I can get behind charming little sci-fi mindfuck romcoms being Samberg's thing now

Palm Springs was excellent.

Just watched it for the first time a couple weeks ago. Loved it and I’ve been thinking about it ever since

Plus being 90 mins. It’s the perfect runtime.

So damn good. Probably the best time loop movie in a long time.

Kevbot1000 Mar 30, 2026 +5
First one I've seen in ages to really do something new with the concept.

Yes loved it!

> While Samberg was originally set to star opposite Jean Smart, the Emmy- and Golden Globe-winning star of HBO Max’s Hacks, he now has a new romantic counterpart in five-time Oscar nominee Annette Bening (Nyad). Also new to the project is Michael Schwartz, the director (alongside Tyler Nilson) of the acclaimed indies The Peanut Butter Falcon and Los Frikis, who takes over the reins from Craig Gillespie. > Written by Seth Reiss (The Menu, A Big Bold Beautiful Journey), based on a story by Reiss and Samberg, 42.6 Years follows Ben (Samberg), who after an experimental procedure leaves him cryogenically frozen for 42.6 years, sets out to re-connect with his ex-girlfriend Ruthie (Bening) and while he hasn’t aged a day, she’s lived an entire lifetime without him.

Snowbofreak Mar 30, 2026 +123
So, the implication being that he was dating someone 22 years younger than him. Now, will find she is 20 years older than him?
123
Sphiffi Mar 30, 2026 +140
I think it’ll be played as if he’s in his mid late 30s and she’ll be 70s.

And the specific amount of time of 42.6 years makes me think that their age gap is going to be exactly half of that. He was 21.3 years older than her before he got frozen, and afterwards he'll be 21.3 years younger than her.
40
FIRST_DATE_ANAL Mar 31, 2026 +10
They’ll both be de-aged a d*** freckle I imagine
10
TripleThreatTua Mar 30, 2026 +64
Samberg is still very capable of playing someone young
64
veryverythrowaway Mar 30, 2026 +54
100%. People forget acting isn’t reality, it’s all about the performance. Samberg has a youthful demeanor and sense of humor. They could make that work, easily.

angershark Mar 31, 2026 +7
It's one of the worst things to come out of social media outcries (among many others). The idea that an actor is taking work away from a real person of whatever affliction/characterization is being portrayed is such a f****** joke.
7
PianoConcertoNo2 Mar 31, 2026 -12
Yeah, he’s pretty stunted.
-12
overthemountain Mar 31, 2026 +8
Not that young. Annette Bening is only 20 years older than Samberg. He'll likely be close to 50 by the time this comes out (he turns 48 in a few months).
8
shaunika Mar 31, 2026 +14
He doesnt look 48
14
Entfly Mar 31, 2026 +3
He doesn't look 30 either
3
shaunika Mar 31, 2026 +11
They said 30s not 30. Im 36 and he can easily look my age with some movie magic
11
PossessedToSkate Mar 31, 2026 +7
My guess is that they'll leave Samberg alone and digitally de-age Bening for the "earlier" stuff. My understanding is that de-aging works best on actors with lots of film sources to work from, and Bening certainly has that.
7
KidDelicious14 Mar 30, 2026 +4
What?
4
Perpete Mar 30, 2026 +7
Samberg is 47 y old. Benning is 67 y old. It's a bit difficult to imagine they were both 25/30 y old at the time of his disappearance.
7
amodelsino Apr 1, 2026 +1
Andy Samberg is 47, he does not look 47. It is very believable for him to play someone who is not 47.
1
LindyNet Apr 1, 2026 +1
Sounds like a remake of Late for Dinner (1991)
1
Jasper0812 Mar 30, 2026 +63
It is a crossover between “Forever Young” and the critically acclaimed biopic “Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping”.
63
wartopuk Mar 31, 2026 +2
It's a similar scenario to the recent Korean drama: heavenly ever after Where the old couple dies, and the husband decides to be a young man, but the wife, remembering that her husband told her she was always beautiful, decided to stay as an old woman.
2
thriftstoremando Mar 31, 2026 +1
Biopic? That was one of the documentaries of all time!
1
spudddly Mar 31, 2026 +1
In that case I just hope they have a scene where he has to sign some fan's d*** in the back of a limo, because that will never not produce the deepest of belly laughs from me.
1
midnightsugarplum Mar 30, 2026 +78
this sounds so cute but also kinda emotional 😭 I already know I’d watch this thinking it’s light and then end up overthinking everything after… like I once watched a random romcom and somehow it had me reflecting on my whole life at 2am. I’m way too easy to emotionally manipulate with movies
78
neuro_space_explorer Mar 30, 2026 +36
Is this going to be like a science fiction version of Harold and Maude?
36
FIRST_DATE_ANAL Mar 31, 2026 +6
Less creepy still
6
nowhereman136 Mar 30, 2026 +13
There's an episode of The Twilight Zone with a similar plot. An astronaut is going in a 40 year mission and will be frozen for the journey. He has to deal with leaving his girlfriend behind, who will age while he is away. The twist comes when it is revealed he didn't freeze himself. He aged 40 years so he could be the same age as her when he returned. Unfortunately, scientists on earth decided to freeze her for his return, so now she is young and he is old The Long Morrow
13
KnifeFed Mar 31, 2026 +3
> scientists on earth decided to freeze her for his return Ahh, the 60s.
3
numb3rb0y Mar 31, 2026 +2
Feels like a cursory analysis kinda destroys these stories. Like, he's not saving the world. He could just... not. If he really cared about her that much. The only way you could make him caring more about his career than his girlfriend more explicit would be if he outright said it. So, like, he doesn't love her enough to not leave her for 40 years, but he loves her enough to sabotage his mission and his physical health while still going on it? How does that work? Or with this - Samberg's character loves Bening's enough to do some grand romantic gesture but not enough to just not take part in a voluntary experiment that would seperate them for decades?

Delightfully Twilighty

That's My Boy would like a word. Iirc

Really like the concept. Wish Jean Smart got to stay on for it.
31
bwweryang Mar 30, 2026 +3
Either way I’m curious who they get to play the young version. Or if they digitally de-age.
3
MikeArrow Mar 30, 2026 +7
Elle Fanning could work, I can see the resemblance.
7
riegspsych325 Mar 30, 2026 +6
she would be good if Smart was still attached, too. I like this idea
6
maximian Mar 30, 2026 +1
I hope it’s just repurposed footage from The Grifters.

So ... Forever Young! Got it
3
peter-man-hello Mar 30, 2026 +6
That’s a pretty interesting premise
6
WTWIV Mar 31, 2026 +2
A premise already done quite a while ago (Forever Young)
2
Ok_Outcome_6213 Mar 31, 2026 +3
I've seen this movie. It's called [Forever Young](https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0104291/?ref_=nv_sr_srsg_0_tt_8_nm_0_in_0_q_forever%20y) and it stared Mel Gibson, Jamie Lee Curtis and a little Elijah Wood.
3
shf500 Mar 30, 2026 +5
Isn't this a remake of Forever Young? I don't know if this is a good thing (remaking a mediocre/bad movie with potential to be good) or not.
5
bwweryang Mar 30, 2026 +2
My mum loves that movie. Certified mum classic.
2
stvrkillr Mar 30, 2026 +2
This is a remake of something I remember watching in the 90s. Pretty sure the kid from Home Improvement was in it…

Palm Springs surprised the hell out of me so I’ll 10000% watch this

So like that Futurama episode where Fry unfreezes his GF but not really https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Cryonic_Woman

Don’t get hung up on the actors’ ages. It’s a movie, not a documentary
22
Big-Soup7013 Mar 30, 2026 +1
Let’s say he was frozen at 40 and she was 30ish.
1
ShaunTrek Mar 30, 2026
Just the idea of only being frozen for approximately 40 years is pretty funny to me. I'm in.

lol so the only way he would date an older woman is if he was frozen for forty years?

Is this an idea that’s already been done a lot? Cause I haven’t heard of anything with this plot
16

Maybe he thinks this is a rip off of Return of the Jedi 😂
3
Diseman81 Mar 30, 2026 +1
It’s pretty similar to the plot of Forever Young (1992).
1

Huh? This is an original idea and seems pretty intriguing. What exactly do you want? Lmao
