A reflection on AI from children's story book

Posted by concensure

I am not an avid reader, and since I graduated from uni, everyday seems more hectic than the day before. In a way we have made our life more efficient at the cost of quality. The only time now that I get to finish a book is when I bring my baby to the library to tell the baby about stories. Authors have put in lots of thoughts behind such simple stories that unless we learn about it, it's hard to fathom. With the advent of AI, it is quite a chance for people to create storybooks whose characters and central theme mimic each parent's ideal projection of what stories should be about. We never lack ideas, what we lack is means to express that idea. AI is that tool that tears down such barrier and let people's imagination run wild. We are given the freedom never before to tell our own stories. Then there comes the next question -- what exactly should we tell? The abundance of ideas suddently become a negative. Should the central character be a wombat or an eagle? Should the journey be full of surprises or delineate the struggle of the hero? Faced with a blank paper, the feeling of obligation to tell a convincing story suddenly flooded my heart. AI is not good at creative work. The stories told by AI is often too stale, too lack of depth, too incoherent, and too devoid of human spirit. We are meant to be the heralding creature of the AI era, to live a life less bounded by the day to day and more in touch with what we left behind as a kid.

AI is making creation easier and innovative, but choosing what to create is still on us 🤔

It's not good at it, though. Like if people have the ideas but lack the means to express them, maybe they also just lack the ability to detect good writing. Which really matters in children's books, good writing makes them fall in love with reading and helps them play with language and abstract concepts.
