“The maternal-fetal physician said she could go out of state to get an abortion, she could wait until she was in mortal danger or she could wait until Titus died – only then could she access the care she needed in Tennessee.” They drove through three states to get the abortion in Illinois. Stayed in a hotel to recover. Could presumably take time off work to do this and had childcare taken care of for their other children. When this happens to women who are poor, they die.

I’m hoping on the other side of the Trump admin, folks will be held accountable, including the Supreme Court, and their decisions completely disregarding precedence will be voided. This shit is absolutely abhorrent. We don’t live in the stone ages anymore and we aren’t a god damn theocracy.

People have been hoping those in power making these decisions would be held accountable since the 1700's. It has never happened and it ain't about to start.

Demands for Cheney to face accountability still echo in my mind
25
The_Grungeican 10 hr ago +21
Cheney was never going to face accountability. he shot a lawyer in the face, and then the lawyer went on TV to apologize for getting in the way. in a similar fashion, there's no doubt in my mind that Trump will never face any sort of consequences for his actions. his whole life, he's got away with stuff. the other people... they're not Trump. so long as the Democrats don't back down like they did last time, we might see some real chance that people spend time in jail for the things they're doing now.

I'm already fully prepared for more decorum and going high tactics if all these midterm fantasies play out.

Not in the US. France, on the other hand...

NightchadeBackAgain 10 hr ago +14
History proves that the only time those in power are held accountable, it's always by the populace at large. In other words, they won't be until we force them to be.

EnvironmentalRock827 9 hr ago +7
This is why the old dems need to go. Jefferies said going after trump wasn't a priority after the midterms. Seriously! People want him held accountable... if they are gonna not listen then they should be voted out.

Pardons and rulings from this admin need to be n***** 100%. If we let people get away with shit because of a pedo pardon then we’re never fixing this shit

Going to lenient on the traitor confederates lead to this. No leniency this time, otherwise if the nation survives this, it will come back with a force.

JimboTCB 11 hr ago +8
But at least it was good for national unity, right? *checks notes* Oh, no...

Lenient is an understatement. Many stayed in political office after the war ended.

> I’m hoping on the other side of the Trump admin, folks will be held accountable Trump tried to have his followers violently overturn the election and Biden proceeded to do absolutely nothing. Not a single person from the current administration will face any kind of consequences, even if a democrat wins in 2028.

We have not held anyone accountable since Nixon. It’s why we’re where we are: they know they’ll get away with it.

Sorry to say but the next big battle conservatives are taking aim at is the lowest level of teen pregnancy to date. They do want us back in the stone ages.

And yet you'll get men arguing "a road trip is cheaper than a child". Yes you idiot, but if you can't afford the road trip, how exactly is that relevant???

While I’m right there with you in being outraged, people should know (and share) that there are abortion funds all over the country who work to connect desperate people with the help they need getting transportation, medical fees, and other costs covered. [NAF](https://nationalabortionfederation.org/) and [ineedana](https://www.ineedana.com/) are both legit sources for info and help.

When this happens to rich women without notice or time to decide, they can die too! Instead of being able to get timeous medical assistance, you get a group of doctors/professionals weighing your life against being charged with some BS murder/malpractice shit for saving you.

How near death does a woman have to be to be allowed to get the health care to save her life?  10% dead?  50% dead?  90%?  A big problem is lawyers are making the decision, not patients working with doctors.

KimJongFunk 13 hr ago +133
The exact words used in the article are “mortal danger,” so pretty damn close.

Low_Pickle_112 11 hr ago +54
It reminds me of the old witch trials logic. You know, throw her in the river and if she floats she must be a witch so burn her, and if she sinks and dies, than oh well. This looks like the same basic stuff. If she has an abortion, arrest her because it hadn't killed her yet, and if she doesn't have one and dies, than oh well.

Which in many cases is too late to help

Close enough that they might pass anyway, as we know from the senseless and unnecessary death of Savita Halappanavar. That is because the statures hew as close as they can to a complete ban, and for their own safety (mostly legal but sometimes personal) physicians will try to be well clear of that bar… unless of course they leave the area entirely…

Electrical-Bee-7362 12 hr ago +26
The issue is that if a woman survives and then gets sued, it's up to the courts to decide if the danger was mortal or not. A bit like a witch trial, if you throw her in the water and she drowns she wasn't a witch after all... Too bad she died to prove it...

Since a lot of these states are burying the real death tolls just like they were for their dumbass covid policies, we may never know the true death tolls of these archaic, backwards ass laws.

Tennessee is the worst state I’ve lived in. People were shit, roads were shit, food was shit. Only redeemable quality is the nature in east tenn. other than that? Shithole.

I used to visit Nashville and the suburbs a lot. A few years ago I had some people suggest that it would be a good place to move and look for a new job because it was more affordable than the west coast and it's fun with a lot of things to do, and I just laughed and said as a queer there was absolutely no way I'd ever move there because of how hostile the laws were towards the LGBTQ and women. I liked to visit but I would never ever live there. I was told that I was overreacting. Did I mention that was only a few years ago? The way things are happening now, I've decided to never visit again. When I have the expendable cash I'll go somewhere else that treats all people with respect.

When pregnancy tests are required before any surgery - including a hysterectomy - or even something like chemo, and a positive result will prevent the living, breathing, thinking human being from even being offered life-saving care, there's something incredibly wrong. Hell, I've had a hysterectomy and still got asked to provide a urine sample for a pregnancy test before a more recent surgery

I work at a hospital, youd be shocked how many people think they have organs they dont have anymore or dont have organs that they do. Thats why they check
16
MrsKittenHeel 12 hr ago +10
As in people think they've had a hysterectomy, but haven't?

retirednightshift 12 hr ago +22
Had a male patient tell me he had a hysterectomy, turns out it was a hemorrhoidectomy.
22
Goldenrah 8 hr ago +1
That's an argument in favor of a national health system. An hospital can have access to the patient's records, and they don't have to ask the patient.

palcatraz 8 hr ago +1
The thing is, you can still get pregnant after a hysterectomy, if the ovaries are still left in place. It’s very rare and very dangerous because it always leads to an ectopic pregnancy, but it is still possible.  Well that and people just… lie. Or are mistaken about their own medical history. Doing the test as a standard is so much easier than trying to figure out  who is and isn’t being truthful.

The US has become way too unfriendly, actually antagonistic, towards women (who are not in power of politics or wealth) that it's mind-boggling.
43
AHugeHildaFan 12 hr ago +23
It's always been that way. Women were literally not considered citizens when the US started. To be considered one you had to be able to vote and own property. Women had neither
23
SuperPoodie92477 11 hr ago +10
We’re not really considered citizens now, either.

Sex objects, incubators and grandmas. Aka the maiden, the mother and the crone. It’s always been this way and I f****** hate it.

I remember hearing that wanting to permanently leaving their home country and never come back in hopes of getting a better life somewhere else polled higher for women aged 18-35 in the US than people in sub-Sahara African countries. Which makes sense when you consider the overall access to healthcare is roughly the same, but I suspect it feels a lot worse to have doctors who very much can help you shrug and refuse to help you in particular (medieval laws or denied insurance, pick your reason) than having no hospital to go to at all for anyone.

Nodan_Turtle 9 hr ago +5
And tens of millions of women will vote against their own self-interests. It's insane.
