Alberta independence activists are embroiled in voter data scandal
The fact separatist activists had the list of electors has caused a political furor in Canada, and it has raised questions around privacy ahead of a potential vote on independence.

“An activist group called the Centurion Project is accused of unauthorized possession of Alberta’s list of electors, which contains names, addresses and other personal information of voters. The dataset comprises about three-fifths of the province’s population, according to Elections Alberta.” “That agency believes the Centurion Project obtained the data from the Republican Party of Alberta — a minor political party that supports Alberta’s secession from Canada. Investigators have started a probe in response to concerns about "potential misuse” of the voter list, according to the Royal Canadian Mounted Police.” And these guys also went to the White House 3 times to guarantee a 1 billion USD loan if Alberta separates….

>1 billion USD loan if Alberta separates…. Pretty sure it is 500 million. On top of that they keep saying it is a 500 billion loan.

Haha oh man that is too funny. I hope someone ends up in jail for this

ChrisFromIT May 6, 2026 +20
I hope so too, as a former Albertan. Sadly it doesn't look like it will happen. As it looks like the UCP still has about 60-65% support in Alberta, which is crazy considering all the scandals.

It's okay. Trump promised them a pardon!

cinyar May 6, 2026 +14
It's a Trump promise so it's actually more like $0.

mandalorian_guy May 6, 2026 +3
Both of those numbers are hilarious in opposite directions. 500 million is a laughably small loan for a state/territory like Alberta and 500 billion is just an insane amount.

ChrisFromIT May 6, 2026 +2
500 billion might cover 5 years worth of provincial budget spending, might cover 2-3 years of funding if Alberta acted like an independent country. 500 million might cover 2 weeks of funding for education in Alberta.

They aren't even a real party, they are a scapegoat for the UCP to dump blame on if when they get caught doing shit like this. If anything, they are a distraction for people not familiar with Alberta's politics.

The amazing thing is, Elections Alberta has a hidden security feature in every voter roll list that they give out. Each list and access to that list is salted with fake names and addresses. Every set of voter lists given out has different fake names salted in. So they know exactly who in the UCP gave the list to the whack jobs at the Alberta Republican Party.

The Alberta Republican Party had access to the data directly from Elections Alberta the same as any other registered political party would have. The fingerprinting you're talking about is what showed that the list being used by the *Centurion Project*, which isn't a registered political party with access to this data, got it from the Alberta Republican Party. The UCP passed a law that made it impossible for Elections Alberta to act on tips about the data breach until someone handed them a complete investigation.

Like, how would Alberta survive as an independent nation? It does even make any damn sense.

PartyWithSlurmz May 6, 2026 +6
Same old story, they have oil. What the Albertians don't seem to understand is the regular people will not benefit at all. This whole operation is Brexit 2.0 and the people will regret it just like Brexit.

td192020 May 6, 2026 +5
Only in their imagination. I honestly don’t understand why they think it’s possible. If anything Quebec separation makes more logical sense than Alberta separating. At least they have a unique culture and history. Alberta just wants less “liberal woke nonsense” and more “freedom.” It’s all being fuelled by misinformation and foreign political interference. It’s the ultimate grift

It’s also not a thing. No one in Alberta wants to leave. Whenever you see this stuff just point out that support for the idea is fringe at best. There was a story today linking US and Russian misinformation campaigns in Alberta losing the narrative.

It f****** sucks here right now. Our government is full of lunatics and their followers are too brainwashed and power hungry. The level of corruption is brutal.

I’m in Ontario myself. It’s not much better over here with Ford in charge. I hate it.

I dunno man.. Smith's track record is one disaster after another. She hasn't been able to hold a job because she gets fired for being crazy.

Ford just bought a 30m plane to distract from the fact he got rid of FOI requests.
11
Nextasy May 6, 2026 +9
And he got rid of FOI requests to hide his internal communications about selling protected lands to developers

All while also cutting funding for college and university students, and instead giving that funding directly to the universities for the executives to line their pockets with. My university just announced they’re cutting support staff along with 20-30 janitorial and maintenance positions all while the president gets another annual $60k increase. We used to have like 7 vice presidents 15 years ago, we now have like 16 VP’s making minimum $250k, all while the total student enrolment has only increased by a few hundred, in 15 years…

Ford is a corrupt dipshit, but he's not stupid enough to be treasonous. Marlaina however, is exactly stupid enough for that.

SillyGoatGruff May 6, 2026 +7
Ford is a corrupt shitbag, but at least he is regular corrupt and not "join the US" corrupt

Brexit 2.0, it will be regretted just like the original.

These TACO wannabes better check the state of treaties with aboriginal groups in Alberta before they talk about independence for land that doesn't belong to them.
14
Linooney May 6, 2026 +11
That doesn't work because, like Trump, they don't understand petty things like rules or agreements, those are for suckers to follow.

BenTramer 5 days ago +1
They understand, they just don’t care.

Rennarjen May 6, 2026 +7
They haven't cared about the law yet, why start now?

silicondali May 6, 2026 +3
We have other guardrails written into the Constitution Act, but it would be funny as hell if Alberta somehow gets to the point of separation and winds up reinstating the Royal Proclamation of 1763. I'm stuck in this clown show and I'm still dumbfounded how Danielle Smith of all people manages to have this magnetic hold on the scummiest creeps and bums you can imagine.

Rennarjen May 6, 2026 +2
She's conservative.  They'd vote for a gas station hotdog if it was UCP.
2
Locoman7 May 6, 2026 +22
Stop calling them “independence activists” and call them what they are, treasonous agents.
22
sharp11flat13 May 6, 2026 +6
Yes. That alone makes Alberta separation a non-starter.

Yall need to fix that shit before it gets out of hand

Imagine if Alberta's independence succeeded but the US never let it join the union. It'd be one of the biggest f*** ups in human history on Alberta's part

Wouldn't be the first time for Trump to just randomly abandon his rightwing buddies.

I don’t know what these agitators think they are doing, but it’s certainly not for the greater good.

Living in Canada (Ont) makes me glad I die. Hard to see where the future of this country is gonna go in 5-10 years, quality of life is rapidly declining, aimed removal of all gas power by 2030, as well as more and more infringement on our civil liberties and freedoms. We have people who are being accepted into the country who do not share our values or respect us as people (not all obviously) Our justice system is a joke to boot. Please dont take this as a support for Alberta leaving. I'm Canadian, but I just feel that doesn't amount for anything in my own country. The people in power now are the same theyve been for the last 10 years and the change being put forward isnt even remotely enough. This shit happening next door in America has not been and will not be limited to Trump, but to act like any of ours is remotely better is ridiculous. The end goal is control and how we as Canadians have voted and treated each other, is exactly how they get that.
