Advice on splitting a movie in multiple parts

Posted by edwinhai

My fiancé struggles with concentrating on longer movies. So we often tend to avoid longer movies, but a lot of highly rated movies that I am interested in are pretty long. So I want to split longer movies into 2 parts. So we can watch it on seperate nights. But I also kind of what to do this at the best possible moment. Which is difficult in a movie that I do not know. I asked chatGPT if it knew anything and it just gave me the rough advice of doing it around the 60% mark due to "usually" the mid point conflict being resolved at this point. But I can't help but feel like there is a better way, like isn't there a site or something with this specific request? it doesn't seem that rare? Or does anyone have another other advice on splitting movies? We are currently wanting to watch One Battle After Another tonight and tomorrow.

I don't really know how to take this. I also sometimes continue watching a movie another day, not really because I can't concentrate but because I might be too tired or having other things to do. I can pick up at any point as long as I don't wait too long. However in your situation you seem to want to watch a movie and have her watch too, she might just not like the movie you picked or maybe she just isn't too much into movies. If there is a movie you really like and it's long have a go at it on your own. When you have to watch something together let her pick or you both choose something, preferably of shorter duration.

I get where you're coming from, but its for a big part due to ADD. We generally compose a list of movies together we want to watch and then shes always the person who picks which movie we actually watch on that day.

We do this all the time with my fantasy league crew when we're marathoning lord of the rings - usually pause right after a big emotional beat or when theres a natural transition between locations/time jumps rather than hitting some arbitrary percentage mark

I have been considering watching LOTR like this too with my fiancé, which is pretty easy because I know those movies by heart. But its more difficult if you don't know the movie.

If you can recognize 3 act structure then most movies can be read for a stopping point at the end of act 2.

I don’t think there is one specific answer to what you’re asking due to a variety of factors like movie length, genre, attention span, time of day, etc. Your best bet is to probably look up the runtime of the movie you’re interested in, figure out when roughly 50-60% of the way through is, and aim to stop somewhere around then at a natural low point in the story. For instance, stop after a big action sequence, an heavy emotional moment, or a major plot point is revealed. That way you immediately have something to talk about and be excited to come back to, and it’s easy to remember where you left off because the “can you believe the protagonist just…” Or just figure out when they tend to check out. Is it always around the 45 minute mark? Then it looks like that’s the answer. If it varies based on how engaged they are, maybe they just need more interaction with the narrative. The idea of talking about the movie after you break for the night might help them. Some people just don’t follow plots as easily as others and need some space to ask questions or theorize without being dammed about their curiosity.

We usually do a quick drink and snacks break at around 45-60 minute mark and do exactly this. Its really around the 2 and a half hour mark where we need a serious break and continue on another day.

Ye I know about this one and felt like a similar site that tells people when to split movies, would be an obvious thing to be made.

This sounds like a case of TikTok brain. There's sadly no cure. Movies are meant to be experienced in one sitting, like a well-prepared meal. If she can't sitthrough a 2 hour film that's a problem. I get it if it's 3 or 4 hours, but overall most movies should be a one sitting ordeal.

Most 2 hour films are okay, its once we go towards 2,5+ where it becomes a problem.
