Finally some positive news, I hope they come home safely, to a better world

They’ll be back in a couple days, so I doubt it.

I don't think these astronauts will be so lucky as to land on the planet of the apes.

damn it, we're still no closer at figuring out how they stole the statue of liberty from us.

They will come back safely. The US is doing everything they can to make the world worse, unfortunately.

Someone said earlier that everyone should dress up like apes from planet of the apes for lols. I'm like yes gotta do it.

It’s so mind boggling that such an incredible human achievement is being overshadowed by such a nonsensical war - by the same nation.

Just like the first time no?

kansei7 4 days ago +34
random aside, but the other day I almost texted my dad something about how it's wild this happens to be occurring simultaneously with a nonsensical unpopular foreign war, but then I remembered he didn't get to experience the Apollo flights live because he was stuck on a Navy destroyer in Vietnam the whole time. I'm really glad he's getting to follow this one live.

Sequels always suck though.. but still cool to go back to the moon tho even tho its a bit late.

Well, near the moon at least.

To be frank, Artemis is very much an international mission.

To be fair the US is a large and diverse nation. A lot of different things can happen in multiple states.

I was thinking the other day, I keep a smile while reading about Artemis 2 stuff, it's so cool to talk about it. But here we are raging about War, ICE, gas price and AI.

Are the going to land it in the moon or not?

I grew up in the Apollo years. Feeling a lot of emotion/nostalgia with this mission. Amazing what we can accomplish when working together.

It would be so funny if they reposted this story with the updated distance every minute as though it was breaking news
3
doublethink_1984 4 days ago +15
Let's keep reposting this for the next few days because it keeps being right
15
kansei7 4 days ago +26
This literally just happened, it's not a repost from days ago. People not paying close attention to this event might not be aware of the various records they've been setting here. This might make it sound like reposting. Believe earlier today they broke the "farthest humans have been from earth" record, but they weren't at the max distance of their flight, which happened tonight. Again, this just happened, they're now coming back around the other side of the moon.

Sorry dude, only doom and gloom is allowed. We’ll make exceptions for 500 articles about Trump saying ‘f***’ on Easter, though (I’m not condoning or endorsing that creature, btw.)

kansei7 4 days ago +9
tuning in to the NASA livestream on youtube all day (playing on various screens throughout the home) is the only live news event I've ever wanted to watch in .. decades? My whole life? it's the only way to stay sane whilst catching up on war news.

Sludgewaves 4 days ago +5
Right there with you, I think some people just get a little too addicted to the ragebait in the news all the time, which is understandable because it’s formulated to be that way. Gotta break it up with the cool stuff like this whole mission!
5
Ghede 4 days ago
No, they broke the record, reached the farthest point in their journey five hours later, and now they are approaching your location.

VanCityPhotoNewbie 4 days ago +3
Man imagine if they used their science and wisdom to not screw over countries from across the world and spent more money on a space program rather than the military complex. Nasa could probably already colonize Mars

So are they opening admitting that this never happened in the 60’s?

WhatAGoodDoggy 3 days ago +2
You know you can do something more than once and have the most recent one be the furthest, right? From the article: >About five hours later, at 7.02pm ET, the crew reached the furthest point in its mission, before swinging back around, at 252,756 miles from Earth – 4,111 miles farther than the ill-fated Apollo 13 mission in 1970.

They’re leaving us behind aren’t they? They have a settlement already set up on Mars and it’s got an indoor pool with a zip line.

Imagine throwing a ball straight up. After a moment, it stops dead in the air, then comes back down again. Integrity has just passed the "dead in the air" moment, and it's now falling back towards the Earth. The harder you throw the ball, the higher it goes. Given that Integrity has reached the highest altitude ever reached, by definition it must have been going the fastest, albeit only slightly faster than Apollo 13.

How many times can this be posted?
-16
kansei7 4 days ago +9
this event just happened, it's not some repost. Understand this might be confusing if you're not live following the event. Earlier today they broke the previous record for farthest humans have been from earth. They weren't yet at their farthest distance in this flight path, which they just reached going around the back side of the moon this evening.

What is the point of this launch? We already had people land on the moon. I live close to where they take off and I had so many friends and family text me I should go watch this launch. I’m not understanding the significance.
-14
arrgobon32 4 days ago +16
We’re gearing up to land on the moon again, but this mission was just to make sure our new tech can make it safely to the moon and back. It obviously can on paper, but it’s nice to do all of the due diligence and work our way back incrementally
16
AssociationFit3009 4 days ago -14
why are we landing on the moon again?
-14
Nandorsfamiliar 4 days ago +9
The stated goal of the Artemis missions is to not only eventually land on the moon but to set up a permanent moon base of operations.
9
yousyveshughs 4 days ago +9
To build a moon base.
9
AssociationFit3009 4 days ago -6
What are we going to do with a moon base?
-6
amyts 4 days ago +7
Science and engineering, prepare for a Mars mission.
7
DSHIZNT3 4 days ago +8
If we're going to explore further it's much easier to launch from the moon than Earth.
8
yousyveshughs 4 days ago +3
It’s the next logical step to space exploration. Also creates an easier way for a ship to travel to another planet as apposed to launching from earth.
3
cwx149 4 days ago +4
Ostensibly we need a replacement for the ISS since it's on paper due to be decommissioned soon (like in the next decade or so iirc) So if that all happens we kinda need somewhere for the astronauts to go and do space stuff There are also just generally a lot of practical reasons if in the future you want to go further than the moon
4
Alpha_Storm 3 days ago +1
If nothing else, the technology they improve discover ends up being used here on earth. A lot of our technological advances, now in our everyday lives, were developed or improved by NASA.
1
Excellent_Problem753 4 days ago +9
It's the first time since the 70s that we have left low Earth orbit with a crew, and is the first of a series of missions aimed at putting us back on the moon.
9
AssociationFit3009 4 days ago -2
That’s what I dont get. We’re doing a bunch of shit so we can once again do something we already did in the 70s?
-2
Excellent_Problem753 4 days ago +3
Well we kind of abandoned our moon program and it's been dormant. Now we want to start going further, but the first set is to go back to the moon. Tech has changed by orders of magnitude, but it doesn't make it easy, just different.
3
ForeskinWhatskin 4 days ago -11
Right, but still, why? Instead of bombing schools and hospitals, laying off people in wildlife sciences, and sending rockets to a desolate moon, why not spend those resources saving the one planet we have?
-11
Noslen11 4 days ago +9
The moon gives us lot of insight into earths history and ways we can protect it. The advancements that come from space exploration also directly impact us on earth. You can thank NASA for the modern CMOS sensors you have in your camera and smartphones as well MRI machines. And those are just the two that I can remember off the top of my head.
9
ManicStreetTeachers 4 days ago +2
Because we need to start destroying the moon, like what we're doing to our planet.
2
crakemonk 4 days ago +2
I believe it’s the same reasons we did it in the 70s, except replace Russia with China. Oh, and to also an attempt to create a base for human survival.
2
Upset_Albatross_9179 4 days ago +4
The longer term intention is to build some kind of moon base. It's been so long since the last time we went to the moon, we basically have to relearn how to do it with modern technology. Earlier we sent an unmanned mission around the moon to test the rockets and instruments. This mission's intention is to test all the functionality a crew needs, like a functioning toilette. Later we'll actually land on the moon, and presumably start building something permanent.

Pure speculation of course, but it seems to fit. I asked myself the same question, what the c*** is the point of it. https://youtu.be/j_AlXChA9F4

Oh neat! I hope that helps people with all this pain, death, and struggling going on. All we needed was a fun little trip around the moon to keep us entertained, right? To forget the pain? 🙄 Look. I'm all in for space exploration but now is not the time. Release the Trump-Epstein Files. Jail the ICE murderers that killed two Americans. Arrest all the Pedophiles!
-13
Vevaseti 4 days ago +5
There are three f****** million news articles about the war, and Trump and Epstein, and ICE, every single day. It is a nonstop deluge, every day. But yes, the moon missions which have been planned and worked on and in-progress for like 10 f****** years are just a little distraction. Does sucking all the air out of a room just come naturally or is this a concentrated effort?
5
drrhrrdrr 4 days ago +11
You talk like we can't do both at the same time.
11
EuphoricCrashOut 4 days ago -7
I love you random stranger, but... lol, we can't... because we're not. You tell me we're doing both at the same time... because we're doing the fun space part, yeah... but where's the relief for the other stuff? (Which by the way is about to have its funding murdered) And you people down-voting me... just hating on the truth. Stop sticking your heads in the sand, and falling for another ploy to get you to stop talking about all the insanity going on right now. LOOK UP! (Enjoy the space stuff! Don't forget about the suffering stuff!)
-7
legopieface 4 days ago +6
In what f****** looney world would ending NASA help people? They’d just stack that budget onto defense and send more missiles into the Middle East. Stop being reactionary to every single thing and think for 5 f****** seconds before writing some slop comment.
6
EuphoricCrashOut 4 days ago -2
What are you even talking about?? Can you comprehend English? I'm FOR NASA. Trump and his administration is about to kill their budget even further, for his WAR. Are you a bot??! Be better.
-2
legopieface 4 days ago +5
“I’m for space!! Just not now 🥺” “Trump is defunding NASA, which is bad! But we should defund NASA!” You have the rationality of a five-year-old.
5
EuphoricCrashOut 4 days ago
It's possible to be 'For NASA' and also have an opinion on it being used to cover up other **major** issues in America (and the world) right now, to distract you. (Obviously it's working on you) It's a trip to somewhere we've been before. I still have no idea where you read that I said we should defund NASA. You make absolutely no logical sense at all, and I'm going to walk away from this.

Artemis is a multi-president operation… If you think this is some Republican conspiracy you’re simply too dumb to engage with. Hopefully you see beyond your own rage one day.

"we can't because we're not" is really circular reasoning. We can walk and chew gum at the same time here.  And we can do it without cynicism that so often bleeds the joy out of this site. Edit: Of COURSE the 10 month old account with 17k Karma accuses me of being a bot and then blocks my account like a totally reasonable, stable, and well-adjusted person would. Here's one to you, /u/EuphoricCrashOut : >Everyone here is a bot except you
3
EuphoricCrashOut 3 days ago
You really can't comprehend English. Are you an AI bot? "We cannot do because we are not " is perfectly sound reasoning and logic. Be better. I wish you a more fulfilling life. (If you're even real)

Pathetic when they try to make something that was already done in the 1960s sound new and exciting. The difference in distance is negligible.
