I think this is the wrong approach. AI aside, data centers do allow for critical infrastructure to function. And you can't just ban data centers built for ai purposes, because AI is such a broad term and is used from providing routes for gps navigation to weather forecasts. That stuff is really beneficial to have. Requirements for companies to create energy for a data center and ensure cooling isn't an ecological issue, and adding regulations to companies wanting to produce these AI products seems like a better solution than just banning new data centers, because that becomes a slippery slope

Sorry, did you say the running of these things isn’t an ecological issue? It absolutely is. They are using gas power plants to secure their own power. They want to use nuclear. They are also sucking up huge amounts of purified water to cool the racks. They are an environmental blight. And yes, I acknowledge some data servers have use, those are not the data centres being built right now. These data centres are AI focused and exist to serve the development of AI which in turn kills jobs and harms people economically and ecologically. They need to be stopped.

That's not what I mean at all. You say some data centers have use, so why ban all new ones if some are useful? I agree that "these" data centers are a blight. I just think adding more regulations and restrictions to address the issues would be a better approach than an outright blanket ban.

I think their point would be that the existing data center more than fulfill the current need and probably the next 10 years of need were it not for AI requirements.

Right, if it weren't for AI requirements. Even then though, if LLMs were never a thing, I doubt the US would be able to operate the way it did without building a couple more over the course of 10 years. If the only action taken is to just say "no new data centers" and nothing is done to regulate the AI companies themselves, there is going to be lots of competition for that data center space. Local restaurants, shops, grocery stores, etc., use cloud services to manage inventory, process payments, handle payroll, etc. If those services go up in price because of the competition, those businesses will hurt and it will increase prices for everyone. Something needs to be done, I just don't think this is enough or will have the desired effect

What’s the point if it has no hope of passing? The corrupt and evil Republicans control everything.

Brings attention to the issues. And you don't stop pushing important issues just because the likelihood of reform is dim.

I think we need more of this. This is at least evidence that they are representing their constituents in good faith.  I get that it won't go anywhere, but it can at least be a guide for the public on who has been operating in good faith.  Secondly, I think it's like the whole Epstein transparency act.  Once it was forced to a vote, they didn't really have a choice to vote for it.  If they can gather enough people to force Johnson to bring it to a vote, it might not have much resistance.

Hopefully after both answers, you'll shirk this unhelpful doomsday outlook and realize how close we actually are to major and serious political reform in the U.S.

To show people there’s actual solutions out there that make sense that these dicks are just unwilling to use.

Like letting China beat us in the AI race and we’ll just rely on them?

Thats a stupid bill. We're an information age society. Data centers are crucial infrastructure. Obviously we dont need this insane buildout of GPU farms, but its like trying to stop air pollution by banning gas stations. Even as a political virtue signal its silly.
