Long, long, long time listener, first time caller. Thought it's high time I made a contribution to this sub-listnook that has given me so much over the years...
I am halfway through a cover to cover re-watch of Babylon Berlin having completed season two and about to commence season three. I don't have the words to describe the quality of this magnificent program; needless to say, if you've considered watching it or if you are looking for a quality series, Babylon Berlin is worth your time.
During this re-watch, I've been able to enjoy the technical side a great deal more as the story is familiar. The staging and production values are exquisite. It *feels* like the time. You *feel* as though you're there, living the life of the characters. Some of the scene set-ups and cinematography qualities are Hitchcock worthy. Seriously. It's that good.
The language barrier is irrelevant and I say that as someone who would struggle to recite ten German words.
So there's my contribution people. Babylon Berlin. Probably makes my all-time, desert island top 20 if not top 10.
Peace.
From Melbourne, Australia.
Netflix in the US dropped this show a few years ago. I’m not sure the entire series is available on one platform now. — it seems to get shuffled around. 😕

This and My Brilliant Friend would be a bigger shows in America if they weren't such little bitches about reading subtitles.
Edit: grammar

Just finished season 4 few months ago and been thinking about doing rewatch myself before final season drops. You're absolutely right about production values - the attention to detail in every single frame is insane. I remember watching some behind-scenes stuff and they basically rebuilt entire blocks of 1920s Berlin, not just facades but actual functioning spaces
The way they handle the political tension building up is masterful too. You can feel everything slowly falling apart even when characters are just having normal conversations. And Charlotte's character development through all seasons... chef's kiss
Never thought I'd be so invested in German period drama but here we are. Now I'm definitely doing that rewatch, thanks for the push!

The way I have seen so much of my own frailties in Rath's journey so far this re-watch has astounded me.

I have an embarrassing confession to make: *Babylon Berlin* is the only show where I ever turned off the subtitles and watched the English dub, instead. And it was because of the production values! I just found myself repeatedly being distracted by an amazing looking art-deco lamp in the background of a scene, or some incredibly interesting looking painting on the wall of some character’s house, or somebody’s vintage hat - and I couldn’t look at all that cool stuff while reading the subtitles at the same time.
I think I watched most it *with* subs, but I watched fairly long stretches of it in the dub and it was simply because the set design was so well done that it was a distraction to my eyes!

I'm hoping my brief gives it the little nudge it needs. I say this a genuine fan of great television; Babylon Berlin is up there. If you get the chance, give it a go.

F****** amazing show. Production values like golden age Spielberg period piece. Great acting, great writing. It should get more love than it does.

Babylon berlin is one of the best shows I've ever seen. So excited for season 5.
When season 4 came out in Germany but wasn't released on Netlix in the US, I bought a region-free DVD player to watch it without hesitation.

Babylon Berlin is one of my favorite shows. I've already watched it twice myself.
Beyond what you listed, there are very few shows / movies that cover this period in time in Germany. The interwar years are incredibly fascinating. The post-war societal changes and political ideologies that come after WWI which cause various pieces that fall into place to setup WWII.
If you like the show, and you enjoy history, I recommend getting additional background information on this period of time from the youtube WWII channel (Timeghost). They have two separate series about the Interwar years:
[Between 2 Wars](https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLrG5J-K5AYAU1R-HeWSfY2D1jy_sEssNG)
[Between 2 Wars: Zeitgeist!](https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLrG5J-K5AYAXLXjOzrr8pzqZ8ngJqcfjo)

This was/is an amazing show of a very sparsely covered time in world history. Lots of resonance for today given the global rise of fascism. Highly recommended,

What about the language? Are there English subtitles available now? I remember that not being the case. Though I think my German is good enough now to handle it. Though I would appreciate German subtitles then. Do those exist? I've watched some of it years ago, amazing show!

I thought this show got cancelled after season 2 or 3. Didn’t know there was a season 4 let alone season 5. I’m honestly shocked I somehow for years never heard about this show, I’m pretty plugged into tv.

I'm under the impression that the author of the book series this is based on is going to take it to World War II. Geron acting as a witness to the rise of the nazis. As the last season was around the time of The Depression, are we getting a compressed timeline? What do we think the new arc is?

It is already confirmed that the fifth season will cover the last weeks of democracy in Germany until the election of Hitler as chancellor in March 1933. So there will be a two-year gap between seasons 4 and 5, but the series won’t go as far as the books do (they end in 1938).
