>The Taliban claimed Coyle had been detained for "violating the applicable laws of Afghanistan." Good thing the unapplicable laws weren't violated by this guy. Who knows what would have happened to him then. >Coyle is an academic from Pueblo, Colorado, who had been detained in Afghanistan since Jan. 27, 2025, according to a website set up by his family. What happened the week of Jan 27, 2025 that made the Taliban go after this guy, I wonder. >He first arrived in Afghanistan in the early 2000s, where he worked to survey Afghanistan's linguistic diversity and help communities develop resources in their own languages, according to his family.

They probably released him because  president chaos goblin had zero interest in trying to help an academic, so they realized he was useless as a pawn.  That said, I hope he recovers from the ordeal well.

Also with tension between Afghanistan and Pakistan boiling over into open fighting the Taliban is actually looking for some good will from other countries for once so they look "better" than Pakistan, and even that includes trying to curry some favor with the US.

This is great news I'm my opinion. It was of course horrible he was imprisoned. But having the Taliban make the decision that he has served enough time in prison and can be released is surprising and a complete 180 from what I am used to. When I grew up any one captured by the Taliban either disappeared or was publicly executed. This is big news for me. It did involve his family his family making pleas for his release. However in the past the government couldn't negotiate a release of a person.

The Taliban treat US hostages better than US police treat US citizens.

Seems like more of an indictment of the US than an endorsement of the Taliban
