in order to be effective, quarantine periods must meet or exceed the maximum possible incubation period. otherwise you have not done an effective quarantine. shorter quarantines (for convenience because people don’t like being quarantined basically) allow leaks and are an inferior practice for public health.

It doesn’t spread asymptomatically. So incubation period is not the same risk factor as COVID.
6
Expensive_Track_88226 days ago
+10
we don’t actually know that for sure. it is a working assumption. but because there is extremely limited data on human-human spread of the andean hanta species, it’s not something that should be relied on here. this may even be a novel strain of andean hanta that’s more communicable: we won’t know until we get the genome sequence.
also there are some questions that i don’t think we have a good answer to yet. for example, people usually contract hantavirus from dust off dried rodent droppings: that means the virus is sturdy enough to survive desiccation intact, for periods of years even. does that mean that a sick person’s sputum or saliva could dry, and still be dangerous? how long does it persist on contaminated surfaces? how easily transmitted by shared food or utensils? do different transmission routes have different risk levels at different stages in the infection? etc.
assumptions at this stage are DANGEROUS. we were told similar soothingly incorrect things about covid at first.
10
DuchessJulietDG6 days ago
+2
yes- how long it stays active on surfaces in the environment would be a question id like answered & what type of human to human contact. obv enough for a husband and wife to both die from it but also enough for a flight attendant to pick it up off a flight.

They’re gonna be like “I’m going on an adventure!!”
I know some people leave one cruise and go home for like a week or two and take another.
So that could be uhhhh interesting.
“Investigators are focusing on a landfill site visited by passengers, where rodents carrying the virus may have been present.”
What kinda cruise was this?
34
Expensive_Track_88226 days ago
+24
it was a wildlife and eco cruise. landfills are actually not uncommon stops for birdwatchers: this is a really normal thing. there’s a scene at a dump in the movie the big year because it’s such a part of birding culture. some species are extremely difficult to find in general, but easily found at the dump. so if you’re trying to see birds that are hard to find elsewhere, and don’t mind the ugly setting, many people stop at the landfill. rare species of gull are one example of common reasons birdwatchers do so.

We have just been incredibly lucky and had fantastic researchers catching all the other viruses before they got out. There have been a number of outbreaks and several new virus before covid, and covid was really the 2nd time a sars virus had gotten out, it's just that the first time it was stopped very aggressively. We had a vaccine for it very quickly because we had 20 years of research on a similar virus.

Deadly viruses don’t kill as many people as less deadly viruses. Sounds dumb but it’s true, they have less time to spread because the hosts are always dying. Less deadly viruses spread easier and in turn kill more people

I think the general attitude will be different, with covid the messaging was all about the collective and the herd and keeping the hospitals working; selfish people DGAF about that. This one will be a lot more animalistic with its fatality rate people will see it as directly affecting them.

I’ve seen a doctor mention that this one is unlikely to become a pandemic because its R0 is too low. Apparently you have to be in contact with a person showing symptoms for a while to be at risk.
9
badasimo6 days ago
+1
I think it could still spread out of control until there is a widely produced rapid test, then the countries with solid public health infrastructure will be able to get rid of it. It could still be very disruptive without the "I declare pandemic" technicality from the WHO.

This just in: A stewardess who came into contact with the female passenger who was taken from a flight in Johannesburg and later died on the ship, has been taken into quarantine with the Hantavirus symptoms.
A sick crew member of the ship has also been evacuated into quarantine. Both are quarantined in the Netherlands.

I say we don't have information. Even though we think we know this strain viruses mutate.
2
TheBlueFluffBall6 days ago
+1
Well, it's looks like it's transmitted between people when there is prolonged close contact with someone with symptoms.
So...we might be safe if people are aware and start self-quarantining and start wearing masks if they've been on the cruise/in contact with the currently infected.
The people who cyrrently remain on the cruise will be tested when they call port at the Canary Islands so let's hope the number of people actually infected is low.
At least I know what to do now when I see rat droppings...or maybe any wild animal dropping for that matter....
1
Turd_Fergusons_6 days ago
+2
Good points all. What I am confused about is why isn't this spreading around Argentina, from where ship had departed and was presumably docked for some period of time. Perhaps I am wrong on it originating from Argentina. However Hanta Virus isn't something a population builds an immunity to. So where are the South American cases? I am just genuinely asking the sub, not advocating any conspiracy theories or anything. I guess we'll know in a few weeks.
2

Why is everyone saying “don’t worry it’s only transmitted person to person by extremely close contact” but the flight attendant who is sick was quote “briefly” interacting with the Dutch woman who did in the airport. This wasn’t the flight she was on from St Helena to Johannesburg, this was the flight from Johannesburg to Netherlands she boarded briefly and was deemed too sick to fly and kicked off. So the interaction was brief yet the flight attendant is positive. This doesn’t sound like extremely close contact, this sounds like how colds, flu, stomach bug etc would pass from person to person.

Can we not mandate a vaccine this time? I fully support them, and make sure to stay up to date. I just feel for my poor freedom loving folk who were put off by the previous mandates. In fact, we can let them get natural immunity that they all love so much. We can even get them all together so they can become immune the way God intended. Like chicken pox parties.
