A 3 year gap between shows is bound to kill hype. And on top of that its an anthology show.

An anthology should make a large gap *less* relevant because it's not you're relying on people to remain excited about specific characters or story beats.
EDIT: I've never heard anyone say they weren't excited about The White Lotus because of the gap between seasons.

It was about year between 1 & 2.
I feel like 3 did suffer from the gap in other ways. People think built it up in their heads to be something it wasn’t, and when season 3 was a bunch of shitty people getting caught up in a tangle of one another’s lies or ineptitudes they acted like it was missing something.

If I had to guess I'd say it's a mix of a couple of factors. One is the 3 year gap between seasons, but also, the fact that it's an anthology a lot of people probably didn't even realize a second season was coming. Then I don't know how good the promotion leading into it was, I knew it was coming and even I didn't realize it was coming this week.
I'm interested to see if the numbers go up as word of mouth spreads, or if people just don't care anymore.

I’m sure there’s a reason they didn’t advertise it in the trailer, but that was the main reason I didn’t really want to watch the second season TBH. It just seemed (from the trailer and the more famous cast that got announced) like a show that used Asian representation in its first season to differentiate itself and then once it got a second season, it abandoned all that for non-Asian star power. And what I loved about the first season is while the characters were Asian, it wasn’t everything about them.
It wasn’t until I listened to a review podcast about the show (because I assumed I wasn’t going to watch) where they said they actually felt like there was *more* diverse Asian representation this season that I paused and decided to give this season a chance. But I wonder if there are others like me.

The streamers all release their good stuff for the year, so there's like multiple shows worth following simultaneously for a few weeks.
Then they all run out and it's a content drought for the rest of the year with a few random shows.

It felt like the predominantly Asian-American cast was also kind of a big deal, hit at a time where that representation in American media was starting to get real appreciation. Not slander just reality. Steven Yeun was on a tv show that was rivaling the NFL in viewership at one point, his characters death also kinda killed the show lol.
Carey Mulligan is great, however she always done indie and lower budget projects, Great Gasby probably her biggest movie. Oscar Isaac been in some big stuff but most of those were supporting roles.
Edit; just a heads up , I’m not saying Steven is a bigger name than Oscar. I’m saying the difference in their popularity isn’t big enough where Oscar would boost the shows viewership.
41

I do feel like there's a big difference between TV appeal and movie appeal, even in this day and age where there isn't a big split in actors doing one or the other like there used to be. It's not about how big a name is, but about how much an audience wants to tune in to see them on a regular basis which is different from seeing someone in a movie maybe like once a year or whatever.
To your point, Steven Yeun was a huge part of the success of The Walking Dead which put up crazy TV numbers even in the age of streaming, and helped keep those numbers up for YEARS. People felt a kinship to him/his character because of that level of familiarity, which is not something you tend to get with big movie stars because their work tends to be more sporadic. Theirs is a more aspirational celebrity, vs Yeun's more approachable relatable celebrity.

I’m like 6 episodes in, and it’s mostly pretty good, but I don’t like the cast as much, and the conflict isn’t nearly as clear. The “Beef” is split between multiple 2v2 teams that seem to change, but it’s also kinda 1v1v1v1. Idk. And the whole Korean Chairwoman plot feels like it could be cut completely and nothing would have changed. Idk.

It's kind of like binging True Crime documentaries. They're riveting, intriguing, and fascinate a large swath of people. However, long term, constant exposure has an effect in your psyche. It seems to be a trend lately in movies, TV, books, news, etc: conflict, gaslighting, drama.

They've done a ton of advertising for Beef, in the past few months. Hell, I even got 4 emails about upcoming shows, where Beef was the "headliner" of them, just in the 2 weeks leading up to the release - as well as a dedicated email just for the show, when it went live.
They actually do this a lot, for upcoming shows.

The ending is bald, it took me a minute but I liked how thought provoking it is.
The entire show, Austin is the only one being actually smart, knowledgeable and genuinely kind. You gotta be rooting for him but in the end, he's just another human who choses wealth and power over what is right. She wasn't even actually pregnant at that point, so he really picked siding with the bad guys for a comfortable future, rather than fighting them with the woman he loves.
He's just as weak and corruptible as the next guy. And the final scene suggests he's not happy at all because of that.

It’s so weird you say he was smart, knowledgeable and kind. I saw him as slow, a grifter and self centred! Whenever he seemed to go towards the good it appeared to be motivated by fear. It’s funny how differently the same piece of media can be perceived by two different people.

You're right on, and the ending being somewhat of a "blueballs" ending is so accurate to me to the messaging of what the social commentary of the show is going for. Josh pretty much spells it out in plain English for us in episode 6 or 7 - first it's getting the job, then the promotion, then the house, and it just never ends. The wheels of capitalism stop for no one, and the inequities in life shape who we are from the moment we're born from the decisions we make to how we interact with others to form and maintain relationships. There's no relief like a summer break coming like in school, or an end of the year. Life will beat you down, and then the sun rises again.
The ants being used for symbology throughout the show is very interesting too, and is perfect for the commentary.

> The first season was great because it took this minor every day conflict and let it spiral while giving the character involved great development.
I thought that's what made it interesting and set it apart, and I expected to get more of that with the second season since there are a lot of ways you could take a premise like that. Don't get me wrong, I do think the second season is great, but it's not really what I was anticipating.
I think if you're going to do an anthology show, there has to be some common thread between the seasons like how *White Lotus* is people's squabbles at a resort coming to a head or *Fargo* is average people being pulled into a crime and getting in way over their heads. At this point, I wouldn't really know what to expect from a third season of *Beef*, because "people getting into a fight" - which is basically the only thing the seasons have in common (aside from Koreans being involved) - isn't the most compelling or unique premise for an anthology since that already describes a lot of shows (including Ryan Murphy's *Feud*)

Yeah, just not entirely sure what the "beef" is in this show. In season 1 it was so over the top and seeing their conflict evolve was really cool.
But in this show, I'm just not entirely sure who the beef is with. In the first episode it seems like the beef is between the two couples, but later on the conflict is more between the partners of the couple. And then suddenly there is a whole different party that gets involved.
I enjoyed it but I was excited to see something different.

I’m not done with the show yet, and I’m before the halfway point but the blackmail aspects are really just the setup for the relationships of these characters to be attached. It’s moreso about 3 different classes of relationships siphoning off each other. In a way that’s both back and forth.
I think the show is pretty cognizant of the comparisons that could be drawn between it and White Lotus (as well as Parasite) and it’s doing enough to differentiate itself at this point for me.
I’d say give the first 3 episodes a try. The first episode left me a bit unsatisfied, but after the second it really settled into itself.

same. the first episode felt like it kinda fumbled the catalyst event - less visceral? less relatable maybe? it just didn't hook me.

Season 1 had writing and characters that were very real and not just caricatures of the Asian American experience. It was relatable to different ethnicities as well and relatable, unlike Crazy Rich Asians (which I never really understood bc I was not crazy rich). Sure that had spectacle and showed that casting asians in hollywood had draw, but it seems like right now its mostly Koreans at the forefront of representation and culture and then maybe Japanese people. But in a few years I can see more south east asian representation popping up as more and more travel to those countries due to costs. I am already seeing it a lot more on social media with trends of food and travel tips, so only time will tell with representation in mainstream media

Marketing was pretty bad for this, but feel like despite the bigger names S1 had a stronger hook where it's that revenge fantasy we've all entertained at some point to go scorched earth over something petty. This just looked like your typical HBOesque, limited series drama

I'd also say there seems like minimal marketing for this? At least I haven't noticed any interviews from the cast really.
I'm a bit surprised they didn't send Cailee Spaeny on some podcasts or something. I also thought the asian representation felt like a core part of season 1, not sure why they didn't keep that going.

Having finished Season 2, my guess would be that it's basically an entirely different show from Season 1. The "beef" premise of Season 1 was refreshing and felt original, whereas Season 2 just feels like any number of crime/dramedy/thriller shows we've seen before. I still enjoyed it, but I think Season 1 was far better and they frankly should've just called this something else but there wasn't really any "beef."

Yeah I don't really even usually focus on new shows. I prefer to wait till shows have at least a full season out so I can watch it all in a week. I know Netflix usually puts their shows out all at once but I have many other shows to watch as well. I also rotate through streaming platforms so right now I don't even have Netflix.

I think this is it. I also think people know that because it’s an anthology, S2 is there for them to pick it up when they have time. It’s not like they need to watch it ASAP to get the next chapter of a story they were previously invested in. They’ll wrap up what they’re watching and then pick up Beef when they get a moment.

I like that the show continued on the basic premise of "watch these people make a series of escalating bad decisions" from S1
however in this season EVERYONE was extremely unlikable, especially Lindsay. that woman had 0 redeeming values.
season 1 was much stronger

S1 just sucked you in the absurdity of it all within the first episode. Steven and Ali made you forget they were just actors and it actually feels like watching these crazy people. This season is so slow and it’s giving who cares?

the trailers ive seen have been nonsensical. who is mad? whats it about? is there tension? theyre trying to sell it with a cast like a new season of white lotus but not pulling it off

Season 2 is actually pretty good but it's not an Asian American show anymore.
I love Season 1 because it showed Asian American actors in roles not usually seen in Hollywood.
This season, while Oscar Isaac and Carey Mulligan were amazing, it didn't feel special anymore.

I don't think people are in the mood for this type of show at the moment. People are searching for shit that brings them peace. Even though the overall message of this show is peace and acceptance, the viewer has to endure a lot of negativity to get there. And there's already too much negativity in our world. People want an escape from our world.

Season 1 perfectly reflected the title "Beef" as you watched two people turn something that either could've just let go into a mutually self destructive spiral that also negatively affected those around them.
Season 2 didn't even really have a "Beef" to speak of, and was basically just a blackmail scheme/crime drama. I enjoyed watching it, but if I didn't know the show was Season Two of Beef I'd have just assumed it was an entirely new and distinct show. It honestly felt more similar to White Lotus than it did the first season of Beef. But regardless of that, I still don't think it was as well-written, paced, or structured as Season 1 and was an inferior follow-up.

It's a cool show but the product placements are obnoxious as hell. So much so that it takes me out of it constantly. The Gatorade situation, characters constantly naming specific products or restaurants/stores, josh and Lindsay's house is absolutely peppered with very obvious brands where the shot holds just enough so that the scene can go on but the viewer subconsciously picks up on it.

Im halfway through and its... also about 60% as good imo. Like its not bad but it isnt hitting as good as season 1 did. Also, season 1 was hilarious... there seems to be very little humor in season 2... which feels... weird. it feels like a totally different show... which might be the point, it being an anthology show and all.
Not bad, not great. Goodish.

I don’t think it’s fair to say it had poor marketing bc it’s been everywhere online (being from Europe, so I can’t imagine that their marketing was worse for the U.S.).
Aside from the points already mentioned,
I think the Asian actors and characters were fundamental.
- This story could have been portrayed by big name, hollywood establishment **white actors** but it wasn’t. It platformed two Asian actors - Ali Wong and Steven Yeun - in lead roles in a way that hadn’t been done for a drama.
- It deconstructed the ‘model minority’ trope by depicting Asian characters’ rage, assertiveness, sensuality, batshitiness... that was novel.
It’s hard to imagine what could be novel in a story featuring white Hollywood establishment actors in Carey Mulligan and that Isaac guy portraying a couple in a white lotus high society golf club. That’s not a story that people are in the face of it going to be invested in.
