The popularity of this group shows how hungry people are for uniqueness at a time when so many musicians are trying to copy what's already worked in the past.

The trend I see is people using AI to try to crank out instant hits. I think these guys went viral on youtube because they are very different, and also good.

I dont know man there is no shortage of weird gimmicks in music. It sounds good and all but this is hype.
Honestly, it makes good content for other influencers to put this in the thumbnail with a big red arrow and a shocked face. thats whats driving the popularity. Its not the music or the gimmick, but the fact it can be successfully leveraged to drive engagement for non-related content creators.

Mmm, gonna disagree with you on this particular act. Of course that happens in certain cases. This was making the rounds with musicians and music tastemakers before influencers got to it. It's a bit, not a gimmick with AdP. Something can be organic and still make its way to garbage internet people (influencers, etc). It caused me pause when I first saw the KEXP video.

Playing in elaborate costumes, simple design, while building songs on carefully gain staged pedals and then easily looping all harmonic parts, played by thoroughly rehearsed musicians ~~isn’t a gimmick.~~ attracts people too.
It’s a concept set wrapped into a low budget concept show.
You’re free to hate it, but to proclaim that you know why others like it is just non-sensical. Even if there are people who like it for the gimmick factor. Those are everywhere.
You had said people think gimmicks are bad, but you’re tying it to “this is hype”.
1
greifconstableMar 26, 2026
this is cynical af man, word salad of social media analysis. the visual “gimmick” pulls people in but they stay for the music. the gimmick enhances the music and the music enhances the gimmick. they went for something and totally nailed it, don’t reduce two genuinely talented and clearly passionate guys down to some social media hatred nonsense and live a little

It's not even "unique" by any means other than wearing some stupid costumes as a gimmick. The music is boring and derivative. They just caught on to a bunch of social media algorithms at the right time. In a few months no one will care and will have moved on to whatever else social media is telling them is the next "cool" thing.
-22
tameoraisteMar 25, 2026
+2
Musically, are they ‘unique’? No, it’s nearly impossible to find completely unique music. I’ve heard similar math rock, even performed by duos.
To say it’s ‘boring’ and ‘derivative’ is nonsense though. Stop stating opinions like they’re a matter of fact.
Sometimes a ‘gimmick’ is what brings bands to the table; Bowie, Daft Punk, Gorrilaz etc.
In an age when music videos are dead and we have access to almost every song in the world, we should be looking for MORE creativity that draws people into actually going to gigs, not dismissing it purely as a ‘gimmick’
2
KoosGooseMar 25, 2026

Everyone’s talking about them, but they only post this one song. I’ve never heard anything else by them.
And yeah, their microtonal/atonal stuff reminds me of some Primus tunes, but these guys are way less compelling as a band.
Edit: Just listened to their KEXP set. It gets boring fast. The whole thing kinda feels like layers of gimmicks. Idk.

DangerjayneMar 25, 2026
I have a feeling they paid to have their content pushed on different platforms. Just like that one instrumental band that wears those beaded masks

The costumes started because they were booked twice in one week for a venue that didn't allow the same band twice in that period, and they didn't want to look like the same band. They went viral after doing a live performance on a Seattle radio station.
These are two people from a very remote, backwoods part of northern Québec, not your usual savvy connected Internet influencers.

What's irritating to me is that there are plenty of interesting unique bands it's just a lot of people don't take the time to spread their musical tastebuds a bit more.
Thanks to their striking visual identity I think it helped a lot once they managed to get a s*** on KXCP and all of the "music reactors" spread it around it helped out eyes on it.
Angine de poitrine seems to have captured a lucky lightning in a bottle though and I couldn't be more thrilled
I found them about 4 months ago and I was entranced by their weird thing but ultimately realised how fun they were as musicians. And incredibly talented to loop on a dime like that microtonally no less
But still. People need to learn to spread their wings more I think.

i haven't done the deep dive yet but i have a suspicion that the initial burst of posts about them were astroturfing. i remember looking into a few of the accounts posting them everywhere on twitter and reddit and seeing they had very little/no activity or were active years ago in completely unrelated communities.
they've gotten big enough now that it's mostly people genuinely sharing them but i'm fairly sure they were pushed hard by their label or PR or whoever to get eyes on them, and their image/sound helped with shareability from then on.
so yes they are everywhere but i think it was by design, not by genuine grassroots word of mouth

The point was that the KEXP performance is where everyone got caught. You're arguing that they astroturfed their way to KEXP maybe?
Looks like they had been doing some other small performances beforehand - so I dunno, seems like they had some niche / regional connections over the past 4 years or so.
Given that they're very silly, I can see people just giggling at it and growing from there - especially given the times.

On the other hand I've seen so many posts in so many different places saying they've not been interested in any new music for a long time, or not this type of music in a long time etc etc, but something about this band has them hooked.
I haven't been interested in 'guitar'-type music since around 1994. I've barely posted anything music-related here in the many years of being on Reddit (despite being a musician in the past) until coming across this band a few weeks ago.

The visual adds so much to the music. I listened to it a few times without and it’s cool, but not something I’d put on again. Add the visual dimension and you’re transported to the island of weird and it’s great. Smart marketing atvl
25
TheslootwhispererMar 25, 2026

It's not even marketing. They filled in for a band that cancelled at the last minute and since they had played that venue the night before, they decided to put on some costumes and play different material. Apparently they "regret" the move because it makes it a lot harder to play with the costumes on but in the other hand they enjoy the anonymity.

Agree, they are super talented. It’s amazing they can do that with two people, but if they were a trio (and didn’t rely on repetitive, looping riffs), it would be much more appealing to my personal taste.

14
selvianoMar 25, 2026

Yes! I almost like them. I like math rock in general, and as much as two people creating this is a feat, I think they would be more listenable with even an average third member, so they don’t rely on (IMO) monotonous loops.

It feels very repetitive to me, but still fairly decent. Teenage me probably would have loved this, because I can hear stylistic similarities to a handful of 90's bands in here. Meat Puppets comes to mind, for some reason.
And while I'm usually either unaffected by outlandish visuals or enjoy them, something about the costumes grates my nerves in an irrational way. It's sort of a KISS problem. They look one way and sound another.
2
djayhMar 25, 2026
+3
I don't know if I liked it; but I didn't *dislike* it.
And it could just be the costumes, but it felt like it was the soundtrack for an animated chase scene, something with an art style like Keep Your Hands off Eizouken! or the old Klasky-Csupo stuff; full of smear frames and where "off-model" takes a back seat to "but it looks cool".
