Being on a reality show might bring unwelcome remarks

My thoughts exactly. You put yourself in the public domain for financial gain. The gloves are off after that.

It's kind of hard to raise awareness about a highly stigmatized disorder if you hide from the public though. And the vast majority of people in existence have no choice but to put themselves in the public domain for financial gain. It's called "getting a job." As far as bullying and mockery goes, this probably isn't her first rodeo so I don't think she's surprised by the way people react to her. Sure she could just stay home all day and hide from other people but that sounds miserable. Putting herself out there and calling people on their bullshit sounds like a better option to me 🤷♀️

What a terrible perspective. Just because someone is in the public domain doesn’t mean they should be okay with being mocked for their disabilities. Would you say that about a wheelchair user or someone with Down’s syndrome?

If they took a payday for being on television with that condition, absolutely. I’ll never feel sorry for someone who put themselves in that position for monetary gain.

So just to be clear - because right now you are coming off as an edgy teenager - you don't feel bad for anyone who receives racism or sexism directed at them if they have been paid to be on television? That is your legitimate stance?

Read the title of the thread. Nothing was said about racism or sexism.

You did. You said:

Please explain to me how making fun of Baylen and her Tourette syndrome is racism and sexism?
She agreed to be on television showcasing her condition for money. At that point you have to take what is said after that, the good and the bad.
-3
Equivalent_Task_8825Mar 19, 2026
+4
Your assertion was that by being on television and getting paid you are opening yourself up for abuse and therefore it is acceptable. Why would ypu have different standards about racism and sexism? If someone was paid to appear on a show that highlights the racism they face would you be okay with the abuse they faced? What makes that different?

It's one thing to drag a public figure for questionable choices or behavior, but mocking someone for a medical issue or disorder is just being a crappy person.

Public spotlight, not domain. Domain is a legal term, not applicable here.

BINGO! But there’s an entire generation who has grown to adulthood if not maturity, who firmly believe there should never be personal consequences for anything. How dare anyone, especially after they waved their trump card🙄.

The amount of people here who are defending the inappropriate behaviour of mocking a disability is absolutely disappointing and disheartening.
Yes there's a TV show centred on her, living with this disability. That does NOT give permission to anyone to make fun of her or anyone with Tourettes, or any other disability.
If this was someone else's show allowing us to see the lived experience of living with other disabilities such as being a quadriplegic, a wheelchair user, having Down's Syndrome, Muscular Dystrophe, ALS, Multiple Sclerosis, CFS, Fibromyalgia, being deaf or unable to speak etc etc etc... would you mock that person too?
If you ever knew or loved someone with Tourettes you would know just how debilitating it is to manage daily life and exactly how unkind you are for invalidating Baylen's condition and people like her.

Equally gross all the people saying "it's so obvious she's faking it!!"
4
Equivalent_Task_8825Mar 19, 2026

There are definitely people who have faked Tourette's. There are also many, many more people actually living with Tourette's who have been accused of faking it when they obviously were not.
People are grossly undereducated about Tourette's.

I've been watching the docuseries intently. There's conversation about her presentation and the particulars about her tourettes. There's one meeting with a neurologist that is shown, which appears to be heavily edited, but there is talk about how OCD and ADHD can influence these presentations.
My take away was that the tics are tics, however with OCD the tics are taken an extra step. "I have to finish."

I was thinking that earlier today. Saw a clip of her saying, “Hell nah” in response to something her boyfriend said and then she said, “I have to do it three more times” and it did feel like there was something additional happening there.

I don't know who this particular person is but other people in the space have also faced the faking it criticism. Sweet Anita has videos about it, I know Ethan Klein has talked about it too and of course the British guy from the BAFTAs a few weeks ago.
While I can't comment on Baylen Dupree the overall sentiment from people with tourettes is that these accusations of faking it makes life much harder for them and specifically makes awareness and understanding of what is usually embarrassing for the sufferer harder to come by.

You can disagree with his politics ( I definitely do sometimes) but to see the amount of ableist nonsense coming from left-leaning people was so scary to see. Because he was on the wrong side they thought it was okay to accuse him of lying and making ableist comments about him having his ticks because he is doing drugs.
Any creator that didn't ban that type of talk in their chat or who worse peddled it themselves lost a lot of respect from me.

Ya know what, I’m glad someone said it. Ive seen clips and, to my eye, it always feels like she’s pausing before her tics. There’s something just off, it doesn’t feel truly involuntary
19
d-j-9898Mar 18, 2026
+38
Because tourettes isn't strictly involuntary. Think of it like OCD where there's a building urge to perform a compulsive action. Sufferers can fight it off for a bit but eventually the discomfort will get too much for them to resist.

She tries sometimes and then it gets really uncomfortable for her. She equated it to trying not to blink. Try it. Try not blinking for as long as possible, while only thinking about needing to blink. That's what it feels like to hold back tics.

theroadbeyondMar 19, 2026
I feel like she exaggerates the real tics. A sneeze is involuntary but my brother yelling ah shit at the same time is not. I believe she has tics I also believes she plays them up for laughs and the attention on the cameras thats why she repeats the ones her fans find funny.

I wouldn’t exactly say that I am an expert. However, I am a special education teacher. Have been for 30 years. I have several kids with Tourette syndrome each and every year. I work very closely with them as well as their specialists. I sit in on their reviews. I am more than familiar with the disorder. In all of my years working with these delightful young teens I have never come across such obnoxious behavior. Why? Well, that’s very simple. It’s bc their behavior is not intentional. Do I firmly believe that Baylen in fact does have Tourette Syndrome? Absolutely. However, her extreme behavior is manufactured. Not just by Baylen but her family and her production team as well. Extreme, wild, obnoxious behavior is what sells. Unfortunately. We can all thank “Girls Gone Wild” for that.

If you do that you have to accept the fact that people are going to make it hurtful and in this case a lot just think they are joining in on the “fun”.

We shouldn’t mock anybody with disabilities they can’t control. People with tics can’t control those. We can control when we say her tics. Choose wisely.

??? “The audacity she has to star in a reality show centered around raising awareness to the challenges in navigating the world with Tourette’s syndrome and advocating yourself but also be upset when people make fun of her disability that is classically largely misunderstood.” Do you hear yourself? Why do people act like being in the public eye means you’re not allowed to ever feel bad when the public ridicules you?? Especially for something that you physically cannot control?? May as well say she’s asking for it.
