Biggest unexpected cameo from a star in a "lower grade" movie

Posted by Careless-Cat3327

Prime example - Matt Damon having a real role and singing in "Eurotrip". Genuinely didn't expect him to pop up given it wasn't an A grade movie and he was one of the biggest action stars in Hollywood at that point - The Departed, Bourne identity etc. Famous actors doing a cameo on big tv shows don't count - eg Brad Pitt, Ben Stiller, Danny Devito on Friends. Friends was the biggest tv show on network television at that point. Go. Edit \- Adding - 1. NPH in Harold and Kumar go to White castle (how did they even pitch that to him) 2. Bob Barker - Happy Gilmore. Eminem in the sequel is also extremely random. 3. Keanu Reeves - Always Be My Maybe 4. Martin Sheen - Hot Shots! Part Deux (one of my personal favorite comedy movies & one of Charlie's best movies). Martin was a bigger star than Charlie for blockbuster movies but Charlie definitely held the headlines for longer. 5. Mike Tyson - The Hangover (genuinely didn't expect to see him pop up but he definitely added so much to the movie)

Worth noting too that Damon doesn’t sing, he’s lip syncing once the song starts. Lustra performs the song.

Classic AMA. I never miss a chance to say we miss you u/chooter . Still the GOAT, but more than that, she was my personal high water mark for when listnook was at its best. Wherever you are Victoria, whatever make you happy, and however you define success, I wish you all of it.

Ah, yes, Gordon Street. I once knew a girl who lived on Gordon Street. Long time ago, when I was a young man. Not a day passes I don't think her and the promise that I made which I will always keep. That one perfect day on Gordon Street.

This scene is how I met my wife haha my friend and I were in a pub trying to remember street name in this monologue, we asked her if she knew... she did, and the rest is history. Even named our first born Aurora due to the film being the reason we met 😄

63
heroyooky Mar 30, 2026 +21
I'm so glad Robert Patrick agreed to do that. It's one of the funniest gags in the movie and makes me laugh every time.
21
le_cygne_608 Mar 30, 2026 +232
There are "lower grade" movies out there, but I'll take the angle of "completely invisible amazing actors in 'beneath them' movie" with Tilda Swinton completely unrecognizable in mainstream comedy Trainwreck, and Cate Blanchett covered head-to-toe, including mask, in hazmat gear for about 20 seconds in Hot Fuzz.
232
PrestonWaters83 Mar 30, 2026 +113
In this vein: Glenn Close in *Hook.*
113
not_original_thought Mar 31, 2026 +36
Hook needs it's own category because you have Glenn Close, Phil Collins, David Crosby and probably a couple others on forgetting doing cameos in that
36
SevroAuShitTalker Mar 30, 2026 +1368
Not really lower grade, but Sean Connery showing up at the end of Robin Hood Prince of Thieves was unexpected
1368
WippitGuud Mar 30, 2026 +1191
I'll see your Connery, and raise you Patrick Stewart at the end of Robin Hood Men in Tights
1191
captain_sticky_balls Mar 30, 2026 +673
The superior movie! Mostly because Elwes, unlike some other Robin Hoods, can speak with an English accent.

And Sir Patrick CAN talk with an English accent!

Compared to his other movies, Tom Cruise having that outlandish/completely off-brand role in Tropic Thunder comes to mind. Also Matt Damon in Deadpool 2 talking about wiping his ass with wet wipes with Alan Tudyk.
2702
Upbeat_Tension_8077 Mar 30, 2026 +254
I also loved Matt's cameos in the last two Thor movies with him reenacting Loki in stage plays
254

He also had a cameo as “Austin Powers” in Goldmember.
467

anuncommontruth Mar 30, 2026 +69
I haven't seen Goldmember since it came out in theaters, but when I saw that movie I don't think I've ever experienced an audience laugh that hard in my life when Devito came on in that cameo. Probably the best audience I've ever been a part of for any movie in my entire life. Respectful, laughing, cheering, no one talked or walked around. Cell phones were barely a thing. And we paid like 10 bucks for a family of 4 to see it. One of my best movie memories.
69
PaulBlartWallClock Mar 30, 2026 +70

I loved him showing up in Jay and Silent Bob’s Reboot as Loki too.
38
Even_Spite8247 Mar 30, 2026 +42
I have genuinely never heard a theater crowd go crazier than when it’s his close up and he goes “Yeah, baby!” It was nuts. Like a sports crowd watching their team score the winning points. It was comparable to Endgame and No Way Home.
42
MysteriousTelephone Mar 30, 2026 +303
It’s amazing that Tom Cruise never took on any more comedic roles after this.
303
Careless-Cat3327 Mar 30, 2026 +105
He would only be interested if there was a scene of him jumping out a plane. No stunt doubles necessary.
105
WesTxStoner425 Mar 30, 2026 +51
Plus he HAS to run as fast as he can. It would be funny if it was just to catch a bus.

This was the couch-jumping era, a couple years after Paramount severed ties with him.
24
Justinwc Mar 30, 2026 +43
He's in Digger later this year, which is supposed to be a black comedy. There's only a short title trailer so far.
43
Marvelman1788 Mar 30, 2026 +244
Also Brad Pitt in Deadpool 2  as the Vanisher.
244
brainkandy87 Mar 30, 2026 +57
Brad Pitt in The Lost City was also a surprise.
57
atwistedsmile Mar 30, 2026 +71
>!Sandra Bullock!< voices Brad Pitt's handler in Bullet Train, and pops up at the end of the movie too. Apparently they have the same hair stylist (Janine Thompson). Brad asked Janine to call >!Sandra!< to do a favour and be in Bullet Train, and then they asked for Brad to be in The Lost City in return. >!Channing Tatum!< also pops up as a passenger in Bullet Train, which was another fun surprise that came out of it.
71
TheLateThagSimmons Mar 30, 2026 +50
*Bullet Train* and *Deadpool 2* were a straight across friendly cameo trade between Ryan Reynolds and Brad Pitt.
50
BallerGuitarer Mar 30, 2026 +127
Tom Cruise in Tropic Thunder was a delight, but it wasn't a cameo. He played an integral role to the plot. Just because he played against type doesn't mean he was a cameo.
127
GenericRedditor0405 Mar 30, 2026 +30
I would also not by any means call Tropic Thunder a lower grade movie. It’s a blockbuster comedy with an ensemble cast lol
30
samushitman69 Mar 30, 2026 +33
Are those really "lower tier movies" what OP was asking for tho? One got oscar noms, A-list ensemble, Ben Stiller writing and directing, and other one was a sequel to already beloved comic book character, who's movies are blockbusters. I dont know
33
Divine_Miss_MVB Mar 30, 2026 +1495
David Bowie in Zoolander. I remember the theater just erupted when he appeared.

George Clooney in the South Park movie
303
yojimbo124 Mar 30, 2026 +155
Also as Stan's dog Sparky in season 1.
155
Self_Reddicate Mar 30, 2026 +107
Yes, this is the best one in the entire thread. The movie is close, but by then South Park was a big deal. His first season cameo is wilder because of how random it is for GEORGE CLOONEY to be voicing a dog on a weird, toilet humor show by a couple of nobodies.
107
Deuce_part_deux Mar 30, 2026 +45
Apparently George Clooney played a pretty big role in spreading the South Park "pilot" around Hollywood. It makes me wonder what happened between early South Park (where he voiced Sparky and the ER doc in the movie) and later South Park where they kind of ripped him a new one (the "SMUG" episode and Team America). I know Team America isn't technically South Park, but like, it sort of is.
45
pseudoart Mar 30, 2026 +34
They’re probably just pulling his leg. George Clooney is infamous for long and crazy pranks and seems genuinely like a fun guy. A little too much, maybe. Check out the kitty litter story.
34
jnwatson Mar 30, 2026 +44
George Clooney essentially greenlit South Park the TV show after seeing Jesus vs. Santa.

Matt and Ben were in practically all of Kevin Smiths early films (Clerks being the exception). They were all close friends back then.

18
valeyard89 Mar 31, 2026 +12
No, but it's Miramax. So I'm sure it'll be Ben Affleck and Matt Damon. They put those guys in a bunch of movies. You know, those kids from Good Will Hunting? You mean that fuckin' movie with Mork from Ork in it?

Patrick Stewart - Robin Hood Men In Tights Like he was a respected Thespian actor and Star Trek icon at that time, way above a Mel Brooks comedy, but turned up just to mirror the Sean Connery cameo in Prince Of Thieves.
437
slyseekr Mar 30, 2026 +174
Let's thank the cast of TNG for goofing off so much on the set that it eventually forced Sir Patrick to have a sense of humor about his work.
174
willstr1 Mar 30, 2026 +112
IIRC Frakes was the one who convinced Sir Patrick Stewart to watch Galaxy Quest
112
Slippy_27 Mar 30, 2026 +71
I dunno I wouldn’t count a Mel Brooks comedy as lesser-than. He is the rarified air of Hollywood comedies back then. Yes he made goofball comedies, but he’s very well respected by the industry and comedians especially have him on a pedestal for good reason.
71
wonderwife Mar 30, 2026 +32
I stand by my statement that Mel Brooks is a genius who has always pushed the edge of what is appropriate/acceptable to the point that watching a Mel Brooks movie 5 months after it is released is an exercise in pearl clutching combined with an aria of, "omg, we can't say/do that anymore!"

"Any regrets?" "I don't know. Garfield, maybe." Absolute f****** gold.
602
neo_sporin Mar 30, 2026 +183
The fact his role in Garfield really just came down to mistaking Joel Cohen for Joel Coen is one of my favorite Hollywood stories…
183
Kids_see_ghosts Mar 30, 2026 +72
I’ve always assumed he either said that as a joke or made it up so he can have best of both worlds of doing a lowbrow film for a dump truck full of cash while pretending he didn’t mean to be a “sell out.” And only did it accidentally.
72
Long_Pig_Tailor Mar 30, 2026 +17
I definitely prefer to think it's true and just thought it was something like The Studio's Scorsese *Kool-Aid* thing and figured Coen had some crazy take on Garfield or the name just happened to be the same. It's way more entertaining to me to imagine a way he really did just get it mixed up.
17
Upbeat_Tension_8077 Mar 30, 2026 +27
His flashback cameo in the second one is probably my favorite part of that sequel besides Zoey Deutch's performance
27
sheetskees Mar 30, 2026 +48
Tenacious D Pick of Destiny had Ben Stiller as the ~~record store owner~~ guitar center employee, but the standout cameo in the movie was Tim Robbins.
48
Fabricati_Diem_Pvn Mar 30, 2026 +324
Community was never big. So I definitely count Owen Wilson in his 5 second cameo towards the end of "Investigative Journalism". Which also has Jack Black in it, but Wilson was the much bigger star at that point.
324
bardsworth Mar 30, 2026 +84
And those cameos were only possible because of their involvement with Harmon's failed pilot for "Heat Vision and Jack".

A TV show, but when Brad Pitt showed up on Jackass for a the fake kidnapping prank and then dresses up like a monkey wrecking havoc I was like “wtf, how did they get him!?” [Link](https://youtu.be/VFVvmu0j6WY?si=V5oN7LdMcxn6HlLU)

The best part about this clip is you can tell HE HAD fun doing it.  I remember watching it as a kid and telling my dad and sisters. They laughed and told me "they probably used a stunt double & did a bait and switch".

NPH’s cameo in Harold and Kumar was before he was Barney in HIMYM. I believe he was doing mostly theater at the time. His role in H&K helped him get the role as Barney since it was a so different than Doogie Howser.

Darmok47 Mar 30, 2026 +29
He had that small role in Starship Troopers, but yeah he was very much kind of a washed up TV actor when he did Harold & Kumar. His biggest successes came after.

It's funny in the movie, F1, the real F1 drivers can't believe they're in a movie with Brad Pitt, and Brad Pitt can hardly believe he gets to hang around real F1 drivers.

I like Piastri's mom talking about this: "We watched the F1 movie... In one scene he's standing next to Brad Pitt in the driver line up when they're singing the national anthem. And so when I spoke to him the next time I said, 'I know you've met Brad Pitt', he said 'I'm pretty sure I haven't'. I go, 'Mate, I saw you. I saw him standing next to you'. He goes, 'Ah, yeah.. I didn't talk to him though'. I said, 'Why not?' He goes 'What are you going to say to that old guy?"

Happy Gilmore 2 had the same energy of an entire generation of Golfers who loved the first and would do anything to be in a cameo. John Daley stands out.

My favorite line in the F1 movie though is when he cuts off Max "That was very naughty." Just such a Max line I love it haha.

Alice Cooper playing himself and educating us all on the history of "Mil-ay-walk-ay." Alice Cooper playing himself as Freddy Krueger's abusive, alcoholic stepfather. Alice Cooper playing himself as a schizophrenic un-housed person possessed by Satan and stabbing physicists with bicycles.

What kids nowadays don't quite understand is that before Robin Williams's Aladdin, it was rare to have big named stars do voice over work in cartoons (it happened but it was rare). Tom Hanks and Tim Allen (he was big at the time) did Toy Story not long after. And now, if you don't have a big name in a feature animated movie you'd better have certified bopper (**cough K-Pop Demon Hunters*). Orson Welles being in Transformers would be like Taylor Swift doing a commercial for frozen peas now.

Williams also did it for cut price because he wanted his "voice to live on & to make children happy". The director didn't think they could land Williams. He chose to do it because he's an awesome guy. Rip 🙏

Adding - 1. NPH in Harold and Kumar go to White castle (how did they even pitch that to him) 2. Bob Barker - Happy Gilmore. Eminem in HG2 is also extremely random. 3. Keanu Reeves - Always Be My Maybe 4. Martin Sheen - Hot Shots! Part Deux (one of my personal favorite comedy movies & one of Charlie's best movies). 5. Mike Tyson - The Hangover (genuinely didn't expect it)

I hate to appear pedantic, but I have to set this straight. NPH didn't do Harold and Kumar a favor here, his career was just short of over when that movie came out. The part went against type and was so good it revitalized his career, otherwise many people probably wouldn't even know who he was.

SilentSwine Mar 30, 2026 +82
Neil Patrick Harris wasnt super well known when Harold and Kumar was made. He was in the awkward transition from child actor (known for playing Doogie Howser) to adult actor with little to no well known roles. It was actually his cameo in Harold in Kumar that revitalized his career and helped him get the part in How I Met Your Mother that turned him into the A-lister he is today

mabrasm Mar 30, 2026 +28
He’s said before that he’ll do anything with the directors of those flicks because they revitalized his career.

psimwork Mar 30, 2026 +22
Came to say basically this. He was kind of a punchline at the time. I would say arguably his biggest film role between his TV time and Harold & Kumar was "Starship Troopers" and the audience reaction to seeing him was "LOL DOOGIE!!!". And the funny thing is that the *initial* reaction in Harold & Kumar was likewise, "LOL DOOGIE!!!". But then minutes into it, suddenly it was "holy shit. Doogie Howser is f****** hilarious." And then yeah - once he got known for playing a womanizing a****** in this, it was totally not surprising to see him play another womanizing a******. Only after all that did we actually get to see that Neil Patrick Harris could actually act.

Hot Shots! Part Deux is an amazing movie that everyone needs to watch at least once. The sheer amount of jokes-per-second(JPS totally a metric, don’t look it up) in that movie is insane. Has to be one of the highest of all time? Like almost every scene has some level of physical comedy, slap-stick, and parody while still taking itself serious (which is just another layer of a joke).

The overlapping narration, plus “I loved you in Wall Street!” was such a great 1-2 punch of a gag

If it matters, from NPH himself: He knew nothing about the movie, Harold and Kumar, one day one of his friends that had been doing auditions came to him and told him that he had just auditioned for the movie NPH was going to be in. NPH was like “no I’m not in that movie“ and then he called his manager and had him find out about it eventually got the script and liked it.
