37f in Midwest US. Started the week off good, having fun playing with the dogs (8yo pit bull and 7 month old hound mix) and having coffee on my uncle’s huge deck in the morning with a blanket. It’s been raining the last couple days tho so no playing outside or going for walks. I’ve been playing with the pups inside, reading, and watching tv but I think I’m just missing some human interaction. My friends work weird hours so it’s hit or miss with conversations with them. I like animals (obviously), reading, painting, hiking. I have a dog (weird little terrier mix) and a snake (Kenyan sand boa), myself. Idk. What are you up to today? Plans for the weekend? What are you watching/reading? Feel free to comment or DM.
Middle-of-nowhere dog sitting honestly sounds like introvert summer camp. If the dog is good company, you’re already ahead of most group chats.

Wish I had something interesting to share with you. I, too, would appreciate some human interaction and you sound nice. Am 81f, married but long for female friendship. Reading is my all time favorite thing but I used to paint and sculpt. Seems I’ve misplaced my mojo, meaning I’m now lazy but not pleased about it!
Your uncle’s place sounds so pleasant with the dogs and all. Hope you connect with some interesting people and maybe make new friends.😎

What sort of things did you sculpt? I’ve always wanted to try it but I think the texture of the clay would bother me. Are you reading anything right now? What are some of your favorite books?

When if your birthday? I'm a 62F also living in the midwest. My oldest child will be turning 38 next month. Most days I don't feel old enough to have a child that old, other days I feel that old plus some. Sadly, I have very little interaction with my children. Enjoy your time in what sounds like a very idyllic location, and happy early birthday.

Aw. I love pitties and my dog was a wonderful lab/hound mix. The best!
I work from home. I’m trying to have better WLB but I end up pretty locked into work 9-5.
Then the electricity went out while I was making dinner so I lit a bunch of candles. It was out for an hour and just came back.
Enjoy those dogs!

I'm in New England. I love the Midwest. I have a lot of friends all over out there and try to make a road trip every few months - but it's been longer than usual. I'm hoping to get back out there soon but I should have gone before gas went up. Oh well!
Those dogs look sweet. Do you have your dog with you too?

Where do you usually go on your trips? I’m in Wisconsin. I moved here from Arizona and California before that. The weather here is wild! I’m still not used to it after many years. I really do like it here though. People are like… nice? I lived in CA for years in the same place and never said a word to my neighbors or the mail person. Now I know my neighbors by name and the time my mail man brings the mail and he hands it to me directly and we chat a bit on my days off. Crazy.
No, I did not bring my dog. He’s terrified of dogs. He’s a little guy (20lbs) and even small dogs scare him. He adores cats though, which I found odd. He does have a best friend, Curly, who lives a few blocks over. Curly is some sort of mini poodle mix, I think? She’s older so she’s super calm. Wally (my dog) would be out of his mind with anxiety and fear if he was here with these guys.

I lived in a similar rural environment in my early teens and didn't really like it a lot. Meanwhile, things have changed a bit and I'd be happy to talk to the mail man (or woman) from time to time :o)

Oh, goodness. I hope your toe is okay. Sending good vibes!
Hm. It maybe doesn’t count as a thing or really what you mean, but it meant a lot to me. When I was 12yo I moved from North Carolina to California and started middle school there. I was absolutely distraught. I had no friends. Strange place. I went through the usual symptoms of depression and put on a lot of weight. We had to run the mile every week and I was always the last one in and constantly got made fun of for it. I wasn’t just the weird, new kid. I was the slow fat one too. I decided halfway through the year that I wasn’t going to let them make fun of me anymore. I started running. Like really trying. I got faster, lost weight. At the end of the year, we had a fundraiser race. I got a medal for second place. And I found something that I actually enjoyed?? I did cross country through high school and college. I still have that medal in a shoebox in my closet.

Hi. Hope you’re doing well. Thanks for sharing the pics of the pups. Nala and Thorson look like sweet company.
I can share a bit about myself, but I don’t have anything exceedingly interesting going on. Read on at your own peril of boredom. Lol
I’m a 53f living in the Southwest US. I live with my husband of 25 years (our anniversary is in just a couple of weeks!) and our two pups, a 5 yr old German shepherd that we’ve had since she was a small puppy and a 3 yr old golden doodle that we adopted from my husband’s mom when she moved into a no dogs retirement neighborhood. They are both sweet company. The doodle is a big cuddle bunny. The shepherd gives the occasional cuddle but after a few minutes moves to where she can enjoy her own space. Lol
I occasionally play Lord of the Rings online with my sister 73f who lives across the country in the Deep South. Hoping to get back to playing with her more often.
I used to do art, mostly sketching and some oil pastels. I’ve toyed with the idea of starting up again and maybe trying painting but I haven’t actually done anything about it yet. 🙄
I enjoy a variety of different genres in books, TV shows and movies, but fantasy and sci-fi have always had a special place in my heart. What genres do you like?
Although I spent far too many years neglecting my once favorite pastime of reading for pleasure, I have been able to do some more reading lately. The most recent was the novel Hamnet, which I really enjoyed and would highly recommend, and I have just started rereading Seamus Heaney’s translation of Beowulf, which has spent decades gathering dust in my bookcase. I’m currently reading Heaney’s introduction and hoping that I don’t get distracted and neglect to read the whole poem.
I watch a lot of TV and movies. Probably too much. Just finished the second season of Paradise and watched an episode of the new Scrubs with my husband during his lunch break. Happily, he works from home, so he can just walk downstairs from his office to get some lunch and hang out for a while. What shows or movies are you watching? Or what pops into your mind as favorites?
Hope you get to have some conversations with people you get along well with. You seem like a great person. Thanks for reaching out for that human interaction. I need to do that more often as well. Lol
Have a great weekend!

You actually sound really cool! Where about in the southwest? I’ve lived in Arizona and Texas. Arizona was cool but I did not like Texas. That’s a big age gap for you and your sister! My sister and I are a year and 11 months apart. What is that like? I don’t have kids but she has three (10, 14, 18) and they’re always coming over. My sister and I aren’t very close but the kids and I are super tight. I hope you reach out to your sister and play more!
I was big into sketching and painting when I was younger (usually watercolor) and just last week I bought some paint by number kits for me and the girls because I wanted to get back into art and encourage no screen time with them. It was so much fun! We all loved it! I encourage you to check them out if you want to ease into painting again 🙂
Hamnet! That’s on my TBR. I’m a general fiction person and I read a lot of queer novels, but I do enjoy sci-fi or sciencey things in general. I’ve been really getting into horror tho. Books that make my stomach turn a little or keep me up at night. It Rides A Pale Horse by Andy Marino and Tender Is The Flesh by Augustina Bazterricca are both good. Great endings.
I’m happy to chat any time!

Sure - Aussie 51m retired here, living in the tropics, sometimes feels like the only people I speak to are retail people when I buy stuff lol.
Is your sand boa the one with the goofy eyes (upwards facing?).
Have a few dogs myself (Goldens and Bull Arab) they're great, but trying at times (high energy bar one Golden who is a couch potato who loves A/C and naps).
Whats your preferred genre of book? I like Sci-fi, fantasy, occasional spy/mystery one and the odd historical romance/adventure but also love history and military stuff.

The one that looks like a child’s drawing? 😂 yes, she’s a [doofy looking bugger](https://imgur.com/a/IUxOCqw). What’s it like down under? Are the stories true?? I like general fiction. Mostly pick books based on the cover. (I know, I know…) I do like sci-fi or anything sciencey too tho. I read my first Agatha Christie novel not too long ago and I think I will need to explore that more. I’ve been getting into horror too. My eldest niece has started reading a lot all of a sudden (woo!!!) and has been giving me some YA novels that she’s liked so we can discuss them together so that’s been fun. I’m really into anything that gives me pictures in my head and keeps me thinking about it after I have to put it down.

Lol, cute (for a snake).
I guess it depends on what stories as to Wether they are true or not lol. I love living in Australia but it's got problems like everywhere (cost of living is insane and being in "far north " everything costs even more). Occasional cyclone but luckily nothing major damage wise where I live. Weather is pretty much always sunny or sunny with tropical rain so a true love of warm weather is needed.
I loved Stephen King for horror and read everything he published for ages, but haven't read much l (horror) lately.
Some China Mievile (spelling of surname might be off) novels are pretty good reading recently. Guess it's under sci fi and fantasy/dystopia.

What’s the average temp where you live? Does it vary much by season? I don’t think I could handle tropical weather.
I loved a lot of Stephen King books when I was in high school. I would stay up all night reading them and fall asleep in class the next day. I’ve tried reading some of his books now and wasn’t really feeling them. I’ve tried some older and newer ones. Idk. I guess our tastes change?
Hmm. Googled him and his books sound really cool. On to the TBR list! Thanks!

Average is 30C most days, chilly is anything below 20C, We just have "The wet" and "The dry" for our seasons with the dry being majority. Doesn't really get low unless we have a storm coming through. What about where you are, what is the temp like? I used to live in Melbourne and didn't mind it (lot colder very south of the mainland) but once I adapted to the tropics, I find the cold painful now. I never intended to end up living here but now I am I love it.
Same for SK (as I read him a lot more when younger). TBH my current reading is more sci-fi/fantasy or dystopian and history or Alt history, rather than horror.
I hope you enjoy the China Meivile books. I actually think horror is very hard to write for an older audience especially if supernatural themed, just more experience and knowledge in the audience makes selling a premise a more skillful task. Horror with pure human elements seems more relatable.
Whats a current tv series you like?
1
helmetcatApr 3, 2026
+2
Oh, that’s toasty for a regular temp! We have stupid weather here. During summer, anywhere from the 80-90s F. I think last year it actually got into the 100s F. During winter, which is like half the year, it can get down to -30s F with windchill. You end up praying for snow because that means it will be warm(er) again but then you get 10 inches and hate yourself for your poor decisions.
I finally gave in to everyone I know and the general public and started watching The Pitt. I’m almost done with season 1. I don’t like to watch medical dramas because they give me anxiety but this one seems pretty… chill? Like yeah, there’s BIG moments, but there’s not a lot of loud sounds or shouting? I kinda like it. I’ve been rewatching Abbott Elementary too. Love this show. It’s so cute and funny and all the characters are great. Real good show to just relax and laugh with. Jacob always makes me laugh but Mister Johnson is the star of the show.

I like the "idea" of snow and snow covered forest always looks so inviting but I am sure it sucks a lot of the time. Will check out the Pitt, is Abbott elementary like the inbetweeners?
1
helmetcatApr 3, 2026
+2
Shoveling it all sucks the most but it is very pretty. And it gets so quiet and still when it’s coming down. Very peaceful. No no, not like the inbetweeners, tho that’s a really good show as well. It’s mostly about the teachers and how they deal with an underfunded school in a low income inner city district. Obviously a lot of it deals with how they interact with the young kids but a lot of it takes place in the teachers lounge or the office. It’s really more about the adults.

Sounds nice (the quiet after snow) whenever I have been camping or working in bushland, even when there's no one but me, there was always noise of some sort. Dead silence mean someone or thing is near to my caveman brain lol, would take some getting used to
I like my comfort to much to do any more scrub camping though.
Will give the elementary show a watch as well. My father taught for a little while (in one of our more notorious prisons, pentridge) when I was younger.
Shovelling at least gets you active??
Trying to find a bright side lol.
Spent the last week digging out our storm water drainage (mud from run-off in the wet was clogging the city drain) so i know its probably hard work.
Decided to have a break from daily routine today and skipped the dog walk, now getting sad eyes from 2 directions, the 3rd doesn't care, I am sure she only comes out of FOMO. Been a month or more since they last had a day off.

Im currently trying to help my new cat and my dog acclimate to each other. My friend moved out of state over the weekend and I took in one of her sweet outside cats named Mama. Mama is absolutely sweet, but im allergic and trying my best to give her plenty of attention. My dog is pretty anxious with Mama is the house, she was swatted at for getting to close and hid under the bed for a few hours or close by my side coping and shaking a bit, she is 55lbs of anxiety now. Haha. Its only been a few days, but they're doing really good, quick smells and touches then giving space again.
Its not warm enough in the PNW for morning coffee outside yet, but im absolutely looking forward to it. Hopefully a few more weeks. Had dinner outside in a little sunny spot left in my yard. You mentioned walking, are there any good trails near you? Any cool sights that you go look at?

Oh, gosh. Introducing new pets is very stressful! Especially when you’re allergic! I’m allergic to basically anything with fur but I’ve had cats and dogs since I’ve been an adult. I take two allergy pills a day. It’s worth it for me tho. Maybe Mama is scared about being inside too? I fostered a dog from Afghanistan that a US soldier flew home to adopt after his deployment and I don’t think that boy had ever been in a house before. Everything scared him, especially doors. On his first day in the house he fell down the basement stairs and broke a side table and a chair. Maybe she’s just very overwhelmed with her new circumstances. I’m sure puppy is having a hard time adjusting too. I hope they find peace together and you all live in a happy home soon!
I live along the Appalachian trail so there’s lots of good walking and hiking spots nearby. My favorite that’s close is Gibraltar Rock. Not a very difficult climb, but it goes UP! You can see so far and there’s usually a lot of eagles and hawks flying around, depending on the time of year. I like to go and sit at the very top and just watch. It’s awesome seeing the kids that come and get their first glimpse of a bald eagle too!

Thats so sweet you foster the soldiers dog. Such a huge change for a dog, no doubt it was overwhelming for a while. Hope they were able to settle in and feel safe indoors. Let mama cat explore the living room tonight and she was on everything. Never being inside she got in my windows almost knocking plants over and walk on top of fish tank. It was chaotic to say the least. Mama cat and my dog Moxie did really good, no growling or aggressive. Was a good interaction overall. Ive always wanted to make over to that side of the country and see all the natural sights. Sounds lovely. I live about an hour from the coast and love to go out hiking along the rocky shores and hunt for cool shells and rocks. Last time I was at the coast I saw a large flock of pelicans for the first time, loved it.

Lol! Cats will be cats. I’m glad you had a good interaction with them today!! Hopefully they will come to be good friends! Sometimes it does just take time 🙂 I used to live on the coast in California and loved searching for sand dollars and coral. Watching the dolphins and seals. Or, if you’re lucky, a whale swimming by during migration. Very cool. Pelicans freak me out. Like nothing about them makes sense lol We have cranes, egrets, and heron where I am now. They also weird me out but mostly because they seem so… domesticated? That’s probably not the right word. They just walk around like they own the place. Like in neighborhoods. It’s weird.

Thanks for the kind words. 😊 I live in Southern California in a neighborhood kind of out in the country but only about 35 minutes from the city and coast.
It’s funny. My oldest sister and I have stayed the closest. She stuck around as I was growing up, while our other sister and our brother went off and did their own thing. The age gap between us has never really interfered with our getting along well and enjoying each other’s company, so we have a lot of fun when we do stuff together like playing LOTRO., so yeah, we want to get back to doing that. We actually talk on the phone pretty much every day though, so we do stay in touch even when we don’t play.
Your project with your sister’s kids sounds fun. It’s great that you guys are close.
Since you’re getting into horror fiction, have you tried Stephen King? His short stories and novels are great. Another thriller/horror author I’ve enjoyed is Dean Koontz. He’s a little more merciful than Stephen King in terms of knocking off main characters. Lol. My favorite book of his is definitely Watchers. No spoilers, but it features a very cool dog. 🐕 😀

That’s so nice that you have such a good connection with your sister. My mom and my aunt talk everyday, on the phone or FaceTime. I wish I had that kind of relationship with my sister. It’s just the two of us. We’ve never been at ends but we’ve just never really clicked either. We’re very different people. It’s funny tho, because I think her girls have more in common with me than her. But I stayed (or moved back) home when she had all three of them and watched them so she could work. The eldest is 18 and I was just out of high school when she was born. She went to quite a few college classes with me! She was a good baby tho. I read to them constantly from day one and they had crayons in their hands as soon as they could hold them. Instrumental music during nap time. They’re all artists now, in some form. They’re the best thing that’s ever happened to me.
I used to read a lot of Stephen King when I was in high school and loved him but I’ve picked up some books of his lately and DNFed them. I tried IT and The Stand. Didn’t like them. They felt cluttered. I did like his short story, Elevation, tho. That was cute. I tried my first Dean Koontz that I got at a free library down the road called Intensity but I didn’t like the writing. I sometimes feel particular about how some men write women’s narratives and that one didn’t sit well with me. I’ll try Watchers tho! Can’t deny a cool dog! 😎
