I’m old enough to remember Daniel Pearl 😪

I watched what happened to him out of morbid curiosity as a teen and it messed me up for a while. 9/11 and its aftermath changed life as we knew it up to that point.

This is horrible. She and other journalists are brave AF working from countries like Iraq. I hope she gets released safely and is unharmed.

Journalists are targets and they know it. That's the job. And for all criticism journalists as a profession often rightly face, the ones that report from warzones are incredibly brave. The dirty little secret is everybody kills journalists. Israel and the USA bomb them. The Iranians shoot them. The Saudis cut them into very small bits. The Russians chuck them out of windows. But they do the job anyway. I hope she is released. If they just wanted her dead she'd be dead, so there is hope.

Mahsa Amini. It isnt just Americans

ProlapseMishap Mar 31, 2026 +50
Oh yeah, I know that, but sadly many Americans don't give a shit about anyone else. Being a former fighter in our last forever wars I can say that many Americans don't give a shit about Americans either. They just want to beat their chests from the comfort of their recliners so their fat asses can hang an American flag on their mobility scooter like they did something.

I am an American. The women in these places are absolutely f----ed. Figuratively and literally. There are likely a whole lot more moderate women like me in the US than their are those that you described and characterized. I wonder how many us politely avoid the people on both statistical "tails" of the polical spectrum because we can't stand listening anymore. Perhaps we are also why polling data has fallen apart --we don't answer polls anymore either. I used to, in part to see how the questions were phrased. I don't have to wonder anymore, all the polling questions are now phrased to so one side "wins" the poll and can hammer the other side. Thanks for serving. Seriously, thanks. We are far from perfect, but you are one of the good guys.

The IR regime loves to flaunt the Epstein case as a gotcha, but the truth is that they themselves embody the end-game of the Epstein class in the US if we do not bring them to justice. It is known so far that Epstein’s operations have amounted to $1.9 billion to operate a pedophile/blackmail ring for a small group of elites away from legal/public scrutiny. But in Iran, even the lowest regime thugs can arbitrarily (under the pretext of maintaining order) pick off civilians from the street to murder or r***. It does not make any sense to condemn our elites for being part of the Epstein circle without condemning the IR regime, because the latter is committing the crimes of the former on a national scale.

Your comment brought a few things to mind. First, Amartya Sen 1990 work >"More Than 100 Million Women Are Missing" https://share.google/k5MUC4z6vRKbG3J2W He was later awarded the Nobel Prize. Now it is higher, and 13 million women are estimated to be "missing" from The Gulf. Second, the last few words in one of Leonard Cohen's final poems. >"Oh and one more thing >you aren't going to like >what comes after America Third, he got by with it. https://share.google/images/jnKE0vCyJ9iby23pU

To be quite frank with you, at this point, I see Trump as a transitional buffoon, a ‘Cheeto man’ of ‘Mango Mussolini’, rather than the main event. He’s an illiberal populist, but he lacks the consistency to be a coherent ideologue. There is an explicitly fascist far right that is rapidly chipping away at his base, especially amongst younger demographics, and I now have come to believe that they represent the next mainstream of the American right wing, which as Nick Fuentes once put it himself, the end goal is a ‘white Catholic Taliban’. To be precise, I’m not so sure about ‘Catholic’, but I wouldn’t be so surprised if ethnonationalist theocracy entered the mainstream in the near future.

I read this the morning it came out. It was during the 2016 primary. Later that day, I re-read it, but aloud to my teenage kids, who were far to young and annoyed >"Trump and the Rise of the Unprotected - WSJ https://share.google/Q8umiavvVAVlsUqIy The writer, Peggy Nonnan, was awarded the Pulitzer prize for commentary, because she nailed it, and not just in the US. Nevertheless, we "unprotected" in the western democracies have protections, which is why I wantes people to remember Mahsa Amini. I really should cringe through a few minutes of Nick Fuentes. The fringe right/left will do about anything for attention. The left tried to cancel "PAW Patrol" because "Chase" a cartoon dog, was a police.🤣

Honestly I could give a shit about listening anymore. I've heard decades of aspirational bullshit about what Americans 'are', yet I've seen what we will really produce as time has progressed. I've seen it in almost all of my family and the majority of the people I once considered friends, and almost none of them have stepped away. And now, this 'gee sucks' centrist approach to obvious authoritarianism is going to get a lot of Americans killed while likely wrecking our economy and everyone back home will only be worried about gas prices and the DOW. It'll be just like the meaningless shit so many of us watched our friends die for, but this time with much more death, and zero meaning. Not all Americans did this, but it doesn't stop it from being the product of our society. We've let ourselves become Russia 2.0 and it'll reflect on us in every way it has on them, no matter what stories we keep telling ourselves about who we are.
6
BarfingOnMyFace Apr 1, 2026 +3
The problem isn’t just limited to just centrists. we are so far from centrists, I’d say that chunk of the nation is pretty much dead now. You are either left, right, or an outcast. What pushed us this far off the cliff is definitely the maga movement. But the other side of the problem is that democrats have no teeth, because all these asshats are bought and paid for by the same set of American oligarchs. Left, right, and middle are now simply weaponized forms of political engagement used by the wealthy class to keep us in check.

Honestly what I've been dreading since this dipshit kicked this whole thing off. We have so much exposure in the region between contractors, journalists, and service members and Israel has already stoked the fire before us and we've betrayed just about any ally in the region over the last 20 years, so there will be plenty of rats to give people up. Additionally, we've destabilized and went to war with a county with worldwide networks and capabilities that are almost sure to go after airlines at some point and they have a metric shitpile of manpads. I really don't think people comprehend what we've stepped in yet.
13
theuncleiroh Mar 31, 2026 +32
It's part of the plan: make things worse for your people so that you have an excuse to further invading countries and eliminating rights and descending into fascism. Same thing israel does with antisemitism; it's easier to justify your program when you further the justification

You know, like a few months ago before you were cheering on his new forever war was waged without any congressional approval? You people are going to get a lot of Americans killed over the next couple decades and we're a weaker nation because of you. Hope you're happy with the bowl of pedophile shit we're all going to be forced to eat for years to come. So happy we all get to suffer the consequences of your degen minds.
35
Common-Soup-664 Mar 31, 2026 -37
Who's you people? I did not vote for Donald Trump. I am still able to hold other people accountable for their actions. Don't infantilize an entire region because you think Donald Trump controls the entire world. They're big boy and girls over there that are responsible for their actions.
-37
ProlapseMishap Mar 31, 2026 +10
> I did not vote for Donald Trump And I didn't take a dump after my morning coffee. And right now, Donald Trump is largely in control of spiraling global markets and all of the shit he just started. Follow on effects are heavily studied, modeled, and accepted by the people planning all of this garbage and Trump knew all about it, or at least what he was able to stay awake for in his video briefings. He started a war in a region that had just began to stabilize itself after we left it a mess from our last Republican dipshit started his dumbass war.

The only reason we are there is the Epstein files and trump acting as a lap dog for isreal. This is the same regime that was in power his first term and he didn't care about them, then. In fact, he is the one that removed the nuclear research monitoring agreement that Obama had made. Curious how concerned he is about their weapons research after removing the monitoring himself.
-8
Common-Soup-664 Mar 31, 2026 +14
Yea we absolutely should not be in Iran. Iraq is actually a separate country if you weren't aware and they still shouldn't be abducting journalists.

Article says the suspected group is Iranian linked. Iraq is a majority Shia country with lots of ties to Iran. This could very much be a result of the US actions in Iran. Things have been quiet in Iraq for a number of years, then the US bombs Iran and western journalists go missing in Iraq.

Are you apologizing for the terrorism from the Trump regime? Sure seems like you are, it was recently confirmed that the US bombed 2 schools rather than 1 on the same day, you can’t spread terrorism in other countries and then be shocked when there’s a reaction, the only one excusing this c*** is you

Obviously, I and a lot of people have a great amount of respect for journalist who are willing to be brave to try and report on important events, but realistically there’s a limit to what people should be able to risk and still expect their government to help them. It’s frustrating because obviously now there’s gonna be her family coming out criticizing the government if they don’t immediately free 10 trillion terrorist prisoners and promised to destroy all their Jewish space lasers to secure their release. I understand the family is gonna say whatever it takes to try and pressure their government to help secure the life of a family member, but after a certain point there should be the expectation that they got themselves into that situation and it’s not reasonable to expect a government to give up a crazy amount for one person because of media headlines. It’s frustrating to see this happen so often.
2
Objective-Ruin-1791 Apr 1, 2026 +2
And she was warned of threats against her, including kidnapping.
2
Gold-Invite-3212 Apr 1, 2026 +1
I assume the majority of American journalists are very well aware that their government will not negotiate for their release in situations like this.  Yes, their families will often make statements critical of the government. If it was your family member, you probably would too.
