Going on The Critical Drinker in the first place says more about him than those comments.

Andy Weir possibly being a chud was not exactly what I wanted to hear after enjoying Project Hail Mary so much.

Oh. Gross. Weir went on the Critical Drinker's channel?

V2Blast Mar 30, 2026 +23
Yep. He claims to be a big fan.

It's such an odd move. It's possible he's so apolitical that he didn't realize Drinker had done the right wing grifter turn. Either way it's out of touch.

It feels like nine times out of ten “apolitical” means “right wing but doesn’t want to admit it.”

THANK YOU. I can't decide if I hate NuTrek or the Critical Drinker more (probably the latter), so I've been particularly torn by Weir's comments.

Who/what is critical drinker? Sorry for being out of the loop. I don't know Weir either but reading what he said, as a very longtime Trek fan, I agreed with his comment tbh haha. He said he didn't hate Enterprise but it was weird, Strange New Worlds was pretty good, Lower Decks was entertaining and fun, but he didn't like a lot of the new Trek stuff even though he thought Kurtzman was nice. Probably as a professional, he shouldn't have characterized them as shit haha. I guess it's difficult to have a negative public opinion when it's truly an opinion (and not something heinous). Podcasts can be incredibly conversational, and sometimes I feel like people forget it can read differently outside the room.

He's an "anti-woke" style movie reviewer who whines a lot and is basically insufferable.

RedditModsHarassUs Mar 30, 2026 -4
It’s critically okay. But the insufferable part to me about him. Is the fact that he still puts things on  blast, things you can tell didn’t bug him or bother him. Simply because he knows it’s what his audience wants to hear. That’s his true insufferable behavior. And people who are smart. Can tell that about him. He’s literally pandering for most part, while being honestly critical about things worth being critical about. It’s actually hella funny that he and Sean Ferrick(spelling? Sorry Sean) but they agree on critical things in Star Trek more than either would ever let on. Drinker just doubles down on the other stuff, for his audience; and you can see he’s not really bothered by all of it personally.

If he's hiding his "legitimate criticism" in a sea of engagement/rage bait pandering to his "fans".... Then the latter invalidates everything else he's saying. It makes him an untrustworthy critic when you have to determine for yourself what is real and what is just pandering to the audience. Say what you want about Sean and Trek Culture, but at least they're consistently focused on the legitimate criticisms and their Ups & Downs videos are usually pretty balanced. I don't always agree with their takes, but at least they explain them and also state its their subjective opinion and don't try to claim it as objective fact. There's a huge distinction between what they put out vs the absolute drek that Drinker and his troll buddies put out.

I love ups and downs. Especially the Cetation Observations segment.  That’s how I know they agree on so many things. But Critical is trying to cater to his audience. im just saying that the points they both find criticize tend be valid points and Drinker obviously isn’t offended by things he pretends to be offended by, for his audience. He does it a lot for both ST and Marvel.

Why do you keep defending him? He's trash ***because*** he panders to his audience. It sounds like you're saying "I've met Tucker Carlson in real life and he's a great guy who doesn't actually believe the batshit crazy stuff he says, he's 'just playing a character' for his audience"... Like... No, f*** that. He's profiting by pedaling hate and bigotry. That makes him a hateful bigot. End of f****** story.

It's not a huge jump when you keep bending over backwards to say "he's not that bad, he's just pandering to his audience". Clearly I struck a nerve with that and you are just upset at being called out for it. Lashing out about it only makes you look worse. Edit: lol, blocked... further proving my point that they are just upset that I noticed and called out their bad behavior. Instead of reflecting on "why would anyone think that?" they jump to "you attacked me and put words in my mouth"... No dude, I didn't put words in your mouth. I read the words you wrote repeatedly making excuses for Drinker. Weather you meant to or not, it sure as f*** looked like you were defending his sorry ass.

Just another white guy that complains about women and minorities in media

Meaty_Wizard Mar 30, 2026 +8
Came to say this, used to subscribe years ago when it was funny and more about stupid choices in movies, unsubbed when he "found his audience" and whined about any woman in any movie. Ugh. Sorry.

TheBurgareanSlapper Mar 30, 2026 +8
It’s a ragebaity, “anti woke” show.

braxin23 Mar 31, 2026 +16
To my honest opinion f*** kurtzman.
16
mistercartmenes Mar 30, 2026 +35
Why? Kurtzman is a hack.
35
kinisonkhan Mar 30, 2026 -4
I know, it totally explains why Lower Decks and Strange New Worlds were horrible and deserved to be canceled. /s

Savings_Pie_8470 Mar 30, 2026 +27
Lower Decks was run by Mike McMahan, don't be trying to give Kurtzman more credit than he's due.
27
kinisonkhan Mar 30, 2026 -10
Kurtzman was executive producers for Lower Decks, if he sucks, then why did he produce 50 episodes?
-10
LivedLostLivalil Mar 30, 2026 +8
Executive producers can have a wide range of responsibilities from doing everything to never showing up as part of the production whatsoever. Mike ran everything on lower decks, Kurtzman did very little, and is not responsible for the show's success.
8
kinisonkhan Mar 30, 2026 -8
Yeah he did very little, except executive produce 50 freakin episodes! Yeah Kurtzman is hit or miss, he definitely shouldn't write or produce Trek movies as he has a better track record with Trek shows.
-8
robreddity Mar 31, 2026 +4
His trek shows are liquid shit.
4
LivedLostLivalil Mar 30, 2026 +9
Like I said, being executive producer can mean doing nothing other than having your name attached so you can have an executive producer that did not contribute to its success whatsoever. He was not director of strange new worlds, did some directing with discovery and directed Starfleet academy. Discovery was just meh, and Starfleet academy is garbage. Picard was just meh too. As for lower decks it is 1 of 2(prodigy being the other) that Kurtzman is only an executive producer due to the studio and has no input in production or writing.
9
kinisonkhan Mar 30, 2026 -2
If what you say is true, then why blame Kurtzman if he had nothing to do with the shows?
-2
PetyrDayne Mar 31, 2026 +2
Holy f*** you know nothing about production.
2
kinisonkhan Mar 31, 2026 +1
I know that "If the show sucks, Kurtzman was clearly the reason why it sucked", or "If the show is great, then Kurtzman had nothing to do with the show".
1
Savings_Pie_8470 Mar 30, 2026 +1
Mike was also an executive producer in the show, but also the showrunner, a writer, and literally the creator of the series.  Again, stop trying to the credit to Kurtzman when Mike was the one running things.
1
jerslan Mar 30, 2026 +4
Kurtzman was the one who pitched the idea to Mike when he reached out to hire him to run it. IIRC this is something Mike himself confirmed in a number of interviews. A simple fact is: McMahon doesn't make Lower Decks if Kurtzman doesn't hire him for the job first.

Born-Ad4658 Mar 31, 2026 +2
I agree it suckes
2
braxin23 Mar 31, 2026 +2
Compared to Picard?
2
CDavis10717 Mar 31, 2026 +2
I saw only the first episode of Picard, it was offered free. I had great anticipation, but the liberal and obvious use of a stunt doubt for Picard, stunts like running or going up stairs, was just too obvious and sad, actually. The aging of Data was a shock. The media made of fuss of the sweater he wore. The insatiable need to squeeze money from all IP is ruining all IP.

DEADB33F Mar 31, 2026 +1
Picard was shite, but the final series did somewhat redeem it.

He's been successful for some time, but the publicity surrounding the PHM film has taken on a life of its own. Clearly he thinks he's the sh\*t now and can give his "honest" opinion about anything. Declining to answer would have been the classy thing.

Why are we even hearing about this, it’s such an unimportant moment

Scared_Wrangler3419 Mar 30, 2026 +1
Agreed. This distraction based nothingness meant to bait us. Weir is a good writer. I don't GIVE A F*** about random comments he makes, especially about other science fiction.
1
SpamBot500 Mar 31, 2026 +9
Weir is a good storyteller. He’s a mediocre writer.

uncivilshitbag Mar 31, 2026 +1
Thank you, I enjoyed the story of PHM but I struggled to get through the book. His idea of dialogue is atrocious.

bluehawk232 Mar 30, 2026 +3
Kurtzman worked with Orci, enough said

Mr Weir’s lame humor attempt is reflected by the characters in his books.

Seriously. Star Trek has a ton of writing problems (and I WANT woke Trek, not just lazy sloppy token woke) but Weir is a f****** BORE. Project Hail Mary was my biggest disappointment in awhile after everyone and their mother proclaimed it to be the best sci-fi put to paper in 50 years. Spoilerish material for PHM >!Oh your character doesn't face a single challenge above their ability? And they solve each one immediately in the order they arise? Oh and there are no devils choices because "cant we just have one happy story where everything works out?" Sure, but thats not very provocative. Well at least we xan drive the story with an interesting character! Oh he's an engineer with Mormon humor sensibilities.....f*** give me NuTreks awful humor! At least Ill be angry about it instead of just .... remembering eyerolling groanworthy humor of my engineer United Christian family dinners.!<

Lol I'm not allowed to have an opinion? On either thing? Brutal.... I'm sorry you have invested your entire personality into media such that a stranger not liking it hurts your self image.

So you found PHM boring but star trek TNG is gold tier for you? I like star trek but PHM is better, also, I dont like hating on other people's hard work like you

Andy Weir once said: “I deeply dislike social commentary. For instance, as a lifelong Star Trek fan, it’s always bothered me that there is a presumed “responsibility” within Star Trek shows to talk about social issues. I just want to watch Romulans and the Federation shoot at each other.” So I don’t think I’d hire him either lol.

maybe-an-ai Mar 31, 2026 +1
He's right. Modern Star Trek is not Science Fiction anymore.

Damn. I’ve never soured on someone so fast. Claiming to be a “huge fan” of the critical drinker is kinda all I need to know.

I don't even want to be famous enough for my fragile ego to be newsworthy. I want a job where my only responsibility is reporting on nerds' fragile egos.

Star Trek nerds are second only to Star Wars nerds in their hatred of their own fandom.
