Aretha Franklin Told Jill Scott to Get Her '2 Hot Dogs With Cooked Onions and Mustard' When They Met
Jill Scott is reminiscing about her first time meeting Aretha Franklin, who Scott says told her to get "two hot dogs with grilled onions and mustard" when she met the Queen of Soul for the first time.

This sounds bad, but context matters: at the time Jill had just crashed her hot dog car into a clothing store while wearing a hot dog costume and was desperately trying to find a scapegoat to shift the blame.

Aretha was so freaking mean. Literally, all of her R&B Diva peers have accounts of her being rude to them: Dionne Warwick, Patti Labelle, Mavis Staples, Gladys Knight, Diana Ross, Martha Reeves, Tina Turner, etc. Just about every R&B Diva that came after her also has as a story about a time when Aretha bullied them: Fantasia, Mary J, Luther, Natalie Cole, Chaka Khan, TLC, Lauryn Hill, etc. She was even mean to Whitney Houston when Whitney first broke out as a star in the 1980s and Whitney’s *mother* Cissy Houston was admittedly one of her best friends. How do you bully your best friend’s child who you’ve known since they were a little girl? She publically lost her shit when Beyonce called Tina Turner “The Queen” after performing with her. She released a statement implying that she has been insulted! No genre had even been specified. Worst of all, she directly sabotaged the careers of her own sisters who were talented singer-songwriters in their own right. They even wrote hit songs for Aretha. In the black community, she has the nickname Hateretha and it is well earned.

She was an extraordinarily talented woman, but I will never forgive her for her disrespect toward other women, especially Carole King during the Divas show, who is widely regarded as one of the kindest people on Earth. They'd just finished a beautiful rendition of You've Got A Friend and before people could even finish applauding the performance, Aretha had already started walking out which appeared to be a surprise to Carole and everyone else on stage. I can no longer find the interview where Carole was asked about Aretha taking over everyone's parts - including her own - during Natural Woman for Divas. However, I remember Carole just said, "It's her song," and smiled. I thought Celine was brilliant for not allowing Aretha to overshadow her, whereas the other women stepped back out of respect for Aretha when she took over their parts. Celine still had respect, but she didn't allow the disrespect to happen to her.

"Celine still had respect, but she didn't allow the disrespect to happen to her." A queen, and one we can all learn from.

Truly. 🙏🏻 May we all be as classy, assertive, and whimsical as Celine.

Carole is classy but also I think it stems from her roots in composing and being a songwriter that she is humble in receiving her praise and supports collaboration. Even my mom who introduced me to CK thought You've Got a Friend was James Taylor's. But those are without a doubt King songs.❤️

I used to work at a Louis Vuitton in Chicago. She came in to shop one time and literally sent me out in a snowstorm to go get her a ginger ale from a store nearby and when I got back she and her group were gone without buying anything.

Eventually you realise the skills required to become very famous aren't the same as the ones required to be a good person. We seem to think that if someone is very good at one thing they must be good at everything - often its the opposite. Humans are like an RPG. Some people get max talent and "kindness" is their dump stat.

Picked up random shifts at a flower shop in Birmingham, MI after getting my driver’s license. I didn’t go … but i was warned anyway that Aretha regularly has fresh flowers delivered, and don’t linger, or attempt to speak to her.

broha89 Apr 2, 2026 +10
A couple years ago I saw a video making the rounds of Aretha throwing subtle shade at Taylor swift and the listnook hive reaction was all “hahah a true starlet recognizes that Taylor is dirt under her shoes!” And I was like that’s just how she treats the entire world, she seemed truly miserable to be around by all accounts

You’re literally getting a parody YouTube tv show mixed up with real life.
-5
Stock_College_8108 Apr 2, 2026 +11
No, I’m aware of the parody YouTube videos. I’m not senile. The nickname came from the videos exaggerating her behavior but the incidents I referenced in my comment happened irl.
11
Technical-Big-2097 Apr 2, 2026 -3
Because let it also be known Tina Turner has stories of her being so freaking mean, look up the stories of her and Judge Joe Brown. Diana Ross has stories of her being so freaking mean. Chaka Khan has stories of her being so freaking mean. Lauryn Hill has stories of her being difficult. And so on and so on, so it doesn’t, it didn’t start with Aretha and it won’t stop with her.
-3
Technical-Big-2097 Apr 2, 2026 -14
I NEVER CALLED YOU SENILE, regular, educated, intelligent, people can conflate two things.    Yeah, there were definitely moments where she could be blunt or competitive. She was in a competitive industry. But the whole “she bullied everyone” thing feels like a few stories that have been repeated and exaggerated over time. A lot of those same R&B divas respected her and could only hope for the kind of longevity she had. You don’t sustain a career like that by being a pushover.

Which part? All of it?

Stock_College_8108 Apr 2, 2026 +5
In the 2010s, there were these popular YouTube videos that satirized her known antagonistic behavior towards others Divas and popularized her nickname Hateretha. However, the negative incidents with the people I listed actually happened in real life. The satirization was born from Aretha’s behavior being well known.

“I think I had the number one album in the country at the time,” Scott said. “And I went to the corner and I got those hot dogs, and I brought them back, and I just waited. I don’t even think she ate them."

A friend of mine in Michigan once saw her pull up to Coney Island restaurant in a strip mall in a limo. Maybe she really loved hot dogs. lol

No_Command_8477 Apr 2, 2026 +15
Aretha is mean but this is also really funny. Asking someone to get you two hot dogs is just a hell of an opener, it's Tracy Morgan-esque
15
robx51 Apr 2, 2026 +7
Nah, it's funny AF. I thought the story was going to go, "and then Aretha said, I'm just messing with you. But damn did she really love her hot dogs."

Aretha was not a good person
42
Technical-Big-2097 Apr 2, 2026 -41
No one is, neither was mister Rodgers.
-41
nondescriptun Apr 2, 2026 +16
>neither was mister Rodgers Agreed. Mr. (Aaron) Rodgers was and is not a good person. However, Mr. Rogers was a great man.
16
Technical-Big-2097 Apr 2, 2026 -9
My point isn’t that anyone is secretly terrible, my point is that we flatten people into extremes because it’s easier. Aretha Franklin’s life included racism, sexism, and giving birth at 12. That shapes a person. Reducing that to “she was not a good person” ignores context and her insecurities.  Meanwhile, someone like Mr. Rogers benefits from a very curated public image. We don’t actually know much about any adversity he faced in comparison. You can line up plenty of Black women with similar experiences and call them “bad,” but that says more about how we judge people than who they actually are. People are dynamic. The labels are the oversimplification.
-9
nondescriptun Apr 2, 2026 +11
My point was that you spelled "Rogers" wrong when you tried to refer to Mr. (Fred) Rogers. I'm sympathetic to the concept of everyone being complex and having their own backgrounds, but I don't think referring to Mr. Rogers as "not a good person" is useful or accurate. If anything is undermines the point you were making (or was just ragebait- which was successful if so). A lot is known about Mr. Rogers and his off-screen life, and while no one is perfect by almost all accounts he was a very good bloke. He also wasn't an overly "curated" figure as you suggest. Yes, people regularly over simplify celebrities (and everyone else), but it's also an oversimplification to say that "no one is good" as you said. Also, I don't think race has anything to do with this view of Franklin (not to mention most of Franklin's biggest "critics" were also black women, as she was notorious for trying to keep others like her down so she could rise higher).
11
Technical-Big-2097 Apr 2, 2026 -8
I can handle someone having a different opinion. Pointing me to a sub to compare it to a 14-year-old isn’t really engaging with what I said, and focusing on a spelling mistake isn’t either. As I’ve already explained, many of the same critics you’re referencing also had reputations for being difficult or not being pushovers. In that industry, especially as a Black woman, having longevity often requires that kind of backbone. I don’t need you to tell me where race is or isn’t relevant in America. And I didn’t say “no one is good.” You’re choosing to stop there. My point is that people are dynamic, and reducing them to “good” or “bad” misses that

SuperChingaso5000 Apr 2, 2026 +7
Nothing says "backbone" like treating your peers (from that same community) like trash. Race has nothing to do with it

I know a lot more about the community than you think. You're being parasocial and your obsession isn't healthy. Can't help with that.

Marshmallow09er Apr 2, 2026 +9
What makes you say that?
9
Technical-Big-2097 Apr 2, 2026 -16
Humans aren’t all good or all bad. Public figures get remembered through a curated lens. Admiring someone’s work doesn’t require pretending they were flawless.
-16
Marshmallow09er Apr 2, 2026 +12
I’m not saying he was flawless, but I do think he was a good person
12
Technical-Big-2097 Apr 2, 2026 -9
Kinda like Micheal Jackson. Not flawless but a good person ☺️☺️

Yeah okay wow so deep, whatever, but where did you see that Mr. Rogers was not a good person?
8
Technical-Big-2097 Apr 2, 2026 -1
It’s not deep at all, its a surface level thought to any rational adult but when youre 14 and Mr.rodgers is your idol I guess it may be deep.

Any reason to be group angry. Jill didn’t suffer then and isn’t suffering now. Jill Scott told radio dj Patti Jackson  in Philly that she needed to get her teeth tended to immediately, because her mom was dental hygienist and she can tell with ppl have poisoned teeth. Patti was struggling with caregiving and now has all new teeth bc of that experience. Don’t tell shit bc of your mom’s job.
