Best Movies on HBO Max?

Posted by PourU_25518

I just subscribed to HBO Max on my Roku. I’m trying to find some good movies to watch. Some of my favorite kind of movies are psychedelic thrillers, suspenseful movies, horror without too much gore, comedies, rock n roll movies, abduction/encounter/sci-fi, apocalyptic, documentaries, independent, etc. Any suggestions?

I just watched Heretic last night. I really enjoyed it. Hugh Grant tapped into something interesting for that role. Really suited him.

Saw that at the movie theater and people were laughing at some parts of it. I thought it would be great based on the trailer but then I was let down.
-4
MKkidd Apr 1, 2026 +4
With you on this hot take. I love the director, rooted for it, Whitest Kids you Know meant a lot to my college years. But it did feel disappointing. Edit: will say that laughing during horror isn't a problem. They're tightly linked. Dark comedy may be the most human of all the arts.

Stalker is something else, not everyone's cupa tea but there's no denying Tarkovski is one of the greatest.

awilliamsid Apr 1, 2026 +5
Such a slow burn. Equal parts weird, melancholy, and masterful. I can’t stop thinking about it. But yeah not sure I’d recommend to many folks

I think they have the Kurosawa movies, if so Ikiru.

The chair company will scratch a couple of itches. Like if David Lynch and Judd Apatow did a collab

The Wire. Watch through fully twice. No it's not a movie, but it's the best thing on HBO.
10
mortenlu Apr 1, 2026 +3
It is the best. Task was also up there.

Formal-Combination7 Apr 1, 2026 +19
dune (2021) is probably right up your alley for the sci-fi stuff - visually incredible and has that psychedelic vibe without being too out there. Also check out Mad Max: Fury Road if you want apocalyptic action that's basically non-stop adrenaline. For horror that's not gore-heavy, The Conjuring series is solid - more atmospheric scares than blood and guts.
19
tinticred Apr 1, 2026 +6
Dune and Dune 2 would also be high on my list of recommendations.

Linetrash406 Apr 1, 2026 +5
My go too on HBO is usually series, they have some bangers.
5
GloriousRoseBud Apr 1, 2026 +1
Which do you love?
1
Linetrash406 Apr 1, 2026 +1
The wire, Chernobyl, sopranos are the classics. Also righteous gemstones and Peacemaker I really enjoyed. It’s easy to hate on game of thrones, but it was the most popular show on the planet for a reason. the pacific, band of brothers and generation kill are great series. The last of us I thought was quality as well.

Trying not to repeat other suggestions, but not being a fanatic about it: Everything Everywhere All at Once High and Low Companion Memento Wings of Desire Happy Death Day Blood Simple House (1977) Le Samourai

Le Samourai is phenomenal. Such a cool ass movie. Saw it finally last year.

If you're not against animation, Angel's Egg is an incredible visual masterpiece with elements with a lot of the elements you're asking for

One_Secret4788 Apr 1, 2026 +4
The Substance, Opus, Men, Get Out, Eddington, Ex Machina, and Death of a Unicorn are all on hbo right now.
4
overlordofmu Apr 1, 2026 +5
They have some of the best series as well. (The Wire and Band of Brothers are personal favorites.) One stands out. The first season of [True Detective](https://www.imdb.com/title/tt2356777/) is not to be missed. Please just watch the first episode and if you don't like it you don't like it. If you do, though, the first season only gets better and better as it goes on. The reviews vary on later seasons but season one is widely respected. It is incredible. Also, don't watch it with your parents. It hits hard.

I just rewatched TD 2 weeks ago and season 1 is literally master piece in TV cop drama

MKkidd Apr 1, 2026 +7
It's f****** impossible to remember where anything is in this landscape lol. Horror, Sinners and The Substance. Bone temple? Is that HBO? Heretic? What's the one with Aaron Paul that came out recently where's that? It's exhausting. Not in your ask but some of the "original" HBO TV series hold up incredibly. Six Feet Under is in my top list for sure. Chair Company is a fuckin riot. Edit: No idea how I forgot Companion, but that's my vote. That one.
7
MKkidd Apr 1, 2026 +3
Oh, Evil Dead Rise is a riot if you can stomach the violence. But it's campyish for the most part.
3
ipunchewoks Apr 1, 2026 +2
Tubi is free and there's some solid no-gore Horror on there. Gonjiam Haunted Asylum  Hell House LLC Grave Encounters was cheesy but decent Babadook HBO horror: Hereditary  Bring Her Back Companion The Substance Heretic Happy Death Day Smile 1 & 2 The Substance is great, but some weird gore in there I went through a phase where I wanted to watch the entire Conjuring and spinoff franchise and it was spotty for sure. Conjuring 1 was great, the Annabelle movies were surprisingly good, the Nun movies were garbage.  Also LOTR extended editions are on HBO max which are mandatory viewing.
2
FX114 Apr 1, 2026 +3
Seven Samurai. A good amount of Kurosawa besides that, as well.
3
Piyush_Panwar Apr 1, 2026 +2
You’ve got great taste—The Lighthouse is a perfect HBO Max pick: eerie, psychological, and totally hypnotic without relying on gore.
2
DeckardsDark Apr 1, 2026 +2
watch The Leftovers. it's a show tho

Wooflex Apr 1, 2026 +1
8 1/2 is a surrealist Italian movie that's kind of a classic, it's slower-paced than most modern movies but it might fit the psychedelic vibe you're looking for. Swiss Army Man is another surrealist movie that I feel like is more fun than 8 1/2 Weapons and Get Out are good horror/thriller movies that don't have a lot of gore I haven't seen Mickey 17 but it looks like it might be a good fit Sing Sing doesn't really fit your genres but it's one of my favorite movies from the past couple years
1
randomusernamechoice Apr 1, 2026 +1
Broken into some categories based on the above. All told HBO has 7/10 of my favorite movies from last year (I think all of which I saw somewhere else first, for the record). A few repeats but I think that speaks for how good they are. Movies from the past year you've almost certainly heard plenty about: One Battle After Another, Sinners, Weapons. Good Horror/Thrillers/Suspense That I Don't Think got Too Gory: Hereditary, Heretic, Get Out, Companion, Eddington, Uncut Gems Apocalyptic and either Very Dry or Very Wet: Furiosa, Flow Sci-Fi: Everything Everywhere All At Once, Mickey 17, 2001: A Space Odyssey, Frequently Asked Questions About Time Travel, The Lobster, The Terminator Comedies: Honestly I can't think of a ton of great comedy movies on there, but HBO has some amazing comedy TV shows. Veep, Mr. Show, and Harley Quinn all quickly jump to mind. Great Movies that Didn't Fit a Particular Category Above: If I had Legs I'd Kick You, Sorry Baby, Three Billboards Outside Ebbing Missouri

Egads, I haven't watch a movie on HBO in ages. Tons of shows, but only a couple of movies. Oh, The Rip was alright for a bit, but it didn't quite land. Oh wait, that's netflix. Yea, no movies in some time. You know, a good source is rotten tomatoes. They have a section for movies on streaming services, and you have several ways to arrange results

We’re rewatching ER between episodes of The Pitt. I know neither is a movie, but still has us glued. I made my wife watch fackam hall, British comedy with strong Monty Python vibes. If you liked holy grail, you’ll love FH.

Psychedelic thriller movies are a subgenre of psychological thrillers that blend intense suspense with surreal, mind-altering, or hallucinatory visuals and narratives.

Like The Game 1997? With Michael Douglas and David Fincher? I thought that movie was very thrilling with this smooooth drug type feel.

Zack Snyder's Justice League. But you may want to watch Batman v Superman first. And you may want to watch Man of Steel even before that.
