The author has another book (not the same series), Recursion. Reread both multiple times. Recursion is better overall IMO. What I'm saying is, if you liked Dark Matter, grab the book/audiobook for Recursion.

I liked Dark Matter more than Recursion. Both were awesome though. Hope Recursion gets made into a show. Upgrade was my least favorite though. Started strong but fell apart at the end.

Bill_Sandwich Apr 7, 2026 +4
I don't disagree but of the three, I honestly think Upgrade might be the easiest to adapt into a movie/show.
4
mmatt0904 Apr 7, 2026 +1
Very fair. It’s like a slight sci-fi thriller mixed with Limitless. Good premise to make a show and flesh out more
1
IceWook Apr 7, 2026 +6
Interesting. How you felt about Upgrade is how I felt about Dark Matter. It was a good idea that sort of faltered as he finished it. Recursion was my personal favourite. Though I don’t fault you for disagreeing!
6
mmatt0904 Apr 7, 2026 +6
Both were really cool. I just remember that I couldn’t put down the last 100 pages of Dark Matter and it got me back into reading. When he logs into the computer and sees like 50 other Jasons,  I was locked in
6
snapwack Apr 8, 2026
I read Recursion first and going from that to Dark Matter felt like a downgrade, personally. The protagonist made a bunch of iffy decisions like >!cheating on his wife with an alternate version of her; and fighting his doppelgängers in the end to decide who gets to “keep” the family as if they’re property!<. The narration didn’t seem to have the self-awareness to frame these actions as questionable, and it didn’t feel like the protagonist underwent a proper character arc so much as a series of ordeals. Recursion felt a lot more polished to me

FirmShare5 Apr 7, 2026 +3
I can’t quite remember exactly but I’m pretty sure I saw a while back that Shonda Rhimes is producing a Recursion series/show
3
NinjaSimone Apr 7, 2026 +8
That's correct. Shonda Rhimes' production company has held the option on Recursion for more than seven years now, so I'm losing faith.
8
mdavis360 Apr 7, 2026 +2
That was so long ago and there hasn’t been any news on it in very long time.
2
ratatouillethot Apr 7, 2026 +3
recursion had me crying by the end. wasn't expecting that! immediately picked up dark matter
3
TheeMotionOfTheOcean Apr 7, 2026 +1
He also had a third book called Upgrade which came out a few years ago. Not quite as good as the other two, but still a good read
1
crasherdgrate Apr 7, 2026 +167
So, this show is going beyond the book? I haven’t read Recursion, so can anyone help me understand if it is in any way related to?
167
Murky-Insect-7556 Apr 7, 2026 +211
Blake Crouch is the showrunner, and he’s said that this season and future seasons will be completely original material. So it’s basically a sequel to the book. It has nothing to do with Recursion.
211
crasherdgrate Apr 7, 2026 +23
Oh yeah, I forgot Blake Crouch is involved.
23
ColonelQuaraitch Apr 7, 2026 +23
What about Barty Crouch… JUNIOR????
23
frusciante231 Apr 7, 2026 +6
Ohhh I didn’t know that. I really liked the novel and didn’t know he was involved.
6
suppadelicious Apr 7, 2026 +10
I just finished the book and loved it. Started the show this weekend so I'm really excited about this.
10
yzsKPC Apr 8, 2026 +3
Actually didn't know he was involved. I'll stick around them and see what's up. Season 1 was good enough. Love the book.
3
ZERV4N Apr 7, 2026 -7
I'm sure TV writers will offer as detailed and layered a story as one born out of inspiration and crafted over years with relentless editing and revision by a singular vision.
-7
Alc2005 Apr 8, 2026 +9
Blake Crouch is the original author, and he’s a damn good author of that
9
TheRealMrNarwhal Apr 7, 2026 +42
Yep seems like they'll go beyond the book. It has no connection to Recursion. Although I highly recommend reading it; it's fantastic and has a similar vibe
42
crasherdgrate Apr 7, 2026 +5
Cool. Will do. Thanks
5
doublesimoniz Apr 8, 2026 +2
Upgrade is pretty good too.  A cool idea.
2
TARS1986 Apr 7, 2026 +5
I felt a little letdown by Recurssion. It was entertaining, but the characters felt so flat.
5
Ritsler Apr 7, 2026 +15
I’ve read a little Blake Crouch (Recursion, Wayward Pines) and his weakness seems to be around characters. He can come up with really cool scenarios and concepts, but the characters are at the bottom rung of his ladder most of the time and tend to just be devices for the story. He seems to be suited to more of a screenplay format, so maybe his other adapted projects, like if Recursion gets adapted, will be more well-rounded.
15
Faile-Bashere Apr 7, 2026 +3
He did Wayward Pins too? Loved the concept of that story!! I thought the pilot was great too.
3
Richmond43 Apr 7, 2026 +3
Yup, it’s a trilogy of books. Good beach read!
3
tvfeet Apr 7, 2026 +2
On,y the first season. Season 2 is entirely new and he didn’t write it (just exec. producer.) S1 was amazing but S2 was terrible and it’s why he’s retained creative control of Dark Matter.
2
sylanar Apr 14, 2026 +1
I loved the wayward pines books! They were so good! Hated the show though, the characters, pacing, setting, everything just felt really off.
1
Faile-Bashere Apr 14, 2026 +1
I really like the pilot, because I remember them cutting the episode in a way that made you think that the husband’s storyline and the wife’s storyline were happening at the same time… But the husband had already been “transported” to the future while the wife’s storyline was still happening in the present. Which set up a really great reveal at the end of the episode.
1
mdavis360 Apr 7, 2026 +12
I just finished Recursion last month and it made me supremely uncomfortable as everything kept escalating. Total existential dread nightmare fuel.
12
Mwahaha_790 Apr 8, 2026 +1
I loved Dark Matter the book – *hated* Recursion.
1
TARS1986 Apr 8, 2026 +1
Ooo…can you expand on this? For me the problem with Recursion was as like I said…super flat characters. I cared not one bit for them. Very hard to believe in them. I’m in the middle of reading the Expanse series of books, and it’s just such a night and day difference between character depth between these books. Does Dark Matter at least have depth in their characters?
1
Hue_Honey Apr 8, 2026 +1
Recursion also had some major plot discrepancies
1
tvfeet Apr 7, 2026 +1
Had the same reaction for Dark Matter after I read it after reading Recursion. Didn’t fine DM anywhere near as compelling as Recursion.
1
The_Wattsatron Apr 7, 2026 +3
Recursion is so good. One of the coolest takes on >!time travel!< I think I've ever seen.
3
soonerfreak Apr 8, 2026 +2
My favorite book using that, I recommend to anyone who likes scifi.
2
beatlebill Apr 7, 2026 +4
You mean >!alternate universes!
4
The_Wattsatron Apr 7, 2026 +2
>!Uh, no? I mean time travel. I understand alternate timelines are involved but the time travel is the part that I enjoyed.!<
2
beatlebill Apr 7, 2026 +2
Sorry. I misread that the context was Dark Matter. You’re 100% correct.
2
EatsRats Apr 7, 2026 +3
Recursion isn’t tied to Dark Matter. I would highly recommend that book though :)
3
No-Sherbert-9857 Apr 7, 2026 +3
Would you recommend it to someone who loves sci fi movies/shows but is still new to reading sci fi?
3
scatteredElement Apr 7, 2026 +6
I’m not the guy you asked, but yeah I think so.
6
No-Sherbert-9857 Apr 7, 2026 +4
I appreciate it. I’ve always steered towards non fiction but I’ve been wanting to read more fiction and sci fi so I think I’ll give this one a shot.
4
FantasticTony Apr 8, 2026 +1
Yes. Both Dark Matter and Recursion are fun sci-fi books which take pretty basic concepts in the space and do some really interesting twists on them. For both books I found myself thinking that the last act problems were really unique in a way that there wasn’t an easy solution but still nailed the landing. I also recommend Upgrade by him, it’s not as great but still a fun sci-fi book which does some unique stuff
1
soonerfreak Apr 8, 2026 +1
Another yes, I loved it.
1
Default_Sock_Issue Apr 7, 2026 +2
Not at all like the book
2
daninlionzden Apr 8, 2026 +2
Recursion was great! High recommend
2
apf6 Apr 7, 2026 +1
Yeah season 1 showed the whole book, and also had some added perspectives/scenes that weren’t in the book, so they’ve already been incorporating some original content.
1
McChillbone Apr 7, 2026 +1
You could see how it could extended. The book basically ends pretty open ended and there are what appears to be countless parallel universes.
1
DarthRiznat Apr 7, 2026 +36
Wait a minute.... I thought it ended with season 1...
36
BitterBubblegum Apr 7, 2026 +55
We live in the parallel universe where the story continues
55
Murky-Insect-7556 Apr 7, 2026 +15
lol that was similar to Apple’s announcement on [Twitter](https://x.com/appletv/status/1824491353633591656?s=46&t=MHUKMI8ASp-deq3cwYBxvg) when they renewed it for s2.
15
kenncann Apr 7, 2026 +7
Yeah it ended with a cliffhanger epilogue
7
mmatt0904 Apr 7, 2026 +14
It did. This is now going off book. There is no source material for this second season.
14
phonologotron Apr 7, 2026 +23
Except Blake Crouch is the show runner so I’m not too worried.
23
Devilofchaos108070 Apr 7, 2026 +19
Finally. Jesus it’s been forever. Curious how it’ll go. Loved the first season
19
tifosiv122 Apr 7, 2026 +43
This show blew me away - I cannot wait for the 2nd season.
43
Mister_Brevity Apr 7, 2026 +3
I haven't had a dedicated block of time yet - sounds like it's worth it? Is there any existing show it's similar to just for setting expectations? Thanks for any input. Less and less free time so I have to get more and more picky with TV shows :)
3
Mataelio Apr 7, 2026 +1
It’s extremely worth it, but I don’t know if there is another show to compare it to.
1
Mister_Brevity Apr 7, 2026 +1
That’s fair, apples picked up some properties that are kinda tough to compare. I wish they’d get their hands on the expanse and finish the show with apples theatrical vibe.
1
WhiskyTheEmperor Apr 8, 2026 +1
Is it anything like 12 monkeys (the tv show) ?
1
Locutus747 Apr 9, 2026 +1
I mean if you liked 12 monkeys you may like this because they are both scifi stories, but they aren't the same. I loved both. You can read a basic synopsis for Dark Matter, but it's about the existence of different universes/realities and doesn't involve time travel (at least yet). I don't think this is a major spoiler since its the premise of the show, but the character from one reality traps another version of himself in a different universe so he can live the life he never had. The show is about the protagonist trying to get back to his universe/his wife.
1
tifosiv122 Apr 7, 2026 +1
So I wouldn't read too much about it. You'll ruin the reveal sort of speak. You guess at the begining and as the pieces fall into place. I'd describe it similar to Interstellar (multiple planet, each very different) in some ways.
1
Mister_Brevity Apr 7, 2026 +1
Thanks, going in blind is best with the weirder ones :P
1
BluePot5 Apr 7, 2026 +1
I’ll be the contrarian and say I didn’t enjoy it. Didn’t click with me at all and hopped off after two episodes. And I’m a big sci fi guy.
1
Mister_Brevity Apr 7, 2026 +2
The weird stuff tends to be love or hate ;)
2
wex52 Apr 7, 2026 +38
If I enjoyed the 2015-2017 SyFy series Dark Matter, will I enjoy this? (I literally thought this was what the post about. I was thinking, “Wow that’s a long break between seasons. Wait, it *had* more than one season…?”)
38
Devilofchaos108070 Apr 7, 2026 +24
Nothing alike at all. This is a great show tho. I also loved the other Dark Matter, but yeah they are nothing alike
24
BallDesperate2140 Apr 8, 2026 +7
Dammit I wanna see what the Black Ships are!
7
iamacannibal Apr 7, 2026 +11
These shows only share a name. They are nothing alike. Dark Matter from Syfy is a space travel type of sci fi show. Dark Matter from Apple is about a guy going through alternate realities. Both are great. The one thing that hurts Apple's dark matter is the lack of Melissa O'Neil so the syfy Dark Matter is obviously better
11
gigashadowwolf Apr 8, 2026 +5
Loving her in The Rookie right now.
5
HumansNeedNotApply1 Apr 7, 2026 +12
They have nothing in common, so no idea. And yeah, i dislike they share the same name, when this show was announced i thought we were getting a new season...
12
smasherofscreens Apr 7, 2026 +8
Came to say the same. I really liked that show too. Sucks it got cancelled on a cliffhanger.
8
SovFist Apr 7, 2026 +7
Every single season on that show ends with the most ridiculous cliffhanger.
7
SpiritedOwl_2298 Apr 7, 2026 +1
I mean I enjoyed both but they’re not that similar. The newer one that this post is about isn’t an ensemble, it’s focused around one guy, his wife and child, and some coworkers. It’s action-y but more existential about the possibility of parallel worlds. I really enjoyed it but it’s very different, I think it’s worth a try though
1
sajaschi Apr 7, 2026 +2
Same here, I was excited for more of that one! But these books are in my TBR list. I'll probably give the show a chance, so I know whether to invest in the books...
2
RedditConsciousness Apr 7, 2026 +2
How do you feel about Sliders? This is like a prestige television version of Sliders.
2
wex52 Apr 8, 2026 +1
Oh wow, I remember Sliders. That was a fun show, sometimes serious. Alright, I’ll check it out when I renew my Apple subscription (I try to rotate my subscriptions).
1
belac4862 Apr 8, 2026 +1
I literally had to Google this, cause I thought it had 3 season already. Sadly, not the sa.e Dark Matter show...
1
mikepictor Apr 7, 2026 +9
What’s the verdict on this show? I like sci-fi, and I haven’t watched it as I thought it may be a little ponderous.
9
OdepiusNecks Apr 7, 2026 +7
First season was a fairly faithful adaptation of the book (not super surprising since the author is showrunner). They even gave us >!plague world, which I assumed they’d skip in a post-COVID world!<. It’s a touching story but I agree with others that Crouch’s characterization is his weak spot. There’s no second novel to adapt so this coming season will be wholly original. I’m cautiously optimistic but also a little disappointed we’re sticking with Jason and Daniella because their story was more or less concluded in the first season.
7
AhmedF Apr 8, 2026 +3
> also a little disappointed we’re sticking with Jason and Daniella because their story was more or less concluded in the first season. agreed
3
zeroxray Apr 7, 2026 +4
Honestly thought it was slow and bit boring but the last 2 episodes goes off the rails in a good way. I wasn't expecting another season of this show either
4
m4rk0358 Apr 7, 2026 +3
It's a 7 out of 10 for me. Solid
3
Former_Island_4730 Apr 7, 2026 +3
It was fine. The pacing was super slow in parts and the acting was a mixed bag. The concept may be a little cooler than the execution.
3
micadoog Apr 10, 2026 +3
I thought they squeezed about five episodes worth of story into nine episodes.
3
urgasmic Apr 7, 2026 +8
I thought it was great.
8
SmarmyYardarm Apr 7, 2026 +2
Yeah. Acting from everyone is marvelous. Top notch.
2
swentech Apr 7, 2026 +2
It’s kind of hard to mess up a parallel universe show and they most definitely did not mess it up. It’s great.
2
berlinbaer Apr 8, 2026 +3
hated it. bad dialogue and bad acting, super old basic premise that everyone in here keeps acting as if it's revolutionary, people acting stupid nearly constantly. hard pass.
3
Mataelio Apr 7, 2026 +1
I loved this show and recommend it to everyone I can, as well as the book it’s based on.
1
Hennahane Apr 8, 2026 +1
It starts quite slowly but the last 2-3 episodes lean fully into the concept and go wild
1
kielbasa330 Apr 7, 2026 +1
I read the book and enjoyed it. Tried watching with my gf and we peaced out after the first episode. It fell flat imo
1
FireVanGorder Apr 7, 2026 +9
Every time I see this show brought up I get sad that Dark Matter from 2015 got cancelled
9
duckrollin Apr 7, 2026 +9
For a moment I hoped the vastly superior SiFi Dark Matter TV show might be coming back when I read this, disappointed.
9
Nuka-Cole Apr 7, 2026 +17
I read the book, and didnt really get the hype. The concept is really interesting but the characters are just meh. “Guy wants to get back to wife” cool and all but why should I care about this one? Why is he so much more worthy than the others?
17
PrestigeArrival Apr 7, 2026 +9
I didn’t even bother finishing it. I got really disappointed when it turned out to just be a typical man-on-the-run story. I was hoping for so much more than that
9
LB3PTMAN Apr 8, 2026 +5
The different universes were interesting and I hope it keeps exploring that more in depth
5
Pizza4Free Apr 7, 2026 +5
I thought Season 1 was only okay, but I'm curious to see where they take the story beyond the book.
5
Competitive_Help8485 Apr 7, 2026 +3
I'm really looking forward to it. The first season was great!
3
bakerzdosen Apr 7, 2026 +5
Man, this has me nervous. It could be fantastic. Or it could be a disaster trying to extend a great book/series beyond its natural conclusion. But the proverbial side of the road is littered with similar failed attempts (The Matrix comes to mind) at building on popular SciFi projects ultimately serving only to tarnish the original’s legacy. I’ll give it a fair chance but this is a risky move to be sure.
5
tiredofstanding Apr 7, 2026 +12
It's a bit different situation since the author is thr showrunner.
12
MadmanMarkMiller Apr 8, 2026 +3
Whenever I see "Dark Matter" and it's not _that_ Dark Matter I die a little inside.
3
arazamatazguy Apr 7, 2026 +2
I'm definitely going to need a youtube season one recap before I watch season 2.
2
joaommoreira Apr 7, 2026 +2
Hell yeah
2
m4rk0358 Apr 7, 2026 +2
The show was fun enough. I'll continue.
2
Fancy-Truck-421 Apr 7, 2026 +2
I’m so excited
2
RusevReigns Apr 7, 2026 +2
It was decent but I think should've been one season.
2
solonoctus Apr 7, 2026 +2
Here’s hoping season 2 is just about the people who own that home from the finale coming back and being extremely confused as to why there’s a dozen dead Joel Edgertons everywhere.
2
the_brilliant_circle Apr 7, 2026 +2
If this is anything like Wayward Pines season 2… yikes
2
AyyStayban Apr 7, 2026 +2
Only semi-related, I met Jimmi Simpson at my gym while he was filming this in Chicago, and he is absolutely lovely. Super down to earth guy and prompted me to get into the show. Can’t wait for season 2!
2
Skadoosh_it Apr 7, 2026 +2
Not to be confused with the syfy show dark matter which was canceled years ago
2
tgabs Apr 7, 2026 +2
Watched the first couple episodes on a whim and it was actually surprisingly interesting, although the plot kinda faltered near the end. I seem to recall thinking there probably wouldn’t be a S2 though. Idk where they could take it at this point
2
crackenpuff Apr 8, 2026 +2
I thought this was about the *other* Dark Matter show for a second and obviously remembered it lasted more than 2 seasons. The new Dark Matter show isn't bad either, just wish the old one didn't have to be cancelled for The Expanse to live.
2
eldenpotato Apr 8, 2026 +2
This is legit a good show. Worth a watch if you like sci-fi.
2
Utinnni Apr 8, 2026 +2
Ok but what about Silo
2
FactorHour2173 Apr 7, 2026 +2
Such a good show.
2
iamacannibal Apr 7, 2026 +2
Im excited for this but every time I see the name I get excited thinking they are somehow making a final season to properly end the SyFy show Dark Matter. I know it will never happen but I still get my hopes up
2
Saltimbanco_volta Apr 7, 2026 +2
Using the word "hit" very liberally here.
2
phrozen_waffles Apr 8, 2026 +2
I lived a few blocks away from the real Village Tap bar in Chicago. You would think they would get a ton of publicity from a "hit" show. The owner said I was like the 2nd person to mention the show, but he didn't even remember the shows name.
2
itsgonnabe-mae Apr 7, 2026 +1
If I read the book but didn’t watch season 1, can I just start with season 2? I tried and could not get into it for some reason even though it’s one of my favorite books.
1
moongobby Apr 7, 2026 +1
Is season 2 based on any of the authors writings?
1
urgasmic Apr 7, 2026 +2
The author is the show runner so technically yes
2
Nuo_Vibro Apr 7, 2026 +1
hopefully they give it an ending then. If tis ends on a cliffhanger.......
1
Orphasmia Apr 7, 2026 +1
Why do so few people watch apple tv stuff? It’s so good
1
Alarmed-Outside-8683 Apr 7, 2026 +1
I read this book because someone i worked with wanted to do a book club. All i could think while reading was "this is written like it's meant to be a crappy movie or TV show". Today i find out it is one of those! Congrats, Mr. Crouch!
1
braves-geek Apr 8, 2026 +1
They kept filming under wraps for sure
1
elkruegs Apr 8, 2026 +1
I think it could have been a single season. The lead guy is great, but the story opens itself to way too many issues for no reason
1
stonedkrypto Apr 8, 2026 +1
I found the book pretty rudimentary for a sci-fi, didn’t know there was a show but willing give it try. I know IMDb is not always a great source but 7.6 for a series doesn’t shout “acclaimed”.
1
No-Bail-79 Apr 8, 2026 +1
The cast does need a few more acting chops..
1
lospollosakhis Apr 8, 2026 +1
Was this show any good? How’s the writing and dialogue?
1
labelm8 Apr 8, 2026 +1
Yes it’s very good
1
Throwaway_Tablecloth Apr 11, 2026 +1
I haven’t seen the show, but this straight up just being Crouch’s sequel to the story(which I have read the book) has me very interested. At the same time, I wish he’d write another novel. Upgrade was bad imo, but this and Recursion are so good.
1
ButtSpelunker420 Apr 7, 2026 +1
I’m amazed Tim Cook can sign off on projects like this with Trump’s c*** in his mouth. Truly an inspiring CEO. What a genius businessman.
1
NATScurlyW2 Apr 7, 2026 +1
I assumed they cancelled it. It’s been a long time.
1
ManyFacedGod_ Apr 7, 2026 +1
Is the book worth reading before watching the show?
1
phonologotron Apr 7, 2026 +2
Yes it is. He’s a good writer
2
Really_McNamington Apr 7, 2026 +1
He keeps you reading. Sci-fi/thriller crossover. I picked up this one in a three pack on Amazon with Recursion and Upgrade and I read all three within 5 or 6 days.
1
mdavis360 Apr 7, 2026 +1
Yes. But the book is completely adapted in season 1. This is all new story in S2.
1
hdgx Apr 7, 2026 +1
I was listening to the audiobook in the car years ago, and kept missing my exit because I was so enthralled near the end.
1
Ok_Car9530 Apr 8, 2026 +1
I think the book is a lot better. The TV series is ok, but it fails to capture the thriller elements that make the book so enthralling.
1
lossaysswag Apr 7, 2026 +1
Very happy to return to this world as I have no connection to source material. Seems like it would be a very interesting concept to build new stories around
1
Crimie1337 Apr 8, 2026 +1
I want the sci fi dark matter back
1
pslind69 Apr 7, 2026 -1
Complete c*** imo.
-1
fs2222 Apr 7, 2026
I enjoyed the book but got bored with the show after a couple episodes. Most of the characters seem miscast except Jimmie Simpson.

God damn it which streaming service do I have to cut so I can sign up for Apple+? This is starting to be like streaming service premiere league relegation
