Such a welcome reprieve from all the depressing headlines. Good on the tribes for fighting this. I’m so glad they won.

Good on native youth for setting up a protest/prayer camp, which was used as launching pad for civil disobedience NVDA to shut down drilling equipment,
Which also happened at Standing Rock in 2016
That is real direct action, directly shutting down the horrible thing. Not protest and arrests very far away solely in hopes news coverage will create enough pressure

> Nine tribes in South Dakota, North Dakota and Nebraska filed a lawsuit against the Forest Service over the project alleging violations of the National Historical Preservation Act and National Environmental Protection Act for granting permits without an environmental review.
The Forest Service is currently being led by a timber lobbyist (Tom Schultz), btw, if you're wondering why this shit keeps happening.
At least the right people won this time around.
But it should've never been an issue in the first place. Because our government agencies shouldn't be run by blatantly corrupt scumbags.
Yet another example of the consequences for literally millions of Americans not being willing to vote against MAGA (MAGA wants this corruption, that's the only reason I'm not calling them out, they get off on it).

Man, MAGA really does seem to have a genuine talent for picking the *worst possible people* to put in charge of government departments.

It's kind of nice to see that even with the permissive "(s)r*** the land" approach the Trump administration is allowing, [not everyone sees it as a worthwhile investment.](https://www.nytimes.com/2026/03/04/climate/cook-inlet-alaska-lease-sale-bids.html) It's almost as if Donald Trump is wrong about everything.

Good for them! We need more of that. The predator class might need some more reigning in on many fronts .

Absolutely the most gorgeous area in that part of the country, an absolute gem that when you're in can almost feel a positive and ancient power residing there, in the hills and trees and prairies.
Just another quarterly bonus to these mining companies and they *will* be back, eager to extract the life of the land, this time with a new plan so this little hiccup doesn't happen. Be ready.

According to the article the company withdrew its plan of operations and doesn’t intend to file another plan. Sounds pretty canceled to me.

Glad to see a delay but yeah, simple enough for them to just do a NEPA assessment. Unfortunately NEPA is procedural; decision makers can still make whatever decision they want.

The Black Hills should never have been treated like disposable land to begin with.
Glad the tribes pushed back hard enough to stop it.
