They have the technology, take out the ATC towers at the airports and this war will become much more real and pressing for the normal Russian citizen when air transportation is shut down.

Exactly. Remove the ability flee, and the war becomes much, much more real in the eyes of Russian citizens. Not there yet, but even pushing that eventuality upon Russian minds in Petersburg and Moscow will do psychological damage. Hit the ports, hit the refineries, hit the bridges, hit the control towers, hit rail tracks in remote, geologically difficult areas to repair. Continue to not hit schools, universities, hospitals, etc. After all, it is only the stronger party that can afford mercy.

Honestly there are some very important rail hubs completely in range of even moderate drones Ukriane had launched. Theres a huge depot that pretty much supplies two main fronts and the only alternative is to go through Crimea. I wish they pounded the trains at that rail depot relentlessly. I know tracks are easy enough to replace, but locomotives and complicated switching stations and all the equipment to maintain the trains. I just feel like repeated strikes there would tap out available locomotion in weeks (exaggeration - but you can't build new trains that fast). Voronezh - just wreck it

Good point

I'm honestly surprised that Ukraine hasn't already hit rail lines to the point that they wouldnt be able to get supplies moved across the country. Hit the hub, then hit it again and again as they try to repair it. The reality is only by bringing the economic pain to Moscow will the people of Russia ever stand a chance to open their eyes.

Rail infrastructure is what is called a 'hard' target. It takes more than a small drone to damage rails and even the worst damage can be repaired in an hour or two. Neither Ukraine or Russia are targeting rail as a priority as it's just not worth it when there are better targets. Ukraine does target fuel cars when they can but the rail itself will survive such attacks with at worst minor damage.

Id think they would want to find a way to hit those targets especially because of how reliant Russia is on them. But even so, if you damage a hub in the right ways, it will take far more than an hour or two to repair. Hit the rails, sure, quick fix. Hit those things that turns the loco's around, and suddenly theyre gonna have a much longer time, at which point you hit it mid repair, and again, and again, until they fority defense to the point it cant be hit, meaning that other areas are now weakened, or they give up.

This would come down to a blockade or not? Dunno if we should f*** up Chinas main trade routes. Otherwise i would agree with you, but eew, seems risky.

I disagree completely! We need to let them keep flying, as much as possible, these planes have no parts, no certified maintenance, the brakes are expired, everything is gone. It’s basically the old Aeroflot all over again, you take your life in your hands when you fly, I think that level of fear is fitting for invaders.

My suspicion is that the initial shortages have been fixed by North Korean or Chinese parts entering their inventory. Yes, with enough parts of dubious quality something is going to fail somewhere. But if they aren't falling out of the sky by this point it probably means the situation is handled. And it is time to escalate to put pressure on Russian leaders.

NK parts won’t help, that would make it much worse. I agree Chinese parts are involved, but it doesn’t matter, airliners are very hard to keep in the air.

Air is the easy part. Landing and take off are the most important parts of a flight and are affect the most by a loss of control towers.

GravitasFailures 3 days ago
Yes, but if they’re stuck on the ground they’re actually safe. Better to have them keep taking off and landing, let probability take its course.

Yikes, man. Like, sure, I say this from the comfort of my chair and am not involved in this war, but the context of this is civilian people on commercial airplanes...like maybe people returning from visiting family or something like that. If the context is in using foreign parts for military aircraft, then yeah, I'm completely with you

I know, it’s horrible to think that innocent civilians, minding their own business, doing literally nothing hostile, could be hurt or killed because of an evil regime…

Its so frustrating. I tried using stronger language but I found myself starting to rant so I'll just leave it at that. The common people around the world are suffering at the hands of the powerful.

Here’s the thing: I worked with a bunch of Russians, and I worked with a bunch of Ukrainians. The Russians, at first were unsure, but then were 100% onboard with the war, it was necessary to put Ukraine in its place as a part of Greater Russia, and it was Ukraine’s fault for betraying Russia by talking to the west, so they deserved what they got and much more. And this isn’t a rare belief, this is generally mainstream for them.

a grounded air fleet is likely faster deteriorating then a flying fleet. Why? Because seals get dry, lubricants settle, moisture creeps into corrosion, tires deform, hydraulic systems become sticky, and electronics degrade exposed to humidity. Long-term 'mothballing' is particular difficult in very cold climate with sharper temperature amplitudes. Contrary a flying fleet has vibration exposure, landing cycle wear, airframe stress, engine fatigue, all fluids circulate and problems get discovered early. Depending on russias servicing quality one of the both is more damaging. So it might be that short flying, then very long standing and short flying again does the most damage, ideally with bad service.

That'd be nice, but they and their private jets are unaffected by civilian airports being shut down.

TheTrollerOfTrolls 3 days ago +21
Private jets still need air traffic control, but this didn't affect Moscow so it doesn't matter.

Good one. Maximum bang for the buck with minimum payout. Knock out ATC and you shut down the entire airport. Great way to spread inconvenience to Russian people and remind them that war is getting closer to them.

>As a result, airports in southern Russia halted operations, including in the cities of Astrakhan, Vladikavkaz, Volgograd, Gelendzhik, Grozny, Krasnodar, Makhachkala, Magas, Mineralnye Vody, Nalchik, Sochi, Stavropol and Elista. Lovely. I do enjoy the Ukrainians hitting Infrastructure precisely, both hindering Russian logistics and showing that Russia is not untouchable. Propaganda can do a lot, but the mighty Bear won't fly you out.

L_Cranston_Shadow 3 days ago +2
Good. Mixed use and large government targets are absolutely fair game at this point, even ones that serve civilians. Russia hasn't been afraid to take out energy infrastructure and attack civilians, so if Ukraine has to start droning grocery stores than they are justified IMHO.

This shit is great for Ukraine, but it bodes unwell for WW3–constant tense standoff between nuclear powers while drones constantly bang into everything we need to live

More of an inconvenience to them. I’d take inconvenience over having children bombed in kindergartens like Russia does regularly

HOT-SAUCE-JUNKIE 3 days ago -19
I mean, I wholeheartedly agree with the second half of your statement. But what does f****** with civilian airports do to help the war effort? My gut tells me that the average Russian citizen hates Putin, hates this war, and just wants to go on living the best life they can live.

abelthebirds0 3 days ago +13
problem is these aren't 100% civilian airports, they're also used for transporting Russian troops and supplies. Also if you are a Ukrainian and Russia is targeting your power grid and stealing your land, you really don't give a f*** anymore.

HOT-SAUCE-JUNKIE 3 days ago -2
That is fair.

Oh, so they should not be inconvenienced by the aggression war their country is waging against Ukrainian civilians? Bombs on schools, hospitals, homes, war crimes and all are OK as long as russians can take a plane undisturbed?
