A month into Iran, the GOP’s political reality sinks in
Republicans in battleground states are largely sticking by the president's war — but they’re finding it harder to brush off the consequences.

For the first time in his life trump doesn't have someone around him to help pull out and so the whole world is fucked.
1
SweetChild1997 Mar 29, 2026 +1
Trump administration is probably the most incompetent administration in the history of the world.
1
Imaginaryreality5304 Mar 29, 2026 +1
I can’t wait to see future scholars analyze this period. The post-Trump/MAGA reality will really be something. I can’t even imagine the sheer scale of corruption that will inevitably be uncovered. Just look at everything we’re able to see openly happening in real time, imagine how much more we’re unaware of.

A pessimist is rarely disappointed If they are wrong, it is generally a good thing If they are right, at least they were expecting it

Imaginaryreality5304 Mar 29, 2026 +1
Yeah I tend to not engage with the catastrophizing narratives. The pendulum always swings back. The only unknown is how like that swing will take. But I’m incredibly optimistic after seeing the results of every recent special election. Coupled with the recent primaries in several red states. The turnout for democratic voters was record breaking in several of them. Also, for the first time in recent history, more Democrats turned out in the Texas primaries than Republican voters. That’s incredibly encouraging and noteworthy. It shows people ARE paying attention.
1
GreenWorldCaucus Mar 29, 2026 +1
I hope it swings so f****** hard! I literally need it, the hope that justice is served again, that Renee, Pretti, and all of the others who were killed and wronged by this administration. I only regret that those who voted for and still support this administration will escape the suffering they have caused.
1
XSinTrick6666 Mar 29, 2026 +1
I think the world can clearly see the MAGA vote flushed this country all the way down the toilet. But we have ignored too many red flags. We saw Trump once and didnt do anything to close up the rat-holes he got in through. We flouted international Rule of Law. The 'slippery slope' concepts appear to be too subtle for Americans. They have to see us - see their own predicament - literally sliding into a deep chit hole

Lostsailor73 Mar 29, 2026 +1
That population may switch, but it may not be enough...non-voters your time is now!
1
PigpenMcKernan Mar 29, 2026 +1
I keep having this argument with my old man and I really want to take yours (and his) side. The issue is that they are going to shove the SAVE act through and continue to ratfuck the midterms and the next presidential elections to whatever extent they are able. The Supreme Court is going to ignore Article 1 Sec 4 and say that in the interest of national security the Federal Government should administer elections. Or just make up a reason, that’s obviously not beyond them. Then what? Edit: the pendulum does swing. But I would prefer it swings in a meaningful way in my lifetime and that seems quite out of reach at the moment.
1
Arrasor Mar 29, 2026 +1
The pendulum does swing... until the cord is snapped.
1
No_Somewhere_7109 Mar 29, 2026 +1
They won't force the SAVE act through, at least. The Senate famously hates Trump and will *not* risk the filibuster's power for him. They rubber stamp certain things, sure, but if they touch the filibuster even once it loses every bit of power, forever.
1
ohanse Mar 29, 2026 +1
The issue is the pendulum always. Swings. Back. So this correction will be dramatic, but I’m shuddering about the reaction to that one when my kid is gonna be starting his own family.
1
ooo-ooo-oooyea Mar 29, 2026 +1
Texas should be interesting this year. The ICE stuff is pissing people off at the border, general shitty economy is pissing everyone off, and the situation at the airports is pissing off travelers. I'm sure Abbot will be quick to come up with a conspiracy on why this is democrats fault. I think the oil types will really like what's going on in Venezuela and Iran, but thats not a crowd that ever votes blue.
1
el3vader Mar 29, 2026 +1
A big reason why I voted Biden was Trump 2020 accountability. I really hope the next dem also has this as part of the platform. I don’t think we can get Trump because the Supreme Court has basically ruled anything that happens during a presidency is fine but if we want this to stop in the future we need to get everyone who was complicit in enabling this.
1
Ghepardo Mar 29, 2026 +1
Can’t even imagine what Trump’s presidential library will end up like. It’ll be a golden Parthenon full of his tweets on display.

The US will bury this part of history, like it buries other bad history. Needs a radical shift in thinking about history, which is not going to happen.
1
btone911 Mar 29, 2026 +1
I’m hoping for a cottage industry in Hollywood cranking out The Big Short level films explaining complex schemes employed by Trump, Bannon, Noem, Lewandowski, Nutlick, Junior and his dumber half, Kushner, Lake, Desantis, RFK Jr, Linda McMahon, and that 2018 4th of July trip to Russia.

I think in 100 years (if the planet hasn't exploded) people won't believe that Trump was real. They'll believe that detractors and opposition change the narrative about him. Because there's no way someone so stupid, gross and horrible could have been elected...twice. Like Caligula. Most modern historians think the stories we know about Caligula were written after his death to slander his memory. Largely because the stories seem so fantastical and insane. Anyway, for this reason I now believe the stories about Caligula were probably true.
1
[deleted] Mar 29, 2026 +1
They’ll also probably believe that these events didn’t happen, *at all*. Like how some people believe that Sandy Hook (and other tragedies) didn’t happen and that anybody involved is just a crisis actor. Despite the amount of evidence proving otherwise.
1
mowotlarx Mar 29, 2026 +1
Every day we have a new batshit crazy story about Trump. 90% of them won't be passed down to future generations and the few they did probably won't be believed. And never forget the Internet isn't an archive. It's mostly dead. Whatever hasn't been published or printed for archives will probably be lost and called into question with the current state of AI slop anyway.
1
Emotional-Channel-42 Mar 29, 2026 +1
In a 100 years unintelligent and awful people will still exist. Meaning conservatives will still exist. Meaning they’ll believe it was possible.

1

They're very competent at grifting. Even though this will destroy the US's diplomatic and military capacity for generations, and will negatively impact domestic matters for an unknowable amount of time, Trump's inner circle is getting even more filthy rich off of crypto, market manipulation, and prediction apps.

It’s incredible, really.  He’s faced no consequences for anything in his life. And he somehow managed to push his luck right up to the point that it’s his stupid pride and bravado against the stability of the world. I wouldn’t believe a tale so stupid but here I am forced to watch it.

Yea, but unlike declaring bankruptcy and then letting someone else handle the mess, there's no one that can just 'fix' this for him.
1
TheAskewOne Mar 29, 2026 +1
Also because Republicans have carefully removed anyone with knowledge of geopolitics from government. Promoting jesters over experts is funny, up to the point when reality catches up with you and you need someone who knows what they’re talking about. Senior civil servants were removed from agencies and  politicians with knowledge of important issues retired or got primaried by crazies with the blessings of the party leadership. This has been a decades long effort, it’s finally coming to fruition.

Trump didn't want to lose the midterms because of the Epstein files. So he attacked Iran. Now, he gets to lose the midterms because of Iran *and* the Epstein files. 4D chess while having the intellectual capacity of an 8 year old
1
tommytheturtleishere Mar 29, 2026 +1
While this is possible, yall are foolish to just assume this is going to play out this way. There is no world where they dont continue to throw shit against the wall between now and then to win those midterms. That may involve straight up cheating, starting new wars, or other insanity that we cant even think of. Id like to think they wont work but has anything in the past decade made you sure our systems and leaders are going to get us through this?
1
ObviouslyRealPerson Mar 29, 2026 +1
Oh, I'm definitely bracing for the chicanery. ...and if I am, I can't imagine others aren't either
1
steveu33 Mar 29, 2026 +1
They simply aren’t going to recognize results they don’t like. Midterms or any other elements of the rule of law can’t save us. It’s time for a general strike or a March on Washington.
1
BigPapaJava Mar 29, 2026 +1
And if Trump loses a “free and fair” midterm, he’ll use every tactic at his disposal to have those elections thrown out. The week after the election, I anticipate announcements that the Kash Patel FBI and Pam Bondi DOJ are working with the Markwayne Mullin DHS to investigate allegations the votes were somehow rigged by Democrats in places where Republicans lost seats. Then the SCOTUS will get to determine how Trump’s plan to throw those elections out or pick winners via EO until he gets the results he wants is perfectly constitutional because he’s the one doing it. The threat of possible Iranian-related terror attacks on U.S. soil between now and the election will give him a wide range of “National Security” justifications for cracking down on protests and “increased security” at polling places in November.
1
GreenWorldCaucus Mar 29, 2026 +1
He can't lose the midterms if we don't have midterms.
1
PolicyWonka Mar 29, 2026 +1
That’s why they want to pass the SAVE Act. Claim there isn’t enough time for everyone to get an ID and that we need to push the election back to give people more time. Comes off as a semi-reasonable thing despite being completely manufactured.
1
Kinda_Zeplike Mar 29, 2026 +1
I’d say that’s completely unreasonable though. If it passed and was implemented, the reasonable thing to do would be to implement it after a near upcoming election for the reason you stated. Implementing it before would be chaotic. But these aren’t matters being dished out by reasonable people anyways, as we know.

1

People on listnook love to say this but midterms aren't some magic thing Trump can wish away with an executive order. And I don't mean that as a "but that's illegal" comment, I mean there's literally no way he can cancel them. He can and will harrass, intimidate, continue to double down. There will be dirty tricks. Elections are not going to be cancelled. Don't comply in advance. Intimidation is largely all they have.
1
Staff_Senyou Mar 29, 2026 +1
Iran's AI slop propaganda is truly next level. You watch it and know it's wrong, but it's also not wrong. Trump et al make it really, really hard to even pretend the US is anything approaching a "good" guy in all of this
1

For a bunch of people who are rabidly anti-socialism, farmers never miss an opportunity to approach the government with their hat in hand.
1

Because anything they get from the government, they earned. Anything you or me gets from the government, it's because we're filthy leeches on society. Most of my family is conservative and this is how they think. That and they shouldn't have to pay taxes, but should get all the things that taxes pay for.

Major Major's father was a sober God-fearing man whose idea of a good joke was to lie about his age. He was a long-limbed farmer, a God-fearing, freedom-loving, law-abiding rugged individualist who held that federal aid to anyone but farmers was creeping socialism. He advocated thrift and hard work and disapproved of loose women who turned him down. His specialty was alfalfa, and he made a good thing out of not growing any. The government paid him well for every bushel of alfalfa he did not grow. The more alfalfa he did not grow, the more money the government gave him, and he spent every penny he didn't earn on new land to increase the amount of alfalfa he did not produce. Major Major's father worked without rest at not growing alfalfa. On long winter evenings he remained indoors and did not mend harness, and he sprang out of bed at the crack of noon every day just to make certain that the chores would not be done. He invested in land wisely and soon was not growing more alfalfa than any other man in the county. Neighbors sought him out for advice on all subjects, for he had made much money and was therefore wise. “As ye sow, so shall ye reap,” he counseled one and all, and everyone said, “Amen.”

“But for now, I think people are standing by the president.” That last line tells you everything you need to know about the GOP. Doesn't matter how hard it gets for anyone around them, or even themselves for that matter. They will continue to support him and put their hands out for more. I've always said...trump supporters are either very rich or very stupid. The rest of us, well, I guess we just don't matter.

Initially Trump said the U.S. Navy would be escorting ships through the Straits. Then Trump said the U.S. would cover the insurance for ships. At one point Trump just claimed victory and said the war was won and Iran was totally destroyed. Last week the claim was that a deal with Iran was imminent. Now the Administration is just complaining and antagonizing allied nations for help. The Administration treats everyone with disrespect and contempt. Trump often brags about his transparency yet when journalists ask him questions he doesn't like Trump offers up insults. Not answers. No one knows the true state of this war. We do not know if negotiations are ongoing, what the legitimate demands are, what Iran's current capabilities are, which strategic goals by the U.S have been accomplished, etc.

1
MaASInsomnia Mar 29, 2026 +1
Some of those statements are delusional. The economy was already unraveling thanks to the tarrifs. The Iran War has only sped up the unraveling and made it worse. We're not going to suddenly be doing great in November. Registered Republicans threatening Republican canvasers with calling the police is a REALLY bad sign for the GOP.
1
Terrible-Internal374 Mar 29, 2026 +1
I had the same thought while reading the article. These people are out of their minds. There is no world where inflation and/or interest rates drop while we’re at war in the Middle East, setting records with both the debt and deficit, and the tariffs are in place. Reporting by NPRs marketplace said that consumers have been largely insulated from the tariffs at this point as retailers have tried to keep prices stable. That is impossible in a world of $5+ diesel. The tariffs were going to be felt by consumers in the mid summer to early fall anyway, because that’s when all the pre-tariff contracts expire. The GOP is sitting on an economic time bomb of their own making and praying it doesn’t go off while hitting it with a hammer. By November the economy is going to be undeniably in a deep recession, and I believe entering a depression. Edit for clarity.

This is such a revolting comment on the American mind. Invade a sovereign country and murder thousands of innocent people to distract from a child sex trafficking ring and the only thing people are worried about is gas prices. America is truly disgusting and depraved.
1
NoKids__3Money Mar 29, 2026 +1
And Trump’s approval rating is somehow the same as it was a month ago. He unilaterally starts an illegal and offensive war in the Middle East without even explaining to the public why, without asking for congressional authorization, spiking gas prices 60%+ (so far) and he doesn’t even lose 1% support? Something’s not right
1
Terrible-Internal374 Mar 29, 2026 +1
Well… Gallup stopped presidential approval polling. Can’t imagine why?
1
Ziggylcd12365 Mar 29, 2026 +1
Authoritarian/conservatives have a floor of about 25/ 30%.  In a post fox news world I doubt he goes lower than 35
1
Davis51 Mar 29, 2026 +1
It's not actually the same. Check the graph of this aggregate here. https://fiftyplusone.news/polls/approval/president It seems that every time he causes some needless crisis, it spikes down and then normalizes. But it never normalizes as high as it did. And the downward spikes get worse each time. His lowest aggregated approval in his first term was around 34% at the height of COVID. Now, it's his biggest low in the second term. 37.8. This is anecdotal but the biggest increase in his approval rating was around December when it went from below 40 to above 40-41 again. To me, December was an extremely quiet news month. Nothing much happened. Them January comes along and it's barrage after barrage of the dumbest shit possible. 3 months in and he's losing a percentage point a month. Each of how demographics erodes a little bit at a time. Strong supporters become somewhat supporters and somewhat opposed becomes strongly opposed. All that translates to strongly opposed showing up in droves and somewhat supportive forgetting there was an election and staying home.
1

Trump denied knowledge of project 2025 instead pushing his Agenda 47. Now we’re half way through implementing Project 2025.

Trump should have learned by now that he either has to pull out or pay child support because this baby will be his.

To the non-voters...now is your time. Only you can save us!

I find it funny that they hold the line but have no reason to. In fact, they talk about how awful it is and worry about midterms. Thats their concern, losing power. Thats it.

It's an Apocalyptic death cult, they don't believe in the future.

This is why people should elect leaders who are qualified, educated, and of sound character. Thanks Americans! ( the ones who voted for him and the one who didn’t). You guys gave the world a cancer and initiated your own downfall.

Yeah…. But the HUGE supreme court seat loss will be felt for generations

While the GOP will likely fail we will all pay for it.

Trump really seems to want Iran to attack mainland US. I wod not put it past Trump to use a false flag attack to cancel the election.

AntifascistAlly Mar 29, 2026 +1
Iran has out thought MAGA at every step, although obviously their military is smaller. I wonder if they have enough restraint to wait until after the midterms—so they don’t inadvertently help Donald—and then focus on MAGA-friendly properties like Mar-a-Lago?

its cuz theyve literally never experienced repercussions for their actions before, but they got into a mess they cant easily bullshit their way out of this time (but a certain subset of voters will not care in the slightest)

The title of the article is deceiving because not one person interviewed says they’ll back away from Trump. It’s a cult. They’re locked in no matter if he chains their ankles and throws them to the bottom of the sea.

YEARS of war, YEARS. An orange war to distract from the Trump files.

Being stupid AND racist is toxic not just for MAGA but for the world.

Well, we now have a new bar against which to gauge a situation — WWIII. Thanks Carson City, Nevada GOP chair Susan Ruch. “I know prices are going to go up — but I do know this is short term compared to World War III.”

Scary if you think about how close we are actually to an accidental full blown nuclear war.  Putin and trump are both insane and stupid enough to turn on each other like two dogs fighting over a meal.

They can’t possibly think they will do well in the midterms?!? Are they litterally high on their own supply?

Future historians are going to have so much to write about. Like a president starting a war to regain popularity at home, only to see it backfire and blow up and do the opposite. In contrast, Bush's approval rating surged from 64% the week prior to the start of military action to 82% right after it, staying high throughout the war. Lol, but trump tries to follow a similar playbook and shoots himself in the foot,

Just wait until dem drop the ball for the 100th time. Look at how they’ll sell us to corporation, AIPAC and too donor class.

Always blame the democrats for not stopping republicans, but never blame republicans for doing republican things, right?

I think Trump has done something really amazing for the environment here, and we should all be grateful.
1
Zest724 Mar 29, 2026 +1
Can you please tell us what that is?
1
masturbathon Mar 29, 2026 +1
He's reduced natural gas consumption by at least 20%, and fuel usage by 10% in the short term. The increase in prices will probably driver further divestment from fossil fuels in the long term. Over the past few days i've seen numerous articles about the market for (new and used) electric cars increasing, people planting solar gardens, etc. One of the biggest problems with getting off fossil fuels was that they were c**** and in constant supply. Why buy an electric car when gas is $2.29/gallon? Well, Trump just gave the world an answer.

Zest724 Mar 29, 2026 +1
You do realize that he cancelled over $7.5 billion in Department of Energy grants for clean energy projects, like wind, solar, and grid upgrades. These cuts specifically targeted projects in states that did not vote for him in 2024.

masturbathon Mar 29, 2026 +1
I'm not speaking in defense of Trump at all. I think he's just so goddamn stupid he accidentally did something that might benefit the world. (And for the record, i think in the short term this is going to really suck for the US)
1
geomaster Mar 29, 2026 +1
donald is pushing for dropping sanctions on russian and iranian oil he's gutted renewable projects in US he's pushing for coal. he is not inadvertently doing anything positive for the environment next up, he's sending in troops in a land invasion so when you at it all you say hmm why would donald do this... it all makes sense when you realize he is a russian asset
