My grandma raised me also and passed last year. Very sad to hear. Grandmas are so special

Truly a tragic experience to watch a loved one descend mentally like this.

My dad’s going through it now. Terribly sad to see what happens to a person. You almost have to see somebody go through it to understand.

My dad designated me as his POA and put me in charge of his affairs. Being that person, I was always the person they called when something happened to him. He had to live with me a couple of times when he got too bad to live with his girlfriend. Consequently, he is really distrustful of me and always calls me a b****** when he sees me. I still have to manage his affairs, but I do try to limit going to see him because I know it’ll be upsetting for him. I also don’t take my kids to see him anymore.

My dad’s been showing signs. Both his brother and sister had it and I’m his primary carer and we’ve grown closer than ever the last few years. Dreading it. Have another assessment/test in a couple of months.

I feel bad for him! I read his Wikipedia bio and his childhood was hard.

My grandma has dementia and it made her into the most vile person I've known. We don't talk anymore

Mine was the opposite. She was vile, all kinds of abusive to her kids and her grandkids. Now she can’t remember who we are and is as sweet as can be. She didn’t say I love you to any of her grandkids until she started losing it.

My grandmother helped watch me for most of the 80’s and is in the same condition. I get it and I feel for the guy.

Mine too Barry, mine too. She's been having episodes where she doesn't recognise my granddad anymore, and I've been noticing her decision-making getting sloppier and weirder for a while. She's not allowed to touch the calendar anymore because she keeps marking off days weeks ahead. Won't go to the doctors of course...her and her damn stubbornness. I wish she'd listen to any of us. It was such a fight just to get her to use hearing aids when her hearing starting getting really bad. Like Barry's grandma, my grandma raised me and has essentially been my mother at least since I was 12. It was devastating listening to her get herself so worked up about these delusions that the man in her house wasn't her husband and crying wondering where he was. At least she seems to have come to trust the "stranger" enough that she doesn't seem to get as upset when she has episodes where she can't recognise him anymore.

3 of my grandparents are suffering from alzheimers or dementia at the moment. It’s the worst, all the memories of who they were just get shredded up and replaced with the melancholy of watching their personality and knowledge dissolve. F*** Alzheimers, Dementia and Parkinsons. Cruel conditions.

There's usually only one way dementia goes

His what or who? What is with the random apostrophes?

I mean, do you really "battle" dementia? It's not really a fight...

DanDantheModMan Apr 5, 2026 +2
What’s your point?

NotAPreppie Apr 5, 2026 -4
When we battle things, it's usually because it can be beaten. Dementia is just a slow, forgetful slide into death. Couching it in terms of a "valiant struggle" is problematic and puts the onus of failure on the victim.
