why are donkey meat cheaper than beef? I would expect chicken and pigs to be more efficient than cows, donkey, and horses. The only reason I can think of is if the donkey meat is from old retired beasts of burden.

Not much of an international market for donkey meat. Something like 30% of Argentian beef is exported, so the domestic price is going to directly impacted by the international price.

Exactly this. People are saying "We produce lots of X! It's gonna be c**** for us!" Nope, not with global markets. That's why the Iran war still fucks US consumers despite the gas pumps being next door to a well and refinery. Companies ain't gonna sell it to you for c**** when they can export it for $$$.

Yeah you should see dairy prices in NZ, we pay way too much for butter and cheese given the amount of dairy we produce. Same for lamb

IDK about Argentina but donkeys in the US are c****. As long as you’re not picky about temperament or breeding quality you can get them for 250-500 dollars. Occasionally you’ll see foul tempered jacks selling for 100 bucks. If all you care about is meat and have no ethical issues eating donkey meat it’s c**** protein.

Where I come from the feed is the main driver of the cost of meat. * You need \~6 kg of feed, to produce 1 kg of beef. * You need \~4 kg of feed, to produce 1 kg of pork. * You need \~2 kg of feed, to produce 1 kg of poultry. I would assume that the donkey FCR (ie. cost) is in line with the beef. [https://awellfedworld.org/feed-ratios/](https://awellfedworld.org/feed-ratios/) Why use expensive feed-stock to produce low cost donkey, when you could produce beef instead at the same cost? Or produce poultry instead? We have had the IKEA meatball scandal, where old riding horses was converted into low cost mincemeat., outside veterinary control. But those was not breed for their meat, they were just put into the large mincer when they were not useful any longer.

Apparently they’re significantly more water and feed efficient especially in harsher climates.  That being said, we been through this before. Even when donkey eating becomes popular it’s generally not sustainable. The African Union had to ban exports to China because they were “using” all their donkeys. People ain’t really growing them for the express purpose of eating em

> We have had the IKEA meatball scandal, where old riding horses was converted into low cost mincemeat., outside veterinary control. And now I'm going to continue to never try their meatballs. This also negatively affects my entire perception of them as a whole. I was literally in there today looking at their shoe organizers and I'm not feeling better we wound up going with something else. Yeah, I will probably never forget this. I hope it was worth it to them.

Ikea gets the meat from a supplier. A wide variety of brands were affected by this back then (13 years ago fyi). This was also only in Europe, so if you’re in the US you were never affected by this.

Hopefully you dont live in Europe, because it was all over the place. You gonna have to avoid ALOT of places :) "The 2013 Europe horse meat scandal began when Irish inspectors discovered horse DNA in frozen beefburgers, revealing a massive, continent-wide food fraud where horsemeat was mislabeled as beef. **Millions** of processed products, including lasagne and meatballs, were withdrawn by major retailers like Tesco, Burger King, Aldi, Findus, Nestle, Asda, Waitrose, and IKEA. "

Them grillsteaks they used to sell everywhere in the UK that are suspiciously unavailable anymore. They were delicious but the timing of them disappearing was strange. You can get grill steaks now but dont taste the same.

Also, horse meat is no joke delicious. Wouldn't want to eat it unknowingly mind you, but it's quite good.

Donkeys are so lovely don’t eat them

Because donkey meat is a byproduct of donkey hides, China has been buying large quantities of donkey hides from around the world (It has even become pillar industry of Pakistan), to produce a type of local health supplement, which has driven down the price of donkey meat. The same thing happens with ducks, since duck meat is also a byproduct of duck feathers, which are used to make down jackets. Donkey meat is actually really delicious. In my view even better than beef. I highly recommend giving it a try.

Duck is a massively popular meat in Asia.

>why are donkey meat cheaper than beef? My answer is going to be pure speculation based on no evidence, but: availability. People gotta eat something and if beef/chicken/pork aren't readily available or affordable....

The paradox is that Argentina has vast oil reserves, so the war in Iran should have theoretically helped the country prosper through enrichment

Lots of argentinian gas and petrol is not yet explored, with the fields of vaca muerta proving difficult for argentine to explore on its own, so its been a back and forth between argentina and petrobras on the exploration and transportation rights of the region.

Donkey meat is delicious tho, I had a slow cooked donkey meat flat bread sandwich in Beijing. “Dragon meat in heaven, donkey meat on earth.”

In Italy the stufato di musso served with polenta is a staple of Alps food.

MeadowMellow_ 10 hr ago +1
Is it anything similar to horse meat?
1
Emotional_Camp6643 9 hr ago +3
I haven’t had horse meat yet, so I can’t say. Donkey meat is super tender when braised, slight sweetness to the meat, and texture wise fine grains.

I don't understand the dichotomy of Milei. He won the recent election handsomely. And may be Argentina has made some tangible gains under him. But he also seems struggling and unpopular sometimes. I guess just Argentina things

The issue is that the previous Argentinian government had a long history of providing generous benefits, and when it came to paying for those benefits, just printing more money to cover the cost. The idea was that a good percentage of the country were direct beneficiaries of these benefits and they would vote to preserve them, keeping that party in power, even if the country was headed for proverbial hell in a handbasket. (There really are people like that! I remember one discussion with an Argentine college student who thought that losing their full government-paid education subsidy was terrible, and that 100% annual inflation was a totally reasonable thing to deal with in exchange...) Milei's reduced the spending so that Argentina's at least kind of close to "responsible spending" levels (not really, but it's not like the US can criticize here these days...) That's good in the sense that inflation is down by a LOT and the economy is actually starting to recover. At the same time, there were a hell of a lot of people getting government checks that now aren't, and not everyone that lost their support was an undeserving grifter; there are some people who legitimately got screwed in the transition. The other party did not have an actual solution, aside from "keep doing the thing that's not working!"

Full government paid education is definitely possible without 100% inflation.

In functional countries, yes. Not in Argentina, at least not for a long while yet.
1
rich1051414 8 hr ago +1
Why? Because traditional meats are more profitable if they export them instead.

Its Argentina. Its been riding one insane collapse driven by screwed up policies that someone pulled out of their rear since shortly after the invention of sliced bread. They haven't exactly had much experience with sane leadership so this is to be expected. The rest of us are catching up, however.

This is some of the most disgusting displays of intentional misinformation that I have seen related to Argentina in my life, coming just weeks since it was proven that Russia had misinformation campaigns against Milei. So, congrats for being so shameless in your lies.

Why would Russia tried to elect someone who is anti-Russia, compared to pro-Russian establishment?

From the context I guess Donkey doesn't taste very good? I feel like you could just not buy it then. Make some chicken, it's good. A "crisis" though? Lol strange story.
