Anything wrong withThe boys audio?

Posted by Grouchy_Egg1748

Not any spoilers and don’t spoil me please I’m only on season 2! So I started watching the boys recently while I wait for a new invincible season. And I don’t know if it’s Amazon or if it’s a known issue with the boys. But I’ve noticed this very small thing with the audio where sometimes it’ll be very quiet and then turn up to a louder volume. Is this a normal thing with the boys? Or is this just an issue with prime video on this series specifically?

Yes, it's an issue. Not only with the boys, but with TV and movies in general. Mixing is done with very specific audio setups in mind, ones which are not reflective for the vast majority of viewing experiences. Depending on what source you use, *almost half* of American audiences now use subtitles. A lot of listnookors pretend it's not a problem and say you should upgrade your sound system, but the issue clearly exists.

I find Dana’s dialogue in the Pitt almost like it’s garbled

I’m have a decent surround system connected to an AVR. I’ve calibrated it using the microphone that came with the AVR. I still use subtitles with everything as dialogue is still inaudible in most movies and TV shows - both streamed and Blu Ray. At this point I think the specific audio setup that things are mixed for is cinema and only cinema with no changes made when releasing to home media.

Assuming it’s not a Sonos or Bose or similar average-consumer-friendly nice audio brands? While they aren’t the best value the latest models offer great software-enabled speech enhancement modes that are a decent solution for typical shows and movies with mostly dialogue.

Yamaha AVR, Mission centre speaker + 4x tower speakers and a Miller and Kreisel subwoofer. The AVR has all manner of EQ options to simulate different things but dialogue is almost always quiet.

Yeah the speech mode on the latest Sonos for example is a mixture of EQ but also uses some AI to isolate the voice with their proprietary tech. Refer https://tech-blog.sonos.com/posts/arc-ultra-speech-enhancement-announcing-a-step-change-in-speech-enhancement-using-ai/?utm_source=chatgpt.com If anyone does consider Sonos but worried about their controversy of software not supporting old hardware…get it from Costco and it has their lifetime return policy

I’m just glad I wasn’t going crazy. Because I personally watch shows on my pc with earbuds in. Not too sure what the mixing was intended for

A deeper version of the story is production companies are cheaping out on sound mixing and mastering while also wanting to maintain the latest and greatest bragging rights.  They went to support the fanciest setups but don't spend extra to also mix a good quality plain stereo, like they used to. Netflix doesn't even give the option of switching stereo/surround anymore; you get what you get (and you'll like it!) Movies aren't getting remixed for home release, so we get a hack job of the theater audio.  C****. Result is we can't hear shit when it was perfectly fine for over half a century.

How do so many people have this problem? I keep seeing it here.
