> The Nigerian military did not immediately respond to requests for comment but has previously denied targeting civilians, saying airstrikes are intelligence-led and hit only militant targets. I can believe that this wasn't targeting civilians per se, but I have a very hard time believing it wasn't mostly civilians killed.

It's always mostly civilians, the Nigerian air force has been doing this for years. The militant leadership use the civilians as coverage and the Nigerian military doesn't care and sees taking out seasoned insurgents and their leadership as more valuable then any recruits that will join from the attack.

There we go again.. It is pretty much the same pattern as in Asia ... jihad vs crusades WWIII.. 17 years and ongoing >Nigeria's military has been battling banditry in the northwest and a 17-year Islamist insurgency in the northeast. The United States struck what it said were Islamist bases in northwestern Nigeria on Christmas Day last year, after President Donald Trump accused Nigeria of failing to protect Christians.

Two markets, two months, hundreds of civilians dead. At some point a pattern stops being an accident and starts being a policy failure that demands structural reform.
