Are there any 1-vs-many films where the hero does not need to be saved by someone else?

Posted by efficiens

Movies like John Wick often have at least one point where the hero would die if some old friend(s) did not come to his rescue. Are there any where the "unstoppable" man does it all himself? I don't mean he never has any research / logistics help but where he does not need someone else to save him either from death or prison?

Oldboy is the only time I saw one man do it all himself and I didn't want to pull my hair out at the stupidity of it all.

>only time I saw one man do it all himself My friend I need to ask you to watch the Raid movies.  Also Ip Man.

Not a man, but the Bride didn’t get any help in Kill Bill.

It was Oldboy, in the hallway, with a hammer.

oldboy is wild for that reason - dude basically becomes a one man wrecking crew through pure determination and planning. the raid comes pretty close too, rama fights his way through that entire building without needing anyone to bail him out when things get dicey. man vs food but with fists and hammers lol

Bill's Brother, Budd, was killed by Elle. While not technically coming to The Brides aid that was help for her.

Rambo pretty much takes care of everything by himself. He is talked out of flying off the handle and going to jail at the end so I don’t know if that counts

This was my first thought too, except he was saved by the girl when she breaks him out of police custody with the rocket launcher.

She also radios the military and lands the plane that picks them up.

Without his son, Preston would have been caught and killed without a doubt. His son got rid of his hidden stash of daily emotion suppression meds prior to the home being searched.

What makes you think he would have been caught? He stormed the fortress of the most powerful man in the world, taking out every guard on the way, and walked away at the end.

Preston was scared and frantic trying to get home so he can get rid of his stash. He was not in the right mindset to storm the fortress and take everyone out until after he spoke to his son and found out that both his son and daughter had stopped taking their meds long ago. If they found his stash at home, Preston never would have got the opportunity to have that discussion with his son and they would probably try to use his kids as leverage to get him to come in quietly. And the odds against him would be stacked WAY higher. He would not have walked into the fortress with his weapons and would likely have had to start his fight right there at his house, giving father ample time to call in reinforcements to lock down the fortress. At least that's what I think.

I think most Jason Statham films are like that. See Wrath of Man, The Beekeeper, and Shelter; the 3 most recent ones. The Equalizer 3 is also like that, really ridiculous how OP Denzel Washington is on that one. It's like watching a slasher film but it's just Denzel killing all enemies in very effortless manner.

Equalized 2 is even more ridiculous. At least in 3 he's just against some mobsters. In 2 he's against dudes who are supposed to be as good as him and are 15 years younger than him.

Does anyone save Donnie Yen's ip man? I also think Chinese connection/fists of fury and fist of legend are just the one guy

ict_brian Apr 3, 2026 +2
At the end of the first one, Ip is shot after defeating the Japanese captain or whatever he was and Ip's friend stopped the shooter from putting more rounds in him. But other than that, no. And I wouldn't even say that should count. Just trying to play devil's advocate.

Fist of Legend is literally a remake of Chinese Connection. It was a fictional homage lionizing people like Ip Man, who was a real person, though he never fought Mike Tyson.

Bruce Willis, Die Hard. Even with no footwear, he manages to take out all the bad guys at Nakatomi, while the idiot police and feds get their asses handed to them by Hans Gruber.

Doesn't Carl Winslow save him at the very end when they're walking out of the tower?

Practically every Schwarzenegger and Stallone action film from the 80s. Sometimes they’d get a sidekick but the sidekick would never save their life, just help out a little sometimes.

The Raid: Redemption Such a sick movie. Nonstop BRUTAL close quarters violence.

ict_brian Apr 3, 2026 +2
The hero would absolutely have been killed easily if his brother didn't help him defeat that one super badass dude 2-on-1. They both got their asses beat even going 2-on-1 until main dude got an opening to finish him off with the broken light. Had they fought 1-on-1, the story would have ended there.

In The Truman Show, barring any exceptions, he would grow old and die of old age right in front of the cameras.

Speed Racer is always my answer for this. He was always the best and not only destroyed everyone despite them all conspiring to cheat against him, but did so easily with his own style like it was just another Tuesday.

Hear me out now. Shawshank Redemption. It's Andy versus rapists, sadistic guards, a terribly corrupt warden, and whoever else. Red and the crew only provide logistical support. Andy digs himself out to freedom and a real life. He gets sweet revenge on the Shawshank staff and pockets a life changing amount of money. He also learned some things about himself and finally found peace. Total win (relatively speaking).

It's been a while since I've seen these, but....? Falling Down Alien (from the point of view of the xenomorph) The Running Man (recent one) Mad Max: Fury Road More recently, there might be a moment in They Will Kill You that disqualifies it (I don't remember if there's help saving the hero's life or not).

Cutuljo Apr 3, 2026 +1
I think Drive qualifies, Ryan Gosling takes care of everything by himself

Any Arnold or Sylvester movie in the 80s and early 90s. And have you ever thought of this- Sylvester Stallone's first name is ***Sylvester***.

The Man from Nowhere. Unless you want to get all lovey dovey and say that he is saved metaphorically.

Crazy Samurai Mushashi, where the hero fights 588 enemies. That's it, that's literally the whole movie.
