Why keep it hidden, we all know the effects

Because that would trigger a bunch of lawsuits that they dont want to have to deal with.

We knew about the horrible air quality in NY that same week of 9/11. People were sick immediately

"Christine Todd Whitman, the former EPA Administrator (2001–2003) and New Jersey Governor, issued premature, false assurances that the air was safe to breathe in Lower Manhattan after the 9/11 attacks. Her statements disregarded known risks, leading to health issues for thousands who trusted the government, for which she later offered a partial apology."

How does one give a partial apology?

"Former EPA Administrator Christine Todd Whitman issued a partial apology around the 15th anniversary of 9/11 (2016) for stating the air was safe, expressing regret that people are sick and dying, and acknowledging her role in those outcomes. However, she did not admit to lying, maintaining she acted on the best available information at the time."

Took her 15 years years to issue a PARTIAL apology...

Let's be fair, considering today's political climate, even a partial apology from a government official sets a very high bar!!

And according to Harding Memo, that's a lie on her end too.

I'm sorry you're sick, but I'm a moron with no common sense and you can't hold me accountable for that

It means she isnt truly sorry, only sorry for getting caught.

Let's not forget that she was taking directives from the Bush admin.

Major shocker, I know

They lied to the workers on the island where they dumped the debris, too.
5
Mountain-Weekend-554 Apr 1, 2026 +4
They must have known how toxic that debris was because they sure shipped it all off to be recycled in a hurry.

tabrizzi Apr 1, 2026 +1
I do remember that very well, but wasn't it the EPA (then headed by that former NJ governor) that said all was clean?

“This isn’t about money, it’s about getting answers.” But you can be sure that the next suit will be about money. Individuals who commit crimes should be held accountable for as long as they live. Cities and other governments are not individuals: they change over time and become a different entity. 2026 NYC is barely if at all responsible for the acts of 2001 NYC under Giuliani.

Cancer treatment is, unfortunately, not free.

I have no argument with doing the right thing by providing benefits like healthcare. My point was relating to punitive damages. No one should be getting rich off of this and NYC should not be ripped off. Let’s see where it goes.

While I do not generally trust city, state or national government, I kinda feel like NYC had it's hands full just after 9/11, and could be giving a pass for not doing everything you wish they would have done.

They flat out lied about the air quality post 9/11 attacked and now more people have died due to carcinogen exposure than the actual airplane attacks and tower collapses. People that knowingly give thousands of people cancer shouldn't get a "pass".

Ah... I was unaware of that. TY

Those people being the ones that flew into the tower? Yeah no one is giving them a pass.

The nyc officials that said the air was fine, when it was proven that it wasn't.

Reading the article it seems like some random official said everything is fine, get back to work.  And the air quality reports mysteriously vanished. Which yeah, bad. At the same time, if you honestly believed the air next to a demolished building is 'fine', I have a hard time sympathetizing.  We should be going after the official that said everything was fine. I remember even at the time thinking no f'ing way.

The whole situation became a federal case, so the EPA was in charge.
