A plain russet potato is very hard to eat

Posted by a_sad_lil_idiot

Has anybody here tried eating a plain baked russet? Consuming it feels similar to when you get to the end of a protein snack and chew for what feels like an eternity. it is just so bland with the taste of earth. idk, weed is funny.

Does anyone eat plain potatoes ever? You've gotta put some seasoning on it, it's not an apple

It is if you’re French

Nah man. If you are truly hungry a plain potato does have good flavour. It’s subtle, but slightly sweet. Honestly now I want a baked potato beside a baked onion.

No one would be over weight if we waited until our hunger got to the point that we would love a plain baked potato. I just solved the obesity crisis…

True!

A good potato like an ozette or yellow finn are delicious just boiled with nothing added. I always do season them of course but have no qualms eating them before I’ve even added salt

I absolutely love yellow potatoes! I was a little put off at first because of the color, but I am so glad I tried them because they are my new favorite vegetable with or without seasoning of any kind.

My first girlfriend would eat potatoes like an apple. She would just microwave them a bit and go to town.

You cooked it, right?

tryin_to_chill Mar 28, 2026 +6
Did you use butter or any kind of oil?
6
DrStalker Mar 28, 2026 +5
And a bit of salt. Food still counts as plain with a bit of salt, it's part of the cooking process.

tryin_to_chill Mar 28, 2026 -2
I don't use a whole lot of salt. I try to avoid it actually.

nicoisnotarobot Mar 28, 2026 -6
I’d rather eat it raw if it’s plain

Stankmonger Mar 28, 2026 +7
No you wouldn’t. You’d get stomach pain.

A little butter and salt would long way in the taste dept.

I eat a lot of baked potatoes, they aren't amazing but they're good value for the price (I swear they're cheaper than the dirt they're grown in, lol). Gotta have toppings though. I think my favorite combo I've tried so far is cream cheese and barbecue sauce. Although chili/cheese is a classic that's hard to beat.

MojoDuff27 Mar 28, 2026 +3
I'd love to eat more (and try cream cheese & bbq) but I live in the south and heating up my oven for a potato would make my kitchen so hot. The microwave cooked ones never come out for me. Maybe I'm doing it wrong.

ani3D Mar 28, 2026 +3
I always go microwave. The trick is to wrap it in cloth to keep the moisture in, flip it after about 3 minutes, and cook it until it looks just slightly wrinkly. Okay that's three tricks.

MojoDuff27 Mar 28, 2026 +1
My husband stabs them and wraps in wet paper towel and cooks for 10 min and it's either raw or hard as a brick. He never flips. Maybe flipping is the answer!

this is so funny because a plain baked russet potato is unironically one of my favorite meals lol

Anagoth9 Mar 28, 2026 +4
Which was more baked? The potato or you?

Trash-Left1 Mar 28, 2026 +3
Butter, cheese, sour cream. Any and all. Pretty much any kind of fat helps. Baking them unwrapped gets a crispy skin instead of wrapped which I find to be tougher and chewier.
3
kevnmartin Mar 28, 2026 +6
I love the crispy skins. I treat them like a roll.

strumthebuilding Mar 28, 2026 +3
A cooked russet sans butter and salt is not ideal, but I think it’s totally edible. I think it probably tastes better if you let it cool down, counterintuitively.

GlitterRiot Mar 28, 2026 +3
You will find me on a hike eating a lightly salted baked potato out of a foil pocket. I'm allergic to bananas so I always come prepared with potatoes.

Sea-Bedroom5836 Mar 28, 2026 +2
bro, a plain baked russet is definitely an acquired taste, it's like you gotta load it up with toppings to make it decent. but yeah, pretty wild how something so basic can feel like a chore to eat.
2
DaveinOakland Mar 28, 2026 +2
Baked potato is probably my least favorite way to eat a potato tbh. It is truly the f*** it lowest effort Im just hungry way to eat it and it usually requires covering it in other shit to make it taste ok.
2
PrateTrain Mar 28, 2026 +2
Plain anything tastes bad. So many flavors won't show up on our tongues without salts or fats present.

Same-Drag-9160 Mar 28, 2026 +1
I agree, I feel like half is a good size but a whole one feels a bit too much. Although it’s no match for how hard Greek yogurt feels to eat. The first half? Amazing, after that it’s a struggle and feels like a chore

JustAnotherDay1977 Mar 28, 2026 +1
I’ve had plain baked russets. It kinda reminded me of eating plain white rice - not great, but not bad. I never got an “earthy” taste though. Maybe you didn’t rinse the skin first?
1
LabernumMount Mar 28, 2026 +1
Potatoes are one of the most blank canvases of the culinary world. You are totally right, a plain potato is not tasty at all. But the minute you add even just salt, BOOM. Delicious !! What a funny thought you had. I’ve never thought about it before. You made me chuckle!!
1
Low_Recommendation85 Mar 28, 2026 +1
Rinse. Put in air fryer. Salt. Cook at 400 for 50-55 minutes depending on the size of the potato. Remove. Split open however you prefer. Add butter/margarine. Enjoy.

Eden_Company Mar 28, 2026 +1
I eat plain cooked potatoes sometime. But usually it’s a side dish.

Roseallnut Mar 28, 2026 +1
Scrub it to get part of the jacket off, rub some salt on it, put it in the air fryer or microwave for five minutes, and then serve it with sour cream and butter. Problem solved.

tryin_to_chill Mar 28, 2026 +1
Or are you talking about biting that thing like an apple
1
Bulky_Poetry3884 Mar 28, 2026 +1
Needs toppings.
1
Olderbutnotdead619 Mar 28, 2026 +1
No. I love them boiled. I'll eat that sucker like an apple. Best with a bit of salt n pepper, but good without. I leave on the skin.

Adventurous_Bit1325 Mar 28, 2026 +1
I’m high as well, and the post immediately got me thinking about that Russet I have. However I am also thinking about butter and shredded cheese. Some pepper of course. That would be an experience worth seeking.

I hear 🎶 potatoes and molasses 🎶 is a good combo

ComfortableCall3912 Mar 28, 2026 +1
Some folks use a bit of butter. On the inside of the potato, mind you. The real fancy folks add sour cream and finely chopped chives. Freshly ground pepper and a dash of salt if you happen to have those specialty items in the pantry. Go really wild by scooping the lovely things out of their skins, making them with some combination of full cream, grated cheese, fried onion and garlic, rosemary; return the mash to the skins and broil them until the edges are browned. Cooking is more than just heating things up, hm?

This is why I peel and slice mine with a serrated knife into thin pieces and cook in vinegar water for 10 mins then shallow fry in ghee. Tastes exactly like McDonalds but not poisonous.

davga Mar 28, 2026 +1
It’s even worse when it’s two dry
1
continuousBaBa Mar 28, 2026 +1
Yeah, you gotta drench those babies in tons of fat to make it good. I was trying to save calories and topped a plain russet with sauerkraut and it was a strange awful experience of being dried out like a cartoon character
1
Aggravating-Yak7747 Mar 28, 2026 +1
Is it cooked?😂✌️

Plastic_Grab6710 Mar 28, 2026 +1
e out here eating the canvas
1
DemonSlyr007 Mar 28, 2026 +1
If it tastes like earth, you didnt clean it enough. I love plain baked potatoes with no salt or seasoning. But you have to wash it dude.
1
2ded4u Mar 28, 2026 +1
I feel like potatoes are just a blank canvas on their own they’re kinda meh, but add literally anything and they’re amazing.
1
bareka Mar 28, 2026
honestly a plain potato is like the driest food on earth lol. you gotta at least add some butter or salt or it's basically just eating dirt.
0
ProfoundRedPanda Mar 28, 2026
They're way more earthier, not for everyone.
0
wo_no_diggity_doubt Mar 28, 2026
Yea, not dissimilar to eating a tub of vanilla ice cream. Add something else to it otherwise it's just a saliva building task.
0
East-Garden-4557 Mar 28, 2026 +3
You must eat crappy quality vanilla icecream then. Proper vanilla is a standalone flavour, unless you are eating the nastiest fake flavoured iced confection junk
3
Ariandrin Mar 28, 2026
I think the difference here is vanilla vs vanilla bean. Vanilla is boring and plain AF. Vanilla bean is tasty and good.
