Anyone else wonder if working from home is worth missing out on social interactions?

Posted by PolyJAMorouschat

I love the freedom, but boy does it get lonely sometimes! What do you do to help scratch that itch for human connection during the hum drum boringness of the 8-5 hours?

Going out after work. you have no commute so you can use that time to go out

Definitely need to do that more! Sadly, most of the time after is spent cleaning house and taking care of the family.

Nah, reclaim your 30 min commute to & fro as an hour of sanity for you!

PolyJAMorouschat Apr 1, 2026 +1
I am about to "commute" my way to the pool!

Hell nah, work from home, get out when *you* want to go, explore things in that way. I love that type of life.

Clearly, I just need to try harder!! Hahahaha

Work from home all through. Can't stand the fake "HI's , good mornings, how was your weekend"

I love work from home! I don’t think I could go back to the office but i occasionally miss social interactions. I just spend an unhealthy amount of time on listnook instead!

You and me both!!!!

Depends on your work environment/the people you work with. Personally I could work from home and never miss a single soul in the office. I’d much prefer sleeping longer, and being more relaxed in my own environment and having more time for social life after work (no commute sucking away time)

PolyJAMorouschat Apr 1, 2026 +1
That definitely seems to be the consensus! I think I just need to get a better social life :-)

Haha you don’t realize how important that is until you become an adult. We weren’t meant to be alone for sure. Needing alone time is healthy but being lonely for sure sucks

I have a coworker who I do “body doubling” with. When we’re both just doing deep work, we get on a zoom and just silently do our work side by side (it’s usually not silent, we chat, but still).

PolyJAMorouschat Apr 1, 2026 +3
Seriously! This is the best advice I’ve gotten yet, I love it!

lesdeuxchatons Apr 1, 2026 +2
I can’t remember what it’s called, but there’s also a website for it if your coworkers won’t do it lol. I’m not sure if it’s free but it just connects you with a random person doing the same thing

PolyJAMorouschat Apr 1, 2026 +2
Looking that up!

I work hybrid and, while I like my job and coworkers, I'd rather just wfh 5 days a week. I am a homebody though with hobbies that connect me with people online, so that may be part of why I'd be fine wfh fulltime.

Please, please please hobby suggestions!

I love working from home. I love my job, my boss is great, my coworkers are cool, as far as I know - I hardly ever have to talk to them. I’m the only designer at my company, so I had been kind of bummed about having no one to talk to about the specifics of my work… however, we are now taking on interns, so I have three young people to mentor in design and it’s been scratching that itch for me. I was a retail manager for 20 years, and when I tell you I worked with some of the most insane people you could possibly imagine gaining employment, it is not exaggeration. I do not want to have to listen to a coworker tell me about how they wore diapers to a furry convention, or how their mom is making them pay rent because they’re turning 50 and she’s finally had it, or to be able to smell someone coming before I see them. I do not need to know anything about my coworkers and I will like them better that way.

PolyJAMorouschat Apr 1, 2026 +2
I think when I was in the office, I would probably have been the one annoying you with those hahaha
2
murugieh Apr 1, 2026 +1
😅😅 maybe, which also means I am forced to reciprocate
1
PolyJAMorouschat Apr 1, 2026 +2
And here you are... still doing it!! So, how the hell was your weekend Murugieh? HAHAHAHA
2
murugieh Apr 1, 2026 +1
Hahaha I hear you, it was great, how was yours ?
1
PolyJAMorouschat Apr 1, 2026 +2
A lot more relaxing a lot less emailing... Work (and adulting to be quite frank) is highly overrated.
2
murugieh Apr 1, 2026 +1
Adulting is one big scam hehe I like to say, as much as it has its good sides.
1
PolyJAMorouschat Apr 1, 2026 +2
I second that motion! I’m going back to required nap time, someone else cooking all my food, and my own personal taxi driver wherever I want to go!
2
murugieh Apr 1, 2026 +1
That is my dream, like being on the passenger seat, ... nap time as an adult is like therapy sessions haha & home made food , just 👌🏾
1
PolyJAMorouschat Apr 1, 2026 +2
Now the biggest and most important question of all. Couch, nap, or bed nap?
2
murugieh Apr 1, 2026 +1
Haha is my name that obvious? Listnook should consider giving us options of changing names btw, hehe I was so naive when I set up my account
1
PolyJAMorouschat Apr 1, 2026 +1
You missed a golden opportunity there! What should it be??
1
murugieh Apr 1, 2026 +1
Haha I haven't given it much thought actually , now that the chance is non existent
1
PolyJAMorouschat Apr 1, 2026 +1
Are you trying to tell me you’re not up for the challenge?
1
murugieh Apr 1, 2026 +1
Haha perhaps I would go with "The_breed",
1
PolyJAMorouschat Apr 1, 2026 +1
Booh ya!

happy--muffin Apr 1, 2026 +1
I wait in line at the grocery store instead of using the self checkout line so I can say hi to the cashier.
1
PolyJAMorouschat Apr 1, 2026 +1
Look at you thinking outside the box!! I may just have to saunter over to the next chatty cashier I see! :-)
1
JamesonThibodeaux Apr 1, 2026 +1
I need to get out more often as well. Any ideas.?
1
PolyJAMorouschat Apr 1, 2026 +1
So far we have: Go out after work... and chat with the cashiers! I'm thinking... Some sort of Bingo with the old farts... or maybe find a local quiz night happening somewhere local?
1
JamesonThibodeaux Apr 1, 2026 +1
I’m 45, im not trying to ever categorize like that. I work out everyday, kayak often, I do a lot, just by myself.
1
PolyJAMorouschat Apr 1, 2026 +1
No offense intended... I'm 48 :-)
1
JamesonThibodeaux Apr 1, 2026 +1
Oh, we’re on the same level here. I need more social interaction!
1
Sage_Planter Apr 1, 2026 +1
I attend regular events at my local library! It's great.
1
PolyJAMorouschat Apr 1, 2026 +1
Fun!! Will check mine out
1
Made_Human_Music Apr 1, 2026 +1
I think it depends on the person. I’m the kind of person who, if not forced to interact with people socially never will so for me being an an office helps a lot.
1
PolyJAMorouschat Apr 1, 2026 +1
I think it's the random drive by conversations I miss. But then again, would they irritate me if I was working?? Maybe!
1
NoRestForTheWitty Apr 1, 2026 +1
Gym, walk the dogs, or laundry. I’m at my eye dr. ATM.
1
PolyJAMorouschat Apr 1, 2026 +1
Thats it… i’m telling my husband you told me to get a dog!

m00nf1r3 Apr 1, 2026 +1
Browse listnook lol. I'm also in several discord servers.

PolyJAMorouschat Apr 1, 2026 +1
That is what I am doing here hahahaha New to it though! This has been fun and entertaining for sure :-)

I only experienced working from home once but it was when I was living with my parents and then my sister and her kids had to move in. It sucked. During one of my lunch breaks I was going to get a quick meal and a pair of jehovah witness showed up 🤦‍♀️
1
PolyJAMorouschat Apr 1, 2026 +1
They could be fun to mess with though!!
1
True_Lock_4530 Apr 1, 2026 +1
I wish I could work from home, most days I have a 2-3 hour drive for work, it can be very tiring
1
PolyJAMorouschat Apr 1, 2026 +1
That is brutal! At least you can use that time to decompress and listen to good music or an audiobook.
1
True_Lock_4530 Apr 1, 2026 +1
I generally listen to podcasts, that does help to chill out.
1
Pandering_Panda7879 Apr 1, 2026 +1
Heavily depends on the people you work with and the work culture in your office. Right now I'm at a job where I enjoy the company of the people around me, so I don't mind going to the office three out of five days a week. But that's also highly dependable on three people. If they leave, there would be no reason for me to go to the office. I also had other jobs where I tolerated the people around me, we chatted and all that, but I also didn't miss them. If these were 100% remote I wouldn't mind at all - and didn't during COVID.
1
PolyJAMorouschat Apr 1, 2026 +1
I do have to agree to that, I guess I have been very blessed to always be surrounded by interesting co-workers!
1
tryin_to_chill Apr 1, 2026 +1
I would rather make money than worrying about someone to talk to. If that's the case, whoever I talk to that day would be me getting paid for it.
1
PolyJAMorouschat Apr 1, 2026 +1
I hear that!
1
AncientDamage7674 Apr 1, 2026 +1
When I’m working from home I don’t do 8-5. I do a small 7-9 & go to the gym. It’s quieter & more casual. I might have a coffee break with a friend or nurse one at a cafe in the avo. Usually I roll hard & fast cos I have no distractions tho. Depends on your work & personality maybe
1
PolyJAMorouschat Apr 1, 2026 +1
Love this!
1
Catsareintroverts Apr 1, 2026 +1
Yes. Yes it’s worth missing out on the social interaction. The peace of mind I have without the company gossip, politics and backstabbing is very much worth it.

Lopsided-Public8205 Apr 1, 2026 +1
I did full remote for 15 years then moved to a hybrid role recently. It did feel isolated at times, but going back the office in 2026 isn't any better. We all sit at our desks talking on Teams and looking at Figjam. We don't actually work together around a whiteboard like the old days. If you do try to have a real conversation, both people's phones are going crazy with someone online looking for you. Lunch occasionally, if there isn't a 12pm meeting. Meh. Office work, or at least IT/Tech, is just permanently broken.
