I have recently found myself awestruck by the "Birdwatching" sub-genre of film and how it handles the theme of extreme obsession. Most people know the major studio comedy **The Big Year (2011)** starring Steve Martin and Jack Black, which captures the competitive nature of "listing" with a big Hollywood budget. I also recently revisited the indie-drama **A Birder's Guide to Everything (2013)**, which uses the hobby as a coming-of-age backdrop.
However, I just finished the 2025 documentary "**LISTERS: A Glimpse Into Extreme Birdwatching**" and it's a completely different experience. It feels much more like a gonzo"road movie than a traditional nature doc. It shows the dirtbag reality of traveling in a beat-up van and the sheer madness of the community in a way that feels more authentic than the polished versions we see in commercial films.
I'm curious if anyone else has explored this niche genre. Are there other films that capture this specific type of "quest" narrative? It's interesting how a hobby that seems so quiet on the surface can drive such intense, often hilarious, cinematic storytelling. Even if you don't know anything about birds, the human drive to complete a list is a great engine for a movie.
Not a movie, but the Netflix murder mystery series , The Residence, features the main character, a brilliant detective, who is also a birder. A vert dedicated one.
