Any TV series that include muskets?

Posted by According_Weight_366

I've been very interested in Napoleonic history along with the Revolutionary War and I've seen movies like Waterloo, The Patriot, Zulu, and Ridley Scott's Napoleon but I've been wanting to watch a TV series similar. I am currently watching Turn: Washington's Spies and would like to watch things similar! Any recommendations?

Sharpe: Sharpe is a British television drama series starring Sean Bean as Richard Sharpe, a fictional British soldier in the Napoleonic Wars.

I've heard about it but haven't looked into it. Thanks!

Expect to recognise a few younger famous faces - Daniel Craig, Paul Bettany, Alexis Denisof (Wesley from Buffy), Brian Cox. The best ones follow the books (my favourites are Eagle, Enemy, Sword, Regiment and Waterloo), Sharpe's Gold was significantly rewritten for legal reasons as the original script couldn't be used after Paul McGann had to drop out as Sharpe, Sharpe's Justice was made up as filler and I'm not a fan, Peril and Challenge merge later written books. Cracking series overall

Technically Sharpe is in a rifle regiment, if you’re really particular about the technology.

But only the muskets fire three rounds of minute in a weather. That's soldiering. Rifles are considerably harder to load so they fire slowly but are much more accurate. Plus most of the people in the battles of the show are firing muskets, or at least old rifles disguised to look like muskets because it was cheaper.

I am a Brit who has never watched it, but heard good things. It is supposedly very good (for its age) I am now downloading as we speak - we can be Sharpe virgins together!

Black Sails is more about the age of pirates but it has plenty of muskets

I was just going to say black sails. I'm in my first watch, season 3. The show really is as good as everyone says

I loved that series - it had a few wobbles, but it was quite solid and actually got an ending!

>a few wobbles I would expect a few wobbles when you’re sailing the seas

Not necessarily Napoleonic, but Outlander takes place in 18th century Scotland and has a lot of representation of muskets and frock coats hehe. Also I've heard good things about Poldark and Black Sails.

It’s a movie, but master and commander is the best napoleonic thing ever made

I was thinking about watching this one, it seems interesting so I’ll definitely be watching it. Thanks

Added benefit of also being the best Star Trek movie.

Nope, Waterloo exists. As great as M&C is Waterloo blows it out of the water by it's sheer spectacle alone. They wanted realistically scaled army movements so they just hired the Soviet army as extras. There won't ever be a movie like that again.

The John Adams miniseries on HBO is very good.

It's good, but it's a historical biopic that focuses primarily on the politics, not the warfare. We get a few snapshots of the Revolutionary War, but no proper battle scenes.

The Simpsons episode "The PTA disbands" has a historical reenactment with the line "Those white flags are no match for our muskets!"

S10E21 (Monty Can’t Buy Me Love) sees Moe grab Skinner’s antique musket in anger, only to have it turn to dust.

If you haven't seen Hornblower, that would be a great place to start given your stated interests.

Not a series, but check out the 2004 Alamo movie - it's very under-rated. The lead actors are terrific, the action scenes authentic and the music is gorgeous. It reminds me a bit of the movie, the Last of Mohicans, which I guess you've watched but did not mention.

It’s Always Sunny and possibly Jack of All Trades

I haven’t heard about It’s Always Sunny but I have heard a little about Jack of All Trades. I’ll look more into them, thanks!

Davy Crockett and Daniel Boone. BTW, Zulu era wasn't muskets but Martini-Henry rifles

According_Weight_366 Mar 28, 2026 +2
Yeah I noticed that after doing some research, mb. Haven’t heard of Davy Crockett and Daniel Boone except from my dad so I’ll look into those
2
General-Skin6201 Mar 28, 2026 +1
Both series starred Fess Parker. Davy Crockett series, produced by Disney, show up edited as full-length movies on some of the retro channels.Daniel Boone ran for six seasons in the 1960s.

Im not too sure if it fits, but IIRC "Frontier" takes place around the end of 1700s and early 1800s [https://www.imdb.com/title/tt4686698](https://www.imdb.com/title/tt4686698)

not sure why I was downvoted, it is a great show and features muskets, perhaps the listnookards can tell me what I got wrong.

It looks interesting, I’ll add it to my list. Thanks

[Barkskins](https://www.imdb.com/title/tt9426272/). It was on the National Geographic channel, so most people never heard of it. I really enjoyed it and wished there were more seasons, since it was [based on a book](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Barkskins) that was multigenerational. The setting is New France in the New World during the 1690s, so you get muskets. A pretty good cast including David Thewlis, Marcia Gay Harden, Zahn McClarnon, Kaniehtiio Horn and Matthew Lillard.
