I feel like the prices are putting people off of eating beef more than anything any medical group could say.

Low_Pickle_112 Mar 31, 2026 +1416
It'd be political suicide to even joke about doing something like this, but I wonder what would happen to those prices if we removed subsidies for animal products and let the free market that we all love so much decide.

luiytv Apr 1, 2026 +833
People are closer to imagining a world ravaged rather than imagine for a few seconds that they’d have to make lentils and beans a staple of their diet. My guess is that there would be riots.

Man, I was a vegetarian for 15 years. During that time, I had a few people actively trying to trick me into eating meat or implying they would hold me down and force feed me steak for my own good. These people are f****** insane.
67
jackkerouac81 Apr 1, 2026 +18
Yeah, you just have to shrug it off like it is a mild preference … “I don’t eat much meat these days.” Then people are just like; this person isn’t fun to pick on, let’s find a vegan and give them a swirly.
18
--frymaster-- Apr 1, 2026 +14
and yet, apparently, it’s the vegans who are “insufferable”.
14
A_Nonny_Muse Apr 1, 2026 +77
Last I heard, something like 20% of the population consume 80% of all beef. It's a rich man's meat. But this goes beyond just beef. They're saying chicken, pork, and everything dairy - milk regardless of source, milk products, cheese, eggs, everything. It looks like they want everyone to go vegan.
77
digiorno Apr 1, 2026 +92
The AHA wants everyone to have healthy hearts and not die from easily preventable ailments. It just so happens that a vegan diet is their recommended way to do achieve this goal.
92
Kyonikos Apr 1, 2026 +24
AHA may want everyone to eat healthy and not die of heart disease, but I've never been able to forget this detail about the IHOP on 135th street in Harlem: >The Harlem franchise is owned by eight physicians.. https://www.nytimes.com/2004/09/22/nyregion/sunday-best-with-syrup-on-top.html It struck me as a bit ironic.
24
DDGBuilder Apr 1, 2026 +6
They get money for feeding them, and more money for treating the illness
6
DerekB52 Apr 1, 2026 +39
As someone who loves eating animals, the future probably is vegan. Maybe lab grown meat becomes feasible. But, current agriculture practices to keep up the US beef demand are not sustainable, at all. If the world ate the diet the US ate, the world would fall apart. I also think part of it is coming from the people like Musk who want to see 20 billion people on Earth. You need a vegan earth at that point I think. If the birthrate drops globally and we get the population back down to 2 billion, we can probably sustainably raise some beef.
39
TheMapesHotel Apr 1, 2026 +54
The world is already falling apart and animal agriculture has a lot to do with it. Sadly several states are passing bans against lab grown meat to keep things the way they are
54
whereismymind86 Apr 1, 2026 +17
yeah, I really don't ever eat meat at home, it's just too expensive, I live off a lot of pasta and burritos, cereal, etc. I'll go out once in a while and get a burger or something, but it's a treat, not a day to day staple.
17
NiobiumThorn Apr 1, 2026 +34
We're talking the future of humanity and the fate of entire nations here. There will be riots. Pissing around doing nothing isn't gonna change that.

But we live in a representative republic with a regulated free market, not an anarchic system with an unregulated free market. A true free market would be a disaster. It doesn’t work in theory, because it breaks and becomes a monopoly/duopoly once entities reach critical mass in the market. That already happens in our regulated free market, it would accelerate in a true free market.
67
Voluptulouis Apr 1, 2026 +72
>That already happens in our regulated free market Indeed. It's hardly regulated enough. Billionaires shouldn't exist.

I like mujadara, especially with black lentils if you can find them. Lentil soups are also wonderful, and black lentils are good in many other meat substitute recipes because they stay firm. Other lentils are fine too. Oh and look into the egyptian dish, Koshary. It's lots of carbs but delicious. You can replace rice in any [x] and rice soup with yellow lentils if you're looking for something familiar. If you grind em up you can add red lentils to tomato based sauces and broth and barely notice a difference too. Dahl is great if you want something more lentil forward.
11
h_danielle Apr 1, 2026 +12
I honestly just toss red lentils into tomato pasta sauce whenever I make it. Can barely tell it’s even there
12
Fearless-Sandwich823 Apr 1, 2026 +4
I make African style red lentils for lunch daily. They are super easy. Pan, 3 cups of lentils or so (I don"t measure, and go by taste) top with water, add salt and a little oil. Cook low heat, stir. Add a little more water if necessary. When somewhat creamy/pasty, turn off the heat. Let sit for 5 minutes. Add a tablespoon or two of miso, a few tablespoons of cumin, a tablespoon of tumeric and a teaspoon of black pepper. Mix thouroughly. I put it on rice with kimchi, but by otself, with potatoes. It's hearty and tasty. It's part of my gout regimen.

hill-o Apr 1, 2026 +22
Any curry. Get a can of coconut milk, some good spices, and so on. I mix mine with whatever veggies I have and some cauliflower rice (though you could do regular rice too) and it's great.
22
waveyl Apr 1, 2026 +12
Coconut milk is high in saturated fats so tread carefully if you’re watching your intake
12
MoroseBarnacle Apr 1, 2026 +21
We sometimes cook lentils with taco mix instead of ground beef and use that for taco night. It's not a meat replacement where you could mistake lentils for beef, but it's a substitute hearty enough that you don't miss having beef.
21
bloodylip Apr 1, 2026 +3
I cooked red lentils in my rice cooker a while ago and was surprised at how quickly they broke down to a consistency pretty close to refritos. I assume if I had added more oil to it, the taste would have been close enough for me to not really notice a difference.

18
FatherDotComical Apr 1, 2026 +6
I love lentils. I boil them in beef broth and they make a great ground beef replacement. They can be used for taco meat by just following the taco seasoning packet like if you were using ground beef. Or you can add them to beef to stretch it further. Like a lentil meatloaf.

ShadowTacoTuesday Apr 1, 2026 +14
You won’t die you’ll just sometimes get weird side effects like extremely dry lips and joint pain. Accutane is an acne drug that’s similar to 3000-6000% RDI retinol (about 1-2 lbs. of liver per day), but it’s nasty stuff and often a last resort. Death takes a lot more retinol. Silver lining?
14
ManiacallyReddit Apr 1, 2026 +10
Eh... Maybe death is extreme. But Vitamin A is fat soluble and an excess won't get peed out. So if you were really to eat it as often as RFK feels "the poors" should in a carnivore-style, beef-based diet, you'd definitely incur some internal injury.

For everyone not reading more than the headline. The AHA is basically saying don’t eat only red meat and remember to eat plant protein as well. This is due to Trump Administration changes is dietary guidelines that called for people to eat more red meat and full fat dairy. Edit forgot to add they said to avoid fatty cuts of meat
1200
shot_ethics Apr 1, 2026 +243
The actual guidelines themselves are pretty circumspect about dairy. I’m a little surprised that Reuters chose to emphasize that part, I think just because the average American would connect with it. To quote from the AHA: “The potential benefits of low-fat and fat-free dairy products compared with full-fat dairy products are not without controversy and continue to be debated … conclusions could not be drawn about the relationship between higher-fat dairy and lower-fat dairy on blood lipids, blood pressure, and CVD mortality because of inadequate evidence … Given the available evidence, it would be prudent at this time to continue prior guidance to replace major sources of saturated fat, including dairy fat, with sources of unsaturated fat and to choose nonfat or low-fat dairy products.” https://www.ahajournals.org/doi/10.1161/CIR.0000000000001435 It’s not new advice, it’s not strong advice, it’s just their best read of the available science. The red meat stuff has a much stronger backing IMO.

Cheese is rarely the issue unless you are just gnawing through blocks of it in isolation. The issue is people who are downing multiple liters of milk and yogurt every week without understanding that it's a very cholesterol rich way to get some calcium.
10
DoingBestWeCan Apr 1, 2026 +19
This is from a very "woke" university hospital that toggles back and forth across being the top 1-10 in the entire US: https://rightasrain.uwmedicine.org/body/food/low-vs-whole-fat-dairy TL;DR: The most recent studies suggest that full-fat dairy can raise your good cholesterol without significantly increasing your bad cholesterol.  Also, studies have consistently shown that the probiotics in yogurt are good for you, potentially to the point of offsetting added sugars, for general health (obviously diabetics should avoid added sugar, but for healthy people, yogurt with added sugar doesn't appear to have negative effects).  Butter (which has had its chemical bonds changed) appears to be the only time that dairy fat is a clear cut problem.

Honestly, the “plant-based” part is less scary once you realize beans and peanut butter count. Easiest swap I’ve done: oat milk in coffee. Tastes fine, no cow involvement, zero lectures required.

A lot of coffee shops have removed their up charges these last few years. There's a big many org campaign which has gotten a ton of big chains and small chains to do it. Cheese is the hard one.  Everything else I find dairy alternatives to work just fine. There are a lot of recipes where cheese can just be cut or other things to make it creamy.  But.... There are situations where cheese is what you need. Pizza is the biggie for me, the alternatives just don't cut it.
20
LolaBleu Apr 1, 2026 +36
Honestly, the most "duh" moment I've ever had was someone telling me that I didn't have to go 100% vegan. If cheese is a deal breaker keep eating it and cut the other animal products out. Your health (and the environment) will still benefit. Do what you can, where you can.
36
Main_Photo1086 Apr 1, 2026 +5
I cut dairy out due to an intolerance and there are some pretty great cheeseless pizzas. But I live in NYC so I’m spoiled.
5

I figured I'd I cut back or eliminate the rest, cheese is gonna be fine. I will die before giving up pizza
37

Miyoko creamery mozzarella is a great substitute for DIY pizza night, and I really like Chau Cheese for grilled cheeses and regular sandwiches. Worth a try if you wanna just see how the flavors and textures of PB Cheeses have improved in the last decade alone. A good plant-based parmesan is still in the works in my opinion though :-/
8
redpoemage Apr 1, 2026 +5
Yeah, I have plant-based breaded chicken sandwiches for dinners and they’re fine but so much better with a slice of pepperjack! Too many people treat going vegetarian or vegan as all or nothing. Exploring substitutes for some things and keeping others and gradually reducing overall animal consumption over time is much likelier to stick, and sticking to a decrease long term makes much more of an impact than completely cutting things out for a short time.
5
KittyForTacos Apr 1, 2026 +11
I’m with you. I can give up everything else. But I will die before I give up cheese. Fine I don’t need to eat it every meal or every day. But I am not substituting anything for cheese.
11
shenanigans0127 Apr 1, 2026 +21
I've seen the sentiment from a few people now that going vegetarian + chicken nuggets or vegan + cheese or whatever it is for you is still a really great way to adjust your diet if you're looking at climate and animal welfare concerns. I'm vegetarian-ish out of convenience and eat a lot of vegan meat substitutes because I just like them, but I love a steak a few times a year and you can pry cheese from my cold, dead hands.
21
selphiefairy Apr 1, 2026 +7
Yeah, like a lot of things, telling people it's all or nothing will discourage people from even taking the first step. Plus you don't know everyone's specific situation re: health and finances. I feel the same away about overconsumption and fast fashion. A lot of people just decide "well i can't afford buying clothes that aren't fast fashion" and just give up, as if there aren't degrees to it!

I was a vegetarian for a while. Fake cheese did ok in some places. On an egg and cheese sandwich? Fine. Burger? Whatever, it was ok. Taco? Not bad. But not pizza or something where cheese matters like Mac and cheese or grilled cheese
7

I look at it this way: my diet is mostly plant based. A little (an ounce or so a day) cheese isn't going to take me out from my otherwise very healthy diet.
16
OnionMiasma Apr 1, 2026 +4
You mean pound, right? Surely nobody eats only an ounce of cheese.

6
Spare-Molasses8199 Apr 1, 2026 +3
also oat milk uses the least amount of water to process than ANY milk (nut or dairy). It’s truly what i would define as “guilt free” because it meets so many morals. And if it’s expensive, it’s so easy to make yourself!!

Yup especially for us trying to gain muscle mass, Greek yogurt breakfasts are a must

I really wish I liked Greek yogurt, but man it’s so…chalky? Idk what I’m doing wrong. :(

I love full fat Greek but something about plain fat free delights me and it's my socially acceptable sour cream product. (as in people treat you weird for just eating sour cream for some reason.)

Because the price on animal based protein (steak, chicken, etc) is so high it might give someone a heart attack?

My dad said things like that until he needed his first bypass operation. Then he realized that dying of heart disease is painful.  Unfortunately he is a trumper, so other types of trash started leaving his mouth around 2016.

Yeah, none of this limp-wristed clutching of the chest, nor the whimpering tone in the agonal breathing from me. There is going to be so much MYO in my myocardial infarction that my elevated ST segment is only gonna pale compared to how I elevate my weights in the gym. The vascular surgeon won't be able to muscle aside my hard plaque to inflate my stent in the coronary artery. Manliest death EVER.

You will pry my cheese out of my cold dead hands. Life is just not worth it without cheese. Not sorry for saying so. I’ll cut back the meat. I can live with less of it.

I know this isn't what you meant but I LIKE CHEESE AND I'M NOT SORRY would be the funniest culture war ever.

I’m not even kidding, if you quit dairy products long enough, it’s starts to taste weird.
38
anonymousmouse2 Apr 1, 2026 +6
Yup, can confirm. You crave what you’re used to eating. If you can give up something long enough, your body stops desiring it. I’ve been dairy free for six years and recently I had some dairy cheese and was a little grossed out by it.
6
geckofacts Apr 1, 2026 +18
Haven’t (intentionally) eaten cheese in over 10 years. Every time I’ve accidentally eaten it in more recent years, it tastes almost rotten. I miss cheese sometimes, but I definitely don’t crave whatever it tastes like to me now.

Carbonatite Apr 1, 2026 +10
I never put regular dairy in my coffee unless there's no other choice. I spent so many years drinking coconut milk that regular milk just tastes funny now. I also hate the taste of butter, I grew up eating margarine and so butter just tastes gross to me.

I really think America is sleeping on ToFu and mushrooms. Big old portobello with steak seasoning can help curb the beef cravings. I have personally reduced my beef intake to luxury cuts, which I would recommend to everyone to do for quality over quantity.

slumber_kitty Apr 1, 2026 +13
Tofu is magical because you can make it taste like basically anything. I ate a lot of it when I was in college, there was a stir fry place in the dining hall next to my dorm, my meal plan covered it which was such a life/money saver as a severely broke student.
13
Environmental_Job278 Apr 1, 2026 +20
Tried it once…besides the allergic reaction it wasn't half bad for a few seconds. I hate how political food is now because sometimes people take my food choices to be political instead of it being me trying to avoid breaking out in hives and shitting my pants.
20
Saneless Apr 1, 2026 +31
Tofu is finally clicking for me. Smash it up into little bits, lightly toast in a pan with a little bit of oil, and it's like ground chicken. Excellent tacos Best is it's like 4 pounds for 7 bucks and it keeps in the fridge for months
31
Fifteen_inches Apr 1, 2026 +11
It fries so well! If it weren’t for the weird hippie stigma it would be an American staple
11

And lentils. Not plain but if you add them to stuff they can give food a very meaty flavor.

My wife is vegan. I do all the cooking. I've learned to prepare tofu, mushrooms, and lentils and they're delicious and c****. Like super c****.

theragu40 Apr 1, 2026 +3
I made a mushroom and asparagus stroganoff the other week and it was so close to a beef stroganoff, it was crazy. Like you could tell there wasn't beef if you sat and thought about it, but it definitely wasn't the first thing to notice about it.

Mikejg23 Apr 1, 2026 +14
Last I read, besides butter, there wasn't much evidence that saturated fat from dairy was bad for you. Doesn't seem to cause the increased negative metabolic effects saturated fat from red meat does
14
jigokubi Apr 1, 2026 +9
The French eat more butter than anyone, and they've had the lowest rates of heart disease in the world for decades.
9
Mikejg23 Apr 1, 2026 +5
They also have a healthier overall lifestyle. I'm just going by what I've seen and recall. Butter seemed a bit iffier but whole milk, cheese and yogurt don't seem to have bad effects. Like anything though, butter and fatty red meat can get worked into a healthy diet with no issues
5
Zealousideal-Bite735 Apr 1, 2026 +5
Tell that to RFK. What is his motive for wanting people to drink whole milk and consume red meat and eat fries cooked in beef tallow?

I already eat plant based because I can't eat dairy without getting deadly ill
6
Main_Photo1086 Apr 1, 2026 +10
Honestly, when this happened before that was a big reason I went mostly plant based. I had to cut out dairy due to an intolerance and that coincided with the higher meat prices. So I gave plant proteins a shot and in my 40s I discovered I actually love cooking now that I don’t feel like I have to cook meat.

Wheres_my_wank_sock Mar 31, 2026 +208
Let's be real here. The people who need help the most aren't eating lean meat protein, whole milk, and cottage cheese. They are fat people with terrible diets. Step one should be eating some grilled chicken and veggies. They need better advice than don't eat meat or drink milk. Shit is dumb and unrealistic. Completely unhelpful.

International_Bee653 Mar 31, 2026 +54
I think the news media gets more clicks by emphasizing very specific diets but it's in the context of people failing not shoveling salt and sugar on a day to day basis. AHA's guidance of avoiding excessive sugar and salt is much more relevant to Americans but it's "boring" and people have tuned it out.
54
veggeble Apr 1, 2026 +26
Part of the problem is that the availability of affordable healthy options is almost nonexistent, while calorie dense sodium and sugar bombs are available pretty much everywhere at all times. People like to act like a poor diet is a failure of the individual, but it's a public health crisis that needs to be addressed beyond the decisions of each individual.
26
Emperor_Neuro Apr 1, 2026 +19
Travel to Europe or Asia and it becomes abundantly clear that Americans have terrible access to healthy foods.
19
ashoka_akira Mar 31, 2026 +9
Yea exactly, I prep most of my own meals and fast food for me these days is a california roll. I figure I eat so little fat I can have real butter for my breakfast and cream for my coffee.

step dad has serious heart disease issues but still eats pigs head and other crazy high cholesterol foods. Mom tried switching him to healthier and he kept saying, "wheres the beef" and just ate out more. Some people just dont care lol
10
Gandhehehe Apr 1, 2026 +8
I mean while it’s anecdotal, I’m in a family that has probably 2/3rd considered overweight, yet the 3 people with heart related disease/issues, 2 of whom have passed from them, they were definitely along the leanest and not considered overweight. All 3 even are not genetically related. My grandfather, tall and lean who would walk multiple kilometers a day, an aunt through marriage who died at 48 and had probably never been overweight in her life, and an uncle through marriage who has had to pay attention to all this sort of stuff since I was a small child, and has always been regular sized compared to my family of large giants who all probably qualify as overweight, yet the only death is from a drug overdose and old age. We all know obesity is bad but pretending the issues it exacerbates don’t affect anyone it’s ignorant and dangerous.
8
bfilippe Mar 31, 2026 +36
Reality has no bias here. No amount of saturated fat is good. Shaming "fat people" is foolish here because plenty of skinny Americans get heart disease. The job of the AHA is to point to the causes and risks.

minidog8 Apr 1, 2026 +11

You don’t need to re0lace full fat dairy. Just eat less dairy.
4
JollyJulieArt Apr 1, 2026 +3
I think it’s more important to encourage Americans to cut the sugar intake and highlight the importance of a balance diet. But serious, sugar is making us super fat and super dumb.

AHA is a bullshit company. Their CEO makes over $4 million a year. Any food company they “endorse as heart healthy” pays them to do so. They contradict their own sodium standards for many of the frozen foods they endorse. They get money from Big Sugar. Most of the companies with their logo on it are shitty food giants. Everyone is better off eating from small food companies and as local as possible. Meat or vegetarian. It doesn’t matter what they say. (I’m a vegetarian btw)

This is one of those things that, if it were a movie, people might think is unrealistic. Animal agriculture isn't good for the climate (which is another problem that's only going to get more concerning), the ethics are dubious at best on the scale that we do it (ag gag laws exist for a reason), and many people at least in the US anyway eat way more than the healthy amount. And yet, we continue on as the planet gets warmer. Pointing any of this out gets met with a ton of pushback. I don't even blame all the people either. If you don't have a kitchen or the time to cook (and I've lived like that, it happens and it sucks) your convenience options are pretty much all meat. We really do need to rethink this in a big way as a society and for a multitude of reasons.

No full fat dairy. And no salt. I mean this just borders on silly. The Mediterranean lifestyle does neither and has some of the best health and longevity outcomes in the world. This just smacks of a lack of real understanding of the intersection between healthiness of foods and the importance of long term adherence to recommendations.

alsotheabyss Apr 1, 2026 +7
Or, keep your full fat milk, but have *less of it*. There’s no reason you need to have a bucket of coffee. A dash in your espresso should be sufficient
7

exactly. I need my bucket of coffee!

I was diagnosed with Congestive Heart Failure and pre diabetes about 3 years ago. I switched to a plant based diet, which was pretty easy since I don’t like eggs and haven’t had a glass of milk since high school (aside from an occasional cappuccino). Long story short, within 6 months my blood sugar was perfectly normal and in 2 years my heart is functioning normally. I have to thank modern medicine, but cardiologist says the plant based diet made a huge difference.

I’ve been vegetarian for 4 years and fully vegan for a year and my blood markers are incredible. I’m a healthy guy but I was shocked to see my cholesterol so low and my T so high lol. All these manosphere chodes think you need to eat an entire cow in order to be “masculine”. I’ll stick to my tofu, rice, and vegetables.
15
anonymousmouse2 Apr 1, 2026 +8
Same. Been vegan for six years now. I do annual blood tests and have watched my cholesterol drop and testosterone increase over that time. Yet i still have uninformed assholes tell me about how tofu will make you grow t***. I eat that shit for most meals.
