like the closest to Punisher MAX since War Zone. Feels like they’re setting up Frank to be his most unhinged and ruthless self, with the hallucinations.

Upbeat_Tension_8077 Apr 9, 2026 +247
If there's some vibes reminiscent of We Own This City (since it shares the same director), I'll be very happy

Yeah, Green being behind the camera is another reason I’m hopeful for this to be good.

Without david simon i doubt it will writing wise, but Im hyped to hear it has a good director

It’s going to be interesting to see how they go from this to PG-13 Frank in Brand New Day. I have faith that it will be handled well.

Honestly I don't see Spidey debating Frank, he will outright call him out and just web him. He isn't like Matt trying to rational Frank Castle, he will say it as he sees it.
40
AgentPoYo Apr 9, 2026 +24
now you've got me wanting a scene in BND where its just Spidey, Daredevil, and Frank on a rooftop debating the morality of what they do. Matt - I've got to break some bones sometimes, Peter - I'm constantly pulling my punches so I don't kill people, Frank - Kill them all and let God sort them out.
24
EruditusMaximus Apr 9, 2026 +13
I swear, at this point, BND is just shaping up to be a Defenders movie and I wouldn’t hate it.
13
Worthyness Apr 9, 2026 +13
With the fight choreographers from Shang Chi too. That's gonna be a win
13
Efficient-Memory7105 Apr 9, 2026 +12
Honestly, the Defenders actors (if they are in Brand New Day) deserve a big MCU film W They were unceremoniously dumped after corporate fuckery and like 2-3 seasons of "somewhat underwhelming" content, but at least a solid 3-4 seasons of 9/10 material. I really hope they pull the Defenders off and bring back another couple seasons of shenanigans with Danny, Luke, Jessica, and Matt.

Spider-Man: Brand New Defenders
3
ToiletHum0ur Apr 10, 2026 +2
"I implore you to reconsider!" "Hmm, okay."
2
Moonson90 Apr 9, 2026 +49
I imagine it will be a running gag in the film. The Punisher will be trying to brutally murder the bad guys, and Spider-Man will keep stopping him from doing it.
49
RealJohnGillman Apr 9, 2026 +28
I mean 12A ***/*** PG-13 films are allowed to feature murder, and even onscreen neck snaps, decapitations: there just cannot be any red blood.
28
SeniorMoonlight21 Apr 9, 2026 +5
>any red blood Could they get around this by making it any other color than red?
5
RealJohnGillman Apr 9, 2026 +20
Yes: it’s what *Predator: Badlands* did (though I believe they weren’t trying to get that at first). Also to be specific, it’s a certain amount of red blood for a certain amount of time they’re not allowed to show: they can have small amounts shown quickly.
20
TravelerSearcher Apr 9, 2026 +9
I was told that's also why Kill Bill Vol. 1 switched to a whole black and white sequence near the end because they went the other direction: there was so *much* red blood spray it would have gotten an NC-17 rating instead of R.
9
Worthyness Apr 9, 2026 +3
Characters can also just be non-human as well. If they look human and bleed some sort of red, then it's an R rating. But if they're human looking and bleed white and are robots, totally fine
3
SA_22C Apr 9, 2026 +2
It's also how Star Trek VI managed to have that absolutely brutal zero-g combat scene: all the Klingon blood was as pink as pepto-bismol.
2
KTR1988 Apr 9, 2026 +6
In Alita: Battle Angel you have humanoid characters getting their limbs, head and even faces cut off and it's fine because they're androids with blue synthetic blood.
6
AgentLXXXVIII Apr 10, 2026 +3
Exactly, people keep forgetting that Winter Soldier was also PG-13 and Bucky killed a shit ton of people in that movie.
3
spendouk23 Apr 9, 2026 +17
In the trailer I thought the scene where spidey webs up his mouth just as he was about to swear was really well done. It doesn’t try and censor Frank, and it keeps it spider-man funny
17
Worthyness Apr 9, 2026 +15
Punisher was a spider-man character before he got his initial solo run, so it has been done.

All I remember from punisher war zone is the guy getting shot with a bazooka
16
woahitsshant Apr 9, 2026 +6
the parkour seeking rocket? what about the guy getting his face punched in?
6
Bang_the_unknown Apr 9, 2026 +2
Punisher War Zone neared Machine Girl levels of splatter and I love it for that even if it’s not what I would technically call a “good movie.”
2
confusing_roundabout Apr 9, 2026 +2
The best bit is the shotgun kill while he's holding the little girl in his other arm. Peak punisher. The practical effects of the head explosion are crazy.
2
hacky_potter Apr 9, 2026 +59
Why can’t THIS be what they put in theaters? Give me a 90 minute violent Punisher movie on the big screen
59
imadragonyouguys Apr 9, 2026 +115
They did, nobody watched it.
115
confusing_roundabout Apr 9, 2026 +56
For real, War Zone is one of the best comicbook movies imo. Yes the villain is a bit shit but it perfectly captures the black comedy aspect of the comics, and Ray Stevenson was perfect.
56
Khiva Apr 9, 2026 +24
Wait, *Titus f****** Pullo* was the **Punisher**? That might be too much manly to quite process. Just reading it is giving me the vapers.
24
Worthyness Apr 9, 2026 +16
If you want a punisher movie where he just goes around killing people, that movie is exactly that movie.
16
confusing_roundabout Apr 9, 2026 +2
I watched it at 11pm on a Friday night after a shitty week at work and I'm convinced that's the best way to experience the movie.
2
ArchDucky Apr 9, 2026 +11
That movie is insanely f****** awesome. They trained him not how to fight, but how to clear a room like The Punisher. There's BTS of him clearing rooms with BB Guns and stunt guys shooting back at him. They put in a lot of effort only to have nobody watch it. It was also just as close to NC-17 as you could possibly get.
11
Comic_Book_Reader Apr 9, 2026 +7
They released it in f****** DECEMBER. You don't need to work at NASA to figure out why no one saw it. The director also openly stated that she got into fights with Lionsgate about the movie so there's that.
7
jadedflames Apr 10, 2026 +5
I am just now learning that War Zone’s director was a German-Palestinian former kickboxer, teen gang member and stuntwoman!? How have I never heard of this woman before?
5
Comic_Book_Reader Apr 10, 2026 +3
That might be the weirdest combo I've ever heard of and I read an interview yesterday with an actor in the upcoming Tomb Raider show whose fianceé is a lawyer who does cheerdance.
3
cubitoaequet Apr 9, 2026 +3
People also don't talk about how f****** funny that movie is. Criminally underappreciated super hero movie.
3
anilsen Apr 9, 2026 +6
I highly recommend the episode of How Did This Get made about it, featuring the director Lexi Alexander. https://www.earwolf.com/episode/punisher-war-zone/
6
Cybot5000 Apr 9, 2026 +30
Not the same. That was the pre-MCU when comic book movies were very hit or miss. Don't forget before we had Charlie Cox there was the Ben Affleck Daredevil lol
30
darthstupidious Apr 9, 2026 +12
Yeah it's hard to compare those original Punisher flicks with the quality of superhero stuff we get these days. The original Thomas Jane film was pretty meh (it never knew whether it wanted to be a mass market action-thriller or a legit Punisher story so it tried to do both) and the Ray Stevenson flick was schlocky mess fun that had almost no marketing (I was the only one in the theater that opening weekend).
12
kf97mopa Apr 10, 2026 +3
> The original Thomas Jane film The Thomas Jane one was a remake. The original was with Dolph Lundgren. Yeah…
3
jadedflames Apr 10, 2026 +3
Michael Clarke Duncan was an AMAZING Kingpin though.
3
earthwulf Apr 9, 2026 +6
I liked Affleck's DD. He showed the toll superheroing takes on a body
6
Prax150 Apr 10, 2026 +2
They're still very hit or miss. The difference is more people went to theaters back then and we had way less options for watching at home so studios could take more risks with movies at various ranges of budgets. Disney overdid it with Marvel during phase 3/4 or the MCU and they've had to cut back a lot lately. Not only in theaters but on Disney+. So what filters out to theaters is only going to be the stuff they're relatively sure will make them a lot of money. The fact that we're getting more Jon Berthnal punisher at all is a miracle in and of itself, no matter how they're releasing it.
2
nomorecannibalbirds Apr 9, 2026 +3
And a lot of people who watched it didn’t understand that you weren’t supposed to take it 100% seriously. It’s supposed to be silly and over the top.
3
dadvader Apr 9, 2026 +5
I'm sure people will watch this one. Hopefully Brand New Day give him some real life. I'd love a team-up between him and Daredevil on IMAX in full R-Rated glory.
5
Act_of_God Apr 9, 2026 +2
It was 20 years ago and before marvel became what it is today
2
Nullhitter Apr 9, 2026 +2
Yeah, but this was back in 2008. Jon Bernthal's Punisher is more successful and mainstream than previous Punisher adaptations.
2
Rogendo Apr 9, 2026 +2
I think this might also play into the possible mindfuckery he may be experiencing in the next Spiderman. Like maybe Jean Grey(?) is trying to use his ghosts to trigger/communicate with him in some scheme to escape the prison we see in the Spiderman trailer
2
Phoam_ Apr 9, 2026 +345
OotL, is this supposed to be a bridge between Born Again season 1 and Brand New Day for Frank ?
345
Comic_Book_Reader Apr 9, 2026 +285
It's set during the events of season 2 but it's its own self-contained story.
285
KaJaHa Apr 9, 2026 +68
So no need to be caught up on any other Marvel stuff? I am far enough behind for that to be a nonstarter at this point 😅
68
Paranitis Apr 9, 2026 +61
Ehh, kinda? I think the intention with Daredevil was that it was not going to be connected to the Netflix stuff, but then they realized we WANT the Netflix stuff, so it ended up being a continuation instead of a reboot. Especially since it seems the whole Defenders crew is going to be appearing in Daredevil soon. BUT, the Netflix stuff was separated from the wider MCU (until now), so if anything, watch the Netflix stuff (which is on D+ now) and then D+ Daredevil first? But you would probably be fine without it.
61
chrisq823 Apr 9, 2026 +8
Its a Marvel product. You can figure it out pretty easily if you just watch it. If it seems cool watch the other stuff.
8
muhash14 Apr 11, 2026 +1
I've found that it never *really* matters too much how much homework you've done. Just watch a primer video or something if you really want to, otherwise you tend to figure out most of the background, or they will exposit it to you.
1
Sapowski_Casts_Quen Apr 9, 2026 +3
There's a lot of stuff you don't need to watch, they might do an easter egg or two like mentioning Valentina though
3
silvos777 Apr 9, 2026 +9
Is it a movie ? Or a series?
9
ImmortalMoron3 Apr 9, 2026 +86
Special Presentation. So it's just a one time thing like Werewolf by Night or the Guardians Christmas special were.
86
DukeNeverwinter Apr 9, 2026 +14
F I hope for more left field stuff like Werewolf by Night.
14
humboldt77 Apr 9, 2026 +6
Still holding out hope for Nova.
6
ArchDucky Apr 9, 2026 +2
It still bugs me that Marvel released a color version. The black and white was so much fun and made the film stand out. Plus Black and White has this way of making visual effects more realistic. Its exactly like what Werner Herzog said “They’re cowards”.
2
Adorable_Ad_3478 Apr 9, 2026 +38
It's a 60 to 90 minute film. Marvel calls them Special Presentation.
38
kuhpunkt Apr 9, 2026 +10
Might even be less than 60 minutes. Werewolf by Night and the GOTG Holiday Special were both Special Presentations and they were like 45-50 minutes.
10
Comic_Book_Reader Apr 9, 2026 +14
It's a TV special.
14
RealJohnGillman Apr 9, 2026 +6
Basically a television film: some fans were saying that they wished Marvel had elected to release it in cinemas, since a 90-minute *Punisher* film is absolutely something people would have gone to see in cinemas.
6
swicky Apr 9, 2026 +47
season 2, but yes.
47
Adorable_Ad_3478 Apr 9, 2026 +14
This might take place alongside DD S2, thus explaining Frank's absence.
14
Morgan-Moonscar Apr 9, 2026 +4
From the looks of things, by the end of S2 all hell is gonna break loose in NYC thanks to Fisk. And Frank's caught in the middle of the chaos while dealing with Ma Gnucci.
4

4

Dunno if that was the original plan, but I think it'll do that
6
TheCreativeComicFan Apr 9, 2026 +149
Oh sick. They’ve said that Ma Gnucci’s in this, right? If so then they might not be showing her in this trailer.
149
Ghetto_Phenom Apr 9, 2026 +45
She was in the first teaser actually (for like 1 second) but yeah shes the main antagonist I believe.
45
TheCreativeComicFan Apr 9, 2026 +9
Interesting. Do we know who’s playing her? Unless it’s being kept a secret.
9
Gato1980 Apr 9, 2026 +15
Nothing's confirmed, but Chloë Sevigny, Amanda Plummer, and Judith Light have all been rumored.
15
Rman823 Apr 9, 2026 +10
You can tell in the trailer that it’s Light
10
Gato1980 Apr 9, 2026 +2
Excellent, I was really hoping it was her. She'll be fantastic.
2
Rman823 Apr 9, 2026 +3
Definitely an actress I never would have expected to see in the MCU, but she’s great and I think will nail the role.
3
Mister_Buddy Apr 9, 2026 +5
So long as Tony lets her. Because we all know who the Boss really was.
5
HighMarshalSigismund Apr 9, 2026 +12
They're doing the Gnucci arc?! Ohhhh shit. Those polar bears look hungry.
12
Gato1980 Apr 9, 2026 +2

86

Agreed. This gives me hope it will be well done. Jon seems to have great respect for this character
49
ArchDucky Apr 9, 2026 +6
I heard when he heard what they had planned for him on 'Daredevil : Born Again' he refused to come back. Then when the great "We seriously fucked up" reshuffling happened, he came back. That scene of his with [Matt and Him talking about Foggy](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IOO4uJ7dMT8) is the best scene in the entire first season. Not a high bar because of how terrible it was, but that shit was goddamn fire. I honestly think it might have been improvised, it doesn't feel scripted.
6
Novel-Performer-4259 Apr 9, 2026 +44
I want to upvote you for your opinion about the scene but downvote you for saying Season 1 was terrible. Perfectly balanced.
44
RightRudderr Apr 9, 2026 +47
First season of Born Again was awesome you people are impossible to please
47
TheGraper58 Apr 9, 2026 +22
Right?! I think all things considered season 1 was pretty f****** great. They literally had to do a patch job, reshoot and rewrite half the season, and it still ended up being pretty good.
22
MikeArrow Apr 9, 2026 +3
Personally, I was very bored. It felt very performative and fake. I just didn't buy in to the story, tone or characters at all.
3
Somnambulist815 Apr 9, 2026 +4
That season has the best hand to hand fight scene in any superhero piece of media so that alone keeps it from being terrible, and that's not even mentioning the trial of white tiger episode
4
nudeldifudel Apr 9, 2026 +9
What was terrible?
9
Blacknite45 Apr 9, 2026 +245

Classic Frank Castle: Protector of young girls. And people still seem confused by the possibility he could be Jean Grey’s bodyguard in the upcoming Spider-Man movie. That’s been driving motivation for the entirety of Bernthal’s take on the character.
132
Working-Emotion-7803 Apr 9, 2026 +86

86
KaJaHa Apr 9, 2026 +25
Jean Grey is going to be in the next Spider-Man? Dang that's cool
25
NoDaddyNotTheBelt25 Apr 9, 2026 +19
It’s still speculation as Sony and Marvel are keeping it **very** under wraps. The only thing we know confirmed is her character knows Peter Parker is Spider-Man despite Dr Strange’s spell at the end of the last movie, that she will return in Secret Wars and she’s a redhead (obv). It all adds up as likely being Jean. Insiders say she is but absolutely nothing has been confirmed. Not even the leaked merch for the movie has her character anywhere.
19
SuperIdiot360 Apr 9, 2026 +31

I love Garth Ennis and agree, but they've built the character in the MCU in a way that I don't see how they could make all of it work.

>!It's One Last Kill on his revenge tour (the people responsible for his family's murder.) Not a retirement from vigilantism.!<

“I know you’ve killed a gajillion people who ere responsible for your family’s death, but these people are actually responsible.”

confusing_roundabout Apr 9, 2026 +26
This is why they need to do the Punisher MAX version of the character. It's a Frank Castle who is well aware that every single person remotely responsible for the death of his family are long dead. He's just in it for the love of the game.

Thor_pool Apr 9, 2026 +10
Thats like every version of the character. Its only really the MCU version who has killed the people responsible like...3 times now.

whendoesOpTicplay Apr 9, 2026 +6
Yeah wasn’t that Russo and the CIA guy?

Worthyness Apr 9, 2026 +8
there were gangs doing the actual shooting. He wiped most of them out. The Gnuccis seem to be on the last ones on the hit list

PhirebirdSunSon Apr 9, 2026 +5
I mean it's the Punisher, what the f*** do people want? This is like asking for deep introspection from a John Wick movie. Just let the man murder.
5
Revenacious Apr 10, 2026 +2
He’s done that like three goddamn times now.
2
HODOR00 Apr 9, 2026 +17
Kinda has to be if he's in brand new day though no?

Based on the subtitle, I can only assume this project is about Frank going to therapy and it being a really effective treatment for his PTSD and he stops killing people.
4
hugebone Apr 10, 2026 +4
He would have, but the therapist was involved in the killing of his family. Like pretty much everybody he ever crossed anywhere.

I am not convinced After watching the Trailer. I had high hopes but it‘s gonna be the third time we will see a punisher who really wants to stop punishing but oh no, the circumstances. And then he will wear his iconic outfit for the last 7-10 minutes. „You want more??? Please watch Spider-Man“.

SPorterBridges Apr 9, 2026 +8
This is exactly what the trailer makes it look like. It feels like they keep giving him that character arc because they're afraid of having him just be an unrepentant vigilante. Or they're overthinking moral dilemmas that don't have to be more complicated than those in a Jason Statham movie. Or maybe they just don't want to shell out for a series with kick ass action sequences.

Vincent_adultman98 Apr 9, 2026 +8
It doesn't look like he's done punishing, he's just fucked up cause of hallucinations. Not saying they won't go there, but nothing from this trailer really implies he's done punishing.

Ok-Shoulder1750 Apr 9, 2026 +2
I hope you are right but the official synopsis is „As Frank Castle searches for meaning beyond revenge, an unexpected force pulls him back into the fight.“…
2
purpledreign Apr 9, 2026 +3
What about it indicates he's done punishing? It's a continuation from where we last saw him in born again. He wasn't retired then and isn't now.
3
Unhappy-Ad9078 Apr 9, 2026 +3
The fact they're really digging in to just how heartbroken Frank is bodes well.
3
Devilofchaos108070 Apr 9, 2026 +3
Hell yeah that looks great!

oldmanjenkins51 Apr 9, 2026 +2
Prediction: the one last kill in question is his old self. His grief and ptsd ridden self.
2
Tonto151 Apr 9, 2026 +3
One Last Kill (before he joins the MCU proper and isn't allowed to)

I never watched Punisher season 2. I love the character and read the comics (currently in 1994 in my completionism read) but found season 1 really boring. Should I watch season 2? I want to see this.
14
Funmachine Apr 9, 2026 +32
It is by far a much worse season of the show. If you found season 1 boring you will find season 2 like pulling teeth l.

RealJohnGillman Apr 9, 2026 +7
u/ticketstubs1 I would say it is worth it however for adapting the Mennonite from *PunisherMAX* and giving him a happy ending: that is a character one always wanted to see get a happy ending.
7
ticketstubs1 Apr 9, 2026 +2
Haven't got to PunisherMAX yet.
2
RealJohnGillman Apr 9, 2026 +3
It’s good: set in its own ‘realistic’ continuity, largely about Frank taking on the Kingpin, Bullseye, and Elektra. Vanessa Fisk’s MCU characterisation was also largely taken from it.
3
Funmachine Apr 9, 2026 +2
But that was terrible writing. The guy killed a lot of innocent people and Frank just lets him go.
2
ticketstubs1 Apr 9, 2026 +3
Ok I didn't want spoilers even if I am asking if I should watch or not...I mean I am undecided.

thosearecoolbeans Apr 9, 2026 +15
Season 2 is two different plot lines stitched together very haphazardly. Basically a Frankensteins monster of two seasons in one. The episodes ping pong back and forth between the two arcs with very little cohesion, it's bizarre. It has some good Punisher action and the resolution to Billy Russo / Jigsaw's arc, but there's nothing in it that's essential to where Frank is at in the MCU now. Also, no Micro :(

SenorWeird Apr 9, 2026 +4
Wife and I rewatched all of the Netflix stuff and realized we somehow MISSED season 2 of Punisher. When we got to the end, I explained how Billy was Jigsaw and showed her some examples of the comics and she laughed and said "Man, if that's what Jigsaw is supposed to be, they really fucked up in the show."

spike021 Apr 9, 2026 +14
first season was good. second season was pretty bad, i couldn't even finish it. felt too tropey.

CavillOfRivia Apr 9, 2026 +6
Nope. Almost no character development on season 2. It was just Frank beign Frank and doing Frank things, if that. Watch S1 of born again to know how Frank ended up here and you can jump into this straight away.

ticketstubs1 Apr 9, 2026 +9
I've seen all of Daredevil. I really don't mind no character development. That's kind of what's fun about The Punisher. He is what he is.
9
dadvader Apr 9, 2026 +4
If you want to see him doing his thing then yeah watch Season 2. They get some budget bump so there are genuinely some great scene of Punisher delivering old-fashioned justice around. Just don't expect a good story out of this one. Genuinely worse than Daredevil Season 2. But better than Iron Fist Season 1. So make of that what you will.

ticketstubs1 Apr 9, 2026 +2
That's a very good metric to use! I see what you're saying. I only lasted two episodes of Iron First and then stopped.
2
the_great_ashby Apr 9, 2026 +2
It started with him again not being the Punisher, and again doing a bunch of shit out of character. DD S2 was the best Punisher we had,and he wasn't even the Punisher until the very end.
2
Devilofchaos108070 Apr 9, 2026 +3
I liked the Frank parts but the Billy parts less so. Overall it wasn’t bad
3
ZzzSleep Apr 10, 2026 +2
I'd say the two Punisher seasons aren't even essential viewing. You can get everything you need to know about the character by watching Daredevil. His own show is more like a bonus if you're interested.

oldmanjenkins51 Apr 9, 2026 +2
I can already tell the jump in cinematography quality from born again.

Nullhitter Apr 9, 2026 +2
THIS IS WHAT I'M TALKING ABOUT! THIS IS WHAT YOU PRODUCE FROM NOW ON DISNEY!

just hilarious seeing this with the Disney logo on it.

Ashamed_Fact832 Apr 9, 2026 +2
Still just has that disney stink i have seen peak punisher on netflix, anything else is less.
2
Upbeat_Tension_8077 Apr 9, 2026 +4
I'm liking how gritty this still feels, even if it'll be a little toned down from the Netflix series
