BB-8 puppeteer Brian Herring says the Star Wars sequels are "no more polarizing than the prequels were" and "in 10 years' time" they'll be loved like the prequels, too

Somehow, this argument returned.

I don't think anyone ever grew to love Jar Jar Binks, even with all this extra time.

No one grew to love him, but little kids who thought he was funny are now adults with kids of their own

I was 8 or so when those movies released. 8 year olds were absolutely Jar Jar Binks fans. We would all be talking like him in school.

People were unironically hyped for this.

Man I loved the guy when I watched it as a kid. Lots of kids back then just never had the means to spread hatred or love for the character. So glad the actor got to be in the Mandalorian.

That might be so, even still, I like Jar Jar Binks better than the insane "fans" that bullied Jar Jar's actor Ahmed Best to near suicide. F*** them.

The prequels I think were hugely salvaged by the related media (comics, The Clone Wars, etc), and Disney just can’t make that work for the sequels. Even Mando feels more like an OT sequel than a ST prequel
249
firemiketomlinpls68 Mar 24, 2026 +107
There’s nothing to do with the sequels.  Prequels were trash, but you had cool looking characters and settings to work with. The sequels? Not so much. Is anyone going watch a spinoff about rose?
107
SmokeyJoescafe Mar 24, 2026 +135
The prequels at least had a coherent story for the whole trilogy. The sequels had a new hope 2.0, a movie that seemed designed to please no one but the director and shut the door on any and everything set up in the previous movie, and a finale that screamed “oh c***, just pull some ideas from legends material, I guess.” “Ok, which ones?” “Yes.”
135
Murasasme Mar 25, 2026 +10
Also while the story of the prequels is trash, the lightsaber fights were probably the best in all of live action Star Wars, which for a small kid like me at the time, it was all it took to love them. Meanwhile the only thing I would consider memorable from the sequels is the Holdo maneuver
10
entertainman Mar 25, 2026 +27
The story isn’t trash. The dialog is. The editing isn’t very tight. The story is one of the parts that works. Along with about half the acting. And the music. And the world building. And the effects, for the time.
27
Puzzle-Necked Mar 25, 2026 +6
Meh, Anakin's fall and turning evil was awkwardly done. And Padame dying of a broken heart was cringe as hell. And everybody who wasn't Palpatine acted like they just toom a bottle of Xanax
6
Dagobahmaster Mar 25, 2026 +3
Those are still dialogue focused story parts though. If you’ve rewatched it recently I’d bet you’d appreciate the plot of obiwan’s detective work uncovering the clone war / palpatine conspiracy. Secret army. Count dookus part. Order 66. You just have to skip or mute the parts in Naboo…they’re bad on their own but being stripped to death for memes it feels even worse for immersion purposes
3
entertainman Mar 25, 2026 +4
and yet Debbie Reynolds actually died of a broken heart

Giovan_Doza Mar 24, 2026 +13
Yeah...put one of the least popular characters to make a point, I would argue Darth maul had nothing going for him except looking cool and they made a character out of him, what about Andor? He was not in the prequels and he is the lead of the best star wars there is
13
Jozsef_K Mar 25, 2026 +2
At least Maul had cool looks and a unique lightsaber while Andor was already an interesting but underdeveloped character in a liked movie
2
joe_beardon Mar 24, 2026 +5
The prequels weren't trash, I would argue only Clone Wars is super weak compared to the originals. And besides they are too closely linked to the story of the first 3 movies to become irrelevant the same way the sequels are. Plus the characters that are in both are consistent, Obi Wan still acts like Ben Kenobi, Yoda acts like Yoda etc. You don't have anything even close to the sequels where Luke's entire personality is different or where Leah can do magic
5
Malky Mar 25, 2026 +9
Yoda, specifically, does *not* act like Yoda. He is inconsistent with the Yoda portrayed in Empire.
9
WabbitFire Mar 25, 2026 +9
Attack of the Clones might be worse than any of the ST, at best it's still worse than the first two.
9
KeySlimePies Mar 25, 2026 +6
I never physically cringed watching a movie until I saw AotC in theaters. And I was just a kid so it was truly that bad
6
Holiday_Jeweler_4819 Mar 25, 2026 +2
Also even though I’m not a fan of the prequels they had a story that made sense and was at least semi well thought out even if the execution was lacking. The sequels are a disjointed mess and it’s very obvious they were coming up with the story as there were going, They killed off the big bad guy in the second movie then just say “oh I guess Palpatine” is back 🤷🏿‍♂️, what a cop out.
2
CigarLover Mar 24, 2026 +23
Ouch… This will be the part when we come to the conclusion that perhaps George knows what’s he is doing when it comes to his OWN lore? Nah!!!
23
CaliggyJack Mar 24, 2026 +14
His idea for the sequel trilogy was so cool but it would have been relentlessly bashed by the fandom because it delves further into the science of the force and not "Hurr hurr lightsaber go brr".
14
Trickster289 Mar 25, 2026 +2
People would have hated his sequel trilogy idea too tbh. Darth Maul is cool but he was going to be the sith master, that'd have felt a bit underwhelming. As cool of a character as he is he's no Palpatine. Darth Talon from extended media was going to be his apprentice. Retconning extended media would have angered fans and again she's no Vader.

Prequels have hot padme and cool lightsaber fights/space battles/stupid droids. What do sequels have??
138
SunOFflynn66 Mar 25, 2026 +60
And that's a thing. The Prequels WERE a MESS--but underneath it all were some great things. It's George unleashed, when they needed someone to reign him and create coherence. They ended on a high note with Revenge of the Sith. It's messy, rushed at points, yet it was, even at the time, considered a fitting end to the Star Wars saga. The Sequels were always a blatant corporate product designed to milk a franchise. We're still flying X-Wings. The bad guys are still Storm Troopers. There are STILL no Jedi. And that's because, again, it's trying to nostalgia ride the Originals. Without a plan.
60
Alundra828 Mar 25, 2026 +13
That last sentence is still the most perplexing thing about all of this. There was no plan. Like, at all. That is so cosmically insane to me that I don't think that to this day I fully comprehend that they bought this IP for billions, and didn't even spent the time to organize a week to get writers in a room to design an overarching story arc. Like, I could have a child, drop it on its head, give it that job for it's 3rd birthday, and it would still handle this better than Disney. It's so perplexing...
13
cornholio6966 Mar 25, 2026 +2
Precisely. The prequels had lots of good ideas (some poorly executed) and they ended with the best film by a considerable margin. RoS is a disaster and soured me on the other two films that I largely liked.

The guy who laid down his saber and sacrificed his life multiple times for his friends and family, and accepted death to try and convert his genocidal father. The man who did all of that, has a funky feeling and decides to sneak into his nephews room and play light saber chicken. F****** stupid. God the sequels piss me off so muxh
14
Smart_Ass_Dave Mar 25, 2026 +2
> The guy who laid down his saber and sacrificed his life multiple times for his friends and family, and accepted death to try and convert his genocidal father. Immediately after losing his shit and coming a hairs breadth from falling to the dark side. Luke Skywalker is my favorite example of a "pacifist action hero" and the idea that he's incapable of making mistakes or getting angry is absolutely baffling to me.

KingLarry46th Mar 25, 2026 +12
Standing over him while he's sleeping, saber ignited, is more than a passing thought
12
dakilazical_253 Mar 25, 2026 +2
In the movie Luke literally describes it as a passing thought

Poku115 Mar 25, 2026 +4
Ever heard of unreliable narrator kid? Every story has 3 versions, what he says, what ben says, and what really happened.
4
saskatchewan_kenobi Mar 25, 2026 +4
That was clearly outlined in the move. First version ben solo attacks, second version ben wakes up to luke trying to kill him and third shows the truth. Luke lights the lightsaber for a second and the feeling passes, but its too late.

The prequels have their issues, but the sequels don't even have a coherent storyline. You can see the script flip flopping between films
128
BradBradley1 Mar 24, 2026 +70
“Anyone can be a Jedi.” “Nah, you actually are kinda usually born into it after all.” “Snoke is this trilogy’s Palpatine.” “Uh, this is a tough one but please stay with me - Palpatine is actually the Palpatine of this trilogy too. We’re as surprised as anyone.” “Finn is a great representation of how even a bad guy can become a hero and help save the universe.” “Wait, who is Finn? Who is the Rose lady too? Who is Officer Fantasm? We genuinely don’t know what to do with these nobodies.” “Rey and Kylo have this really interesting dynamic based on their opposing views of the force.” “People just really wanna see em smooching though, so that’s how we’ll end the trilogy.”  The entire trilogy is just so fundamentally disjointed, I don’t see how it’ll become a beloved  but flawed classic down the line like how a lot of people think of the prequels. JJ and Rian Johnson delivered almost nearly zero cohesion from one movie to the next and it legitimately made the overarching message of the sequel trilogy a lot of contradictory nonsense. I also think that media is so disjointed now with the internet and streaming, it’ll be hard for any movie or TV show to carry the same cultural phenomenon that Star Wars had back when in the 90s and before.
70
SuperVaderMinion Mar 25, 2026 +3
Disney got so spooked by the reactionary and whiny bashing of episode 8 that they reversed course hard and retconned basically all of Rian's bolder choices. So in the end they made literally nobody happy
3
Dangle76 Mar 24, 2026 +266
The prequels actually had a cohesive story throughout them. The dialogue may have been terrible, there may have been plot holes, but it wouldn’t have worked without all 3 movies. You can completely drop episode 8 and nothing changes lol, not to mention there was no cohesion between any of them.
266
Past-Cap-1889 Mar 24, 2026 +55
Prequels also have loads of supplemental material from books, comics, on top of animated shows and live action series.
55
PackageOk4947 Mar 24, 2026 +22
But according to Kathy, none of that existed...
22
Gnomey_dont_u_knowme Mar 24, 2026 +67
Yes, the prequels were a trilogy. The sequels were three movies with some of the same characters.
67
Special-Garlic1203 Mar 25, 2026 +5
Yeah one was a sincere effort from a man who can't write dialogue, the other was corporate slop
5
Jumpy_Minute Mar 24, 2026 +18
Literally one of the most common criticisms of the prequels when they came out was how convoluted the plot was
18
Vastergoth Mar 24, 2026 +21
Which I think really boils down to people complaining there was "too much politics involved" that made it convoluted the story is rather straightforward.
21
wentwj Mar 25, 2026 +4
I haven't heard anyone seriously complain bout the politics. There's actually very little "politics" in the movie outside of a saturday morning cartoon style view of a senate. It's not a political thriller or anything. As others have mentioned Episode 1 could be removed, it's effectively a pre-story to the prequel. Attack of the Clones has the worst plot of any Star Wars film. Literally almost no one can actually explain how or why the Clones were ordered. The whole Jango storyline and the assassin storyline make no sense. It's all a silly macguffin to set up a movie that in retrospect once we reach the conclusion is just downright nonsense. Revenge of the Sith is held up as the best, and it is, but the bar is low. Anakin's entire fall is rushed and silly, when it should have been the entire point of the trilogy. Basically the two biggest softballs of the prequels: Anakin's downfall, and the Clone Wars. Is pretty much entirely fumbled in the films. If cartoons weren't made around this area that retconned the Clones and fleshed everything out these movies would not be well received even today.
4
guiltyofnothing Mar 24, 2026 +9
Yeah, I don’t remember anyone complaining that the problem with Phantom Menace was “not enough lore.” People hated it when it came out because it was boring with flat characters.
9
StickyMcdoodle Mar 25, 2026 +5
This is one of the dumbest arguments for the prequels. You could absolutely drop the phantom menace from the trilogy and lose nothing. The rest of the story is told in a cartoon between the other movies. The "cohesive" part of the story was told in A New Hope by ObiWan in 2 minutes. George couldn't even be bothered to make any of that story fit with his prequels. The argument that "at least the prequels had other media to fill in the blanks" is a positive is wild to me. The other media was REQUIRED because the prequels fail on just about every level of cinematic story telling and they needed all this extra nonsense to work (and they still don't). I have a lot of things to say about the sequels, but it's a complete story that doesn't need anything else to help it out. It might be a stupid story, but it's as complete and cohesive as the original trilogy was (which was also made up as they went along).
5
drhavehope Mar 25, 2026 +3
Please tell me how Last Jedi, that seeks to subvert Force Awakens and Rise of Skywalker that seeks to actively course-correct Last Jedi, is somehow cohesive?
3
AppalachianMusic Mar 24, 2026 +30
I doubt it. The prequels are bad, but theyre a singular vision by a crazy genius of the genre. The sequels are a corporate cash grab with no planning thay arguably killed the franchise.
30
Quirky-Skin Mar 25, 2026 +2
And the prequels still had classic characters to rely on in major roles. Sure the sequels had Han, Leia etc but nobody enjoyed how those arcs went. So you're left with Rey Palpatine (f****** ridiculous) cast aside Finn and Han Solo 2.0  (Poe) Nothing very memorable there and no lasting endearing characters like Yoda, Mace etc.
2
Sasquatcheeethree Mar 24, 2026 +23
Oh I don't think they'll be regarded the same way as the prequels. Force awakens is entertaining. Last jedi is divisive. Rise is a cash grab

Gunldesnapper Mar 24, 2026 +87
The prequels sucked. The sequels were ass.
87
prodij18 Mar 24, 2026 +33
The prequels were original and came from a place of creativity. They were still trash, but they were an honest attempt by Lucas to make art (which he failed.) This is why they are still remembered as flawed but memorably quirky. The sequels were corporate garbage made by cobbling together open nostalgia bait and the best focus group tested moments an army of accountants could buy. They will be remembered only as an example of corporate greed attempting to buy goodwill by weaponizing people’s childhood memories. If they are remembered fondly it will only because open public conversation has been subsumed entirely by Disney Corp’s army of astroturfing and bots to create an artificial consensus.
33
Proper-Emu1558 Mar 24, 2026 +12
The problem with the prequels is that they have large portions that are very boring. I don’t give a rat’s ass about trade federations. It made sense, unlike portions of the sequels. I just didn’t care.
12
yura910721 Mar 25, 2026 +2
Yeap 100%. Things that Lucas intended to do weren't necessarily bad, but execution was pretty underwhelming. It needed much better writer to handle the tragedy of Anakin(good example would be Better Call Saul: we knew what will happen to him, but they still managed to make a compelling story about how it happened) and politics.
2
Gunldesnapper Mar 24, 2026 +3

5
FreezingRobot Mar 24, 2026 +35
Here's the thing: People have been crying about "Star Wars sucks now" since Return of the Jedi. It's nothing new. However, I think there's a big difference between "this is not as good as what I grew up with" and "this is a complete mess". There's no saving the sequels because you had two different directors who absolutely hated what the other was doing. People aren't going to come around to the sequels.
35
Liverlakefc Mar 24, 2026 +1
But the prequels were also a complete mess qnd f****** terrible films
1
Fickle_Goose_4451 Mar 24, 2026 +5
They were at least one complete story. Also, people actually watched those as kids, grew up, and had some nostalgia for the movies they saw earlier in their life. My teenager and her friends haven't watched all three of the sequels, and express virtually no interest. I cant say I know tons of young people, but I dont see them getting star wars merchandise or asking for star wars games. Those all seem to be for grumpy 30+ years olds.

If it ended after the fight in the throne room and Rey had joined Kylo it would’ve been a great movie. Rey joining the dark side is an awesome unique concept for the star wars trilogy series. Maybe have Luke try and bring her back from the dark side in the 3rd movie or something like that. But no. We need a Mary Sue and to sell merchandise! She has to stay pure…and boring.
4
Redditeer28 Mar 24, 2026 +5
>Maybe have Luke try and bring her back from the dark side in the 3rd movie or something like that. So.... Return of the Jedi again? >But no. We need a Mary Sue Look up what a Mary Sue is. Rey isn't one.
5
midtrailertrash Mar 25, 2026 +2
In ten years people aren’t going to ‘appreciate’ The Last Jedi, they’re just going to remember it as the movie that derailed the franchise and fractured the fanbase. It’s not some misunderstood masterpiece aging like wine.
2
firemiketomlinpls68 Mar 24, 2026 +20
The prequels were loved by people who watched them as kids. The clone wars show helped too, as if a show made years later written by different people “fixes” the various plot holes and issues in the prequels
20
Poku115 Mar 25, 2026 +5
And where's the kids who now "love" the sequels. Cause as someone who watched em during middle and high school, I can tell you they were my first ever time realizing "wow, just because its on theaters doesn't mean its good" No it wasnt my first bad movie, just the first boring one
5
TheAdequateKhali Mar 24, 2026 +4
If kids liking something is a determining factor to if it’s good, you could say any movie is good.
4
Monday_Jeff Mar 24, 2026 +6
A lot of kids like the sequels too. When the prequels came out adults were sending death threats to child actors and George Lucas. The kid who played Anakin had to drop out of school and had a mental breakdown in part because of the harassment. Star Wars has always had a large, toxic element in it's fanbase that don't really represent reality, no matter how loud their tantrums are.
6
crappydeli Mar 24, 2026 +24
I enjoyed The Force Awakens. The other two seemed like d*** swinging battles between the directors. The stories only served to contradict the prior films. The sequel trilogy ended up being a narrative mess with space horses thrown in for the merch people. No one will remember the sequels.
24
No-Obligation2563 Mar 24, 2026 +9
Same. I liked Force Awakens even though a lot of people were hating on it. I thought it was a decent start of a new trilogy and that it would go places because, hey, it’s Star Wars! Of course it’s all planned out right? Then I saw TLJ and pretty much stopped caring entirely about Star Wars overnight. I wasn’t super pissed, I wasn’t ranting about it online. I just stopped giving a shit. Didn’t even watch ROS.
9
Curious-Department-7 Mar 25, 2026 +4
The reason why it seemed like a good start to a new trilogy, was because it was basically a remake of a new hope. And they hadn't ruined Luke yet.
4
MemnocOTG Mar 24, 2026 +10
I feel like that’s just false. The prequels had a coherent story that continued from one installment to the next. Eventually , things could be overlooked. I just don’t see that happening with the sequels.
10
spacemanspiff1979 Mar 24, 2026 +4
Only if something even worse comes along.

They both sucked.
4
squigs Mar 24, 2026 +11
For all their flaws, I enjoyed the prequels, and Revenge Of The Sith being the best meant ending on a positive note. I think that wins a lot of fans over. The sequels ended with Rise Of Skywalker - a movie with a lot of plot holes, and a host of other issues that individually we might ignore but together are hard to gloss over.
11
metallee98 Mar 24, 2026 +4
I doubt this but we'll see. Especially because it's been 10 years already and opinions haven't really changed. Force awakens came out in 2015.

🤣🤣🤣🤣. Good joke. One set of movies have Darth Maul and Jangl Fett. The other has….Luke Skywalker being disrespected, awful lightsaber fighting from Rey and bringing back The Emperor in a Rock Concert,
5
zone_seek Mar 24, 2026 +24
Huge disagree, and the big difference here is that while the prequels might not be good films, they're at least made with an incredible amount of care, planning, and heart, by the man who created the franchise. The sequels are not only bad films, they're poorly planned corporate bullshit made as quickly as possible for the sake of recouping Disney's money as fast as they could. They are NOT the same thing. The prequels are bad in an endearing way, the sequels are bad in a way that highlights everything wrong with the modern studio movie making process.
24
Broken-Digital-Clock Mar 24, 2026 +7
People will study the failure of the sequel trilogy in film classes.
7
RedditProfileName69 Mar 24, 2026 +3
As a prequels enjoyer, I liked enough of the dialogue to ignore the shitty parts of dialogue. Plus, the saber battles, CGI, and overall cinematography were all very enjoyable for me. For me, the sequels have little to no redeeming qualities. The saber battles sucked, but more importantly the thematic betrayal of Rey being a daughter of the Emperor totally ruined any goodwill I had towards the sequels. The only part I liked was Adam Driver’s performance, as he embodied the rage and power of his character well.
3
Grand-Battle8009 Mar 25, 2026 +3
Look, the sequels took our beloved characters; Han, Luke and Leia and killed each one off in the absolute most unsatisfying and pathetic way. All the risk and effort they put in to stop the Empire was thrown out the window for poorly executed, poorly written, money grab by the studios. The sequels will never be loved because they never loved the source material in the first place.
3

The only argument I have in support of this is that every time I go to conventions I see tons of Rey cosplayers. There absolutely is an audience that likes the sequels. I just don’t know how large it really is

I watched *Attack of the Clones* with Spanish dubbing when I was traveling in Colombia. For me it was actually a lot better than the English version, because the translators smoothed-out a lot of the extremely awkward dialogue, which is the main flaw (IMO) of the prequels.... "*I don’t like sand. It’s coarse and rough and irritating… and it gets everywhere. Not like here. Here everything is soft and smooth.*"

The prequels had their flaws. The Phantom Menace was basically a kids movie, Attack of The Clones had cringeworthy love scenes with awful dialogue, and Revenge of The Sith had "NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO" The sequels? At best, The Force Awakens is like a 6/10. Hindsight ruins a lot of the set-ups. It has a few neat things, but the rest is taken from the OT, and some of the storytelling is really amateur. Episode 8 is a movie-length filler episode. Episode 9 is a disaster from start to finish with things to praise countable on a single hand. BB-8 is pretty symbolic of the whole thing, actually: More of the same with a fraction of the character and a fresh new plastic visual design.

The issue is that the Prequel Trilogy and the Sequel Trilogy are bad for different reasons. The Prequels are bad because the effects and dialogue falls short, but the story and world building are strong as ever and the trilogy is cohesive. The Sequels are bad because the story isn't there. It's all over the place, they set things up with no payoff, they introduce characters that fade into the background, and perhaps most importantly, they lessen the impact of the films that came before. The Prequels also have the advantage of getting other media to prop them up.

pumpkinspicecum Mar 25, 2026 +5
I don’t think the prequels are loved the way the original films are
5
TemporaryFortune4211 Mar 24, 2026 +3
Nah, I don’t think that’s the case.
3
Houseranger03 Mar 24, 2026 +2
I just don’t think this will ring true
2
SecretFox4632 Mar 24, 2026 +2
Yeah I can’t wait to rewatch all my favorite characters getting killed and then watching a Palpatine claim to be an honorary Skywalker at the end. lol

Toxicity246 Mar 24, 2026 +2
The problem, I feel, is the Last Jedi is not the film you make as the middle film in your trilogy. I'll give people who enjoyed it the benefit of the doubt, but you don't make that film and then course correct. You either don't make a film like the last jedi OR you have Rian carry his vision into the final film. I think Disney execs got cold feet and we got what we got.
2
Enelro Mar 24, 2026 +2
I think they are actually aging poorly. They were masked by hype when initially released, but time has revealed the lack of meaning in the plot, and the general pointlessness of the entire trilogy.
2
ParsleySlow Mar 25, 2026 +2
I call BS on that one. The second two films are unbearable, which means force awakens I never rewatch either. The whole trilogy was a massive wasted opportunity.
2
OmeletteDuFromage95 Mar 25, 2026 +2
Prequels were problematic for sure... But not to the extent that the sequels are.
2
Curious-Department-7 Mar 25, 2026 +2
Nope. In 10 years, they will still be terrible films.
2
ThatHotAsian Mar 25, 2026 +2
Ehh idk about that one chief. I've never seen a mainstream movie more disappointing than Rise of Skywalker
2
Cleanbriefs Mar 25, 2026 +2
It’s not gonna be any more loved than the last Jurassic Park with ScarJo do you even remember that one???
2
friedeggbeats Mar 25, 2026 +2
Interesting how he thinks everyone now loves the prequels.
2
individualcoffeecake Mar 25, 2026 +2
No. Horses on star destroyers, Daisy “no personality” Ridley, somehow palpatine returns, a shit ton of star destroyers out of no where.. and on and on.
2
FreeBananasForAll Mar 25, 2026 +2
The third sequel made no sense. I have no idea what the decision making was behind that but it killed any chance of these films had
2
kranitoko Mar 25, 2026 +2
They said this almost 10 years ago, and the sequels still aren't loved, so.
2
Street_Barracuda1657 Mar 25, 2026 +2
No, the answer is no they won’t.
2
matchstrike Mar 25, 2026 +2
The prequels and the sequels were both bad, but for different reasons. Please come to terms with this.
2
AnamainTHO Mar 25, 2026 +2
I really don't mind the force awakens. It was a safe star wars movie by all means but the last jedi will forever be a sore spot to me. I rather watch all the prequels than watch TLJ again.
2
Chadarius Mar 25, 2026 +2
BB-8 will be loved. Not the sequels. Honestly the prequels don't stand up either. There are only 4 Star Wars movies. Rogue One, Ep IV, V, and VI. Everything else doesn't stand up to our rose colored remembrances as kids. Lucas is one of the greatest film makers ever, when he has massive constraints and isn't surrounded by yes people.
2
KeepunaDaSchutta Mar 25, 2026 +2
Bullshit, they should be the ones considered non-canon, not the Expanded Universe
2
No-Philosopher3248 Mar 25, 2026 +2
But I still don’t love the prequels.
2
ArgumentAny4365 Mar 25, 2026 +2
Not a chance 🤣🤣🤣 I think that TLJ and RoS collectively pissed off every Star Wars fan out there.
2
Inevitable-Feed-6968 Mar 25, 2026 +2
This is incorrect
2
juscoo Mar 25, 2026 +2
If anything more people are realizing how much they dislike them over time lol
2
bofis Mar 25, 2026 +2
That assumes anyone loves the prequels... I already like the sequel trilogy more than the prequels and time hasn't made me like the prequels any more certainly, it just made me also hate the Special Editions and only ever watch the original cuts now.
2
PompousDude Mar 26, 2026 +1
This is one of the reasons I f****** hate media revisionism. It attempts to invalidate criticisms and just say "don't worry bro, you may think it's shit now but just wait a few years or a decade and it'll be good." None of the issues or flaws of the prequels has changed. They are still ass, it's just more important to like them now to validate your identity to a fandom. The sequels will be the same.
1
def_tom Mar 24, 2026 +5
Ehhhh, I kinda don't think so.
5
muscleLAMP Mar 24, 2026 +3
Star Wars and Empire Strikes back were good. Everything since has just been lightsaber toy product placement.
3
WatTambor420 Mar 24, 2026 +5
I bet that sentiment does eventually happen. Both the prequels and sequels are awful. But a huge amount of people who saw them as kids will look back and think “I enjoyed that part of my life, but yeah the movies kinda sucked” Because that’s essentially what happened to the prequels. People didn’t start thinking they were good, they were thinking the life context they had for those movies was good and they’ll yearn for it.
5
Howling_Mad_Man Mar 24, 2026 +2
Even the Snyder movies have adamant defenders. Sure, why not these too.
2
CrissBliss Mar 24, 2026 +2
I agree. The fandom is incredibly fickle, and in the next generation always appreciates them more.
2
Hungry_Night9801 Mar 24, 2026 +2
I still hate the prequels tho.
2
bbibbyrapskyle1975 Mar 24, 2026 +1
I enjoyed the prequels (with the exception of JarJar and the pod racing taking up a lot of time) and I still enjoy them to this day. Never understood all the hate. The sequels are wildly inconsistent in their tone (switching directors, studio interference) and while I don't completely hate them, they very much felt like movies created by a committee. There is some solid cinematography, but the dialogue isn't great and the plot takes a dive and implodes by the third film.
1
Xeroxenfree Mar 24, 2026 +1
Nah. I have my same critiques of the prequels now as I did then. Haden still acted badly in E2, the dialog for the entire trilogy was dog shit. And all in all wasnt worth decanonizing EU for.
1
_ChipWhitley_ Mar 24, 2026 +1
I rewatched 7, 8, and 9 recently and holy f*** are those movies bad. I used to think they were just ok, but this time it felt like a chore getting through them.
1
Devolutionator Mar 24, 2026 +1
You can make a halfway decent movie between the three prequels. Didn't Zach braff already do that?
1
Wizchine Mar 24, 2026 +1
Such a vast universe where so many better stories could have been told.
1
RonSwanson069 Mar 24, 2026 +1
I have no data to back this up, but I feel like the prequels completely outdid the sequels in the ultimate metric. Toy sales.
1
thrillho613 Mar 24, 2026 +1
Only thing I love is Babu Frik.
1
goteamventure42 Mar 24, 2026 +1
Stick to puppets Brian
1
Khromecowboy Mar 24, 2026 +1
It’s already been ten years they’re still not loved. Maybe we’ll check again every decade. It should also be noted that the prequels always had a dedicated fan base and were much more successful at the time than the sequel have been since force awakens released.
1
Ok_Cartographer_2811 Mar 24, 2026 +1
Nope. They fucked it up beyond repair
1
skrrtalrrt Mar 24, 2026 +1
The only good star wars films are Empire Strikes Back, A New Hope, and the last 40ish minutes of Revenge of the Sith.
1
Sharp-Jackfruit825 Mar 24, 2026 +1
I liked the prequels I'll stand by that app 3 they were all great in their own zany ways
1
seefourslam Mar 24, 2026 +1
Rise is easily the worst Star Wars movie ever made.. actual gibberish.
1
VinylHighway Mar 24, 2026 +1
I honestly pretend nothing exists after return of the Jedi or before a new hope.
1
trxrider500 Mar 24, 2026 +1
The sequel trilogy was trash and everyone knows it. Even Disney is removing the sequel trilogy stuff from their theme parks.
1
LiluLay Mar 24, 2026 +1
The only thing that made the prequels beloved in time was the considerable characterization achieved by the clone wars animated series. Without that I do not believe they would be as well received as they are now.
1
Wolvesinthestreet Mar 24, 2026 +1
Yeah all the amazing lightsaber battles in the sequels I will look fondly back on them.
1
PaleontologistNo2625 Mar 24, 2026 +1
I still think they all suck soooo
1
PedestrianCyclist Mar 24, 2026 +1
Both are subpar film trilogies.
1
Dry_Jellyfish641 Mar 24, 2026 +1
I feel it’s the opposite, as time goes by people stop pretending the sequels were good.
1
Absalom98 Mar 24, 2026 +1
People don't love the prequels though?
1
hashtaglurking Mar 24, 2026 +1
I would pick the sequels over the prequels. Anytime. Any day. 24/7.
1
Embedded_Vagabond Mar 24, 2026 +1
F*** no! The sequel story was ass
1
Classh0le Mar 24, 2026 +1
Over time everything is good! Nothing made is ever not good!
1
CigarLover Mar 24, 2026 +1
This is not a “hot take” We, the community, became self aware of this once the prequels started to get some love years after the fact.
1
Bubush Mar 24, 2026 +1
The problem here is that he’s assuming that the prequels are loved now; sure, there’s some revisionism here and there, but overall opinion hasn’t really changed.
1
PmMeYourNiceBehind Mar 24, 2026 +1
We’re already almost 10 years out from the entire trilogy being out..
1
Kcuftidderr Mar 24, 2026 +1
Are the prequels really loved? Or is it a joke mixed with nostalgia? That could happen to newer ones
1
Slurpeepatch Mar 24, 2026 +1
With how bad revisionist film criticism has gotten with trying to convince people that the Star Wars prequels and Spider-Man 3 are these underrated masterpieces whose genius were too much for people to comprehend back in the day, I’m actually kind of inclined to agree with these comments.
1
Mononugget Mar 24, 2026 +1
The prequels are beloved? Since when? I missed the memo
1
theRobomonster Mar 24, 2026 +1
I loved the prequels because I got to see them in theaters and they were made for kids my age. I also didn’t mind the sequels, though I would have preferred they told a better story than what amounted to a retread “safe” option they went with. I respect why they tried to do but ultimately failed to achieve.
1
CaliggyJack Mar 24, 2026 +1
The Phantom Menace is a masterpiece.
1
tombatron Mar 24, 2026 +1
I think I’ve seen the prequel and sequels once each. They were fine or whatever. But the original trilogy… I’ve seen it countless times and it’s just wonderful.
1
Denjek Mar 24, 2026 +1
The prequels are loved??
1
in9ram Mar 24, 2026 +1
Never started loving the prequels. So i guess still a lot longer before i start loving the sequels.
1
JustExperience1212 Mar 24, 2026 +1
I don’t even remember what happened in the JJ Abrams Star Wars trilogy
1
Asluckwouldnthaveit Mar 24, 2026 +1
Still hate the prequels (they are pure shit) and will never not hate the sequels. All six of those films are bad.
