So I just realized something about the theme song to The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air and now I can’t unsee it.
In the intro, Will gets into a cab in Philadelphia… and then the next thing we see, he’s getting out in Bel-Air. That’s a cross-country trip.
Did he really just take a cab from Philly to Los Angeles?
That would be, what, 2,700+ miles? How much would that even cost? And what kind of driver agrees to that fare?
I’ve heard this song a hundred times and somehow never questioned it until now. Is this just cartoon logic, or is there something I’m missing?
Wait there's an extended intro?? 😂 I've been watching reruns my whole life and never seen plane footage. That makes way more sense than imagining some poor cab driver doing a week-long road trip to California 💀

I think the extended intro only plays in the first/pilot episode

First class, yo this is bad, drinking orange juice out of a champagne glass

Yeah that clears it up. The short version skips that detail, so it ends up sounding way more ridiculous than it actually is.

The full intro shows him on a plane; it's pretty great and now I feel old.

And it also shows Will begging his mum, whilst she’s packing his suitcase.

That cab would indeed be rare.

There were cabbies willing to drive to a different state. They told me their stories back in the day. Obviously very rare, you'd have to show the money up front. But cross country would probably be out of the question

i mean I think it's fair to assume that he took a cab to and from the airport at either end of the journey lol

Apparently an unknown concept to some.

You should watch the full intro of the show. He takes a plane to CA, then takes a cab to Bel Air. The full intro played for maybe the first half of season 1.

There’s a few lines about him being on an airplane originally but I think they cut the song down for the show.
In the full version he gets on the plane: https://youtu.be/1nCqRmx3Dnw?t=56

Here's the full intro with the verse about flying first class. The plane verse was cut in later episodes. Notice he hails the cab for the first time in front of the Hollywood sign. So even without the plane verse, you can see he's already in LA when he hails the cab.

Will gets into a cab in LA with the Hollywood sign in the background, then gets out of the same cab in Bel Air.
There's no cab in Philadelphia.
In the full song intro, his mother hands him an airplane ticket and then he's sitting in first class on an airplane.

Congrats, you successfully followed the narrative of a straightforward, 45 second television show introduction that came with a song explaining what happened while it's happening.

Yeah you’re right. No way he could’ve taken a cab to the airport, flew, then took another cab to Bel Air. That’s just not what people did.
The plane either picks you up at your front door or you take a cross country cab. Those are the only options
